As much as I love the diminutive 'cheev' (especially when smarmily shouted - falsetto and extended - right into the face of a bested opponent: "Cheeeeeeeev!") I have started to prefer 'ding'.

There's no reason why this needs to be implemented on the site itself. With the easy availability of data in the Infodump, somebody could make something that downloads it every week, runs some queries on it, and puts up a web page showing achievements. Call it CheFi or something.
(I submit this merely as proof not everything that can be done should be done.)

It would be a challenge to NOT do some of these.
As an aside, it turns out the wine logging site I use has added game elements. I picked up a whole bunch without knowing. And now I'm going to try out a bunch of varietals I never even knew existed, just to finish out some stupid badges.
I guess it works.

I'm kind of torn between whether cortex had that image pre-baked and did like a "Perfect C-C-Combo!" as he hit the post comment, or whether that was organic and au naturel. I like to think he's one smart cookie but I think he's also a good baker.

Organic, though I had the assistance of a web-based cheevo manufacturer to do all the heavy lifting. I just plugged and chugged and did some rather sloppy fill-and-cleanup around the edges to make it fit the background color of Metatalk.

I have started doing Khan Academy exercises for something that for the lack of a better description I shall call fun. They have achievements, and while it is really silly, something about getting a little hurrah at the end of a test is pleasing.
Of course, now I live in dread of getting a sad face smilie when I make a stupid error. Sorry I suck at math, Mr Sad Face!

So if your consciousness travels back in time to be dumped into your own young self to try and right some wrongs you inflicted, some to others but mainly to yourself--the idea being, of course, that you get to keep your accumulated wisdom from now--do you get to keep your day-to-day memories of the time or is it a clean wipe of your brain?
I mean, if you dumped me into 4th-period physics in October of the 10th grade, straight from today, I would have no idea what I was doing (which, looking at my grades from the time, is just trading one sort of ignorance for another), but more importantly I'd have no idea what class was next, what bus I was supposed to catch home, who more than 80% of the people in school were, what job I was working and when I was supposed to be there...it would be a mess. (Best I can think of to cover is tripping and pretending to hit your head.) On the other hand, if your brain isn't wiped clean, exactly how does that work? I mean, do you have to battle with 15-year-old you for control? That fucker was ignorant but tenacious.
If you intend to go back in time to fix something emotionally-based, can your superior knowledge and logic win over whatever chemical soup is generating the emotions?
If you're lazy and shiftless now, and were lazy and shiftless then, will going back in time magically make you not lazy and not shiftless?

I dunno; you ever been back someplace you went as a kid but haven't been to for a couple decades since? You'd be surprised, the amount of info that floats to the top of your head. Or had a vivid dream about something from when you were a kid? Those memories aren't really gone, they're just really hard to unlock at will. But I think if you were somehow transported back to that same time and place, with the sounds and the smells and even the touch of things the same, things might come a lot easier than you'd think. You'd open your bookbag to grab a notebook in math class and see your social studies textbook in there and remember you had that class immediately after lunch.
