Is there a script I can use to hide a particular thread? It's freaking me out and telling myself not to click isn't working.
Depending on what browser you're using, you can get a program like Chrome Nanny and block the URL?

Well, not sure if this will help sufficiently, but if you use Greasemonkey, I've just made a little script to hide that particular thread from Ask Metafilter's list of threads.
The main problem is that it takes about a brief moment to work - maybe a quarter second or so, at least on my machine - during which the thread will be visible on the list (if that part of the list happens to be in your browser window, as opposed to above or below the window).

That metafilter thread prompted me to put a few books on my to-read shelf and to see if a few books were available at my local library. I wonder if the mods would be OK with a new, different metatalk thread wherein we COULD talk about the thread? Or no?

I don't get it... there is nothing particularly gory in that thread, just short descriptions of content. To really get grossed out you would need to follow links, do image searches, read excerpts on Amazon, etc. So how can that freak you in and of itself?
And come to think of it, the guy asking the question is kind of working at cross purposes to his own mental health as well. "Tell me about what I shouldn't read?" WTF? Then why do you find yourself reading Helter Skelter, which you know is all about a serial killer and his cult of killers, when that is something you don't like to know about?
And now we get this additional layer, tell me how to hide from the guy who wants to hide from a list of gruesome topics that somehow I can't not read about, do I understand correctly?
Maybe it would be more useful long term to work on willpower, or something?
But hey, whatever, no biggie. Just strange.

I'd say no, unless there is a reason you think the thread fits into any of the MetaFilter categories? This odd business about single MeFi or AskMe or MeTa posts spawning multiple MeTa posts is sort of ungreat. I'd suggest MetaChat which is more set up for this sort of thing. Here is a story about willpower.

Because... I didn't actually know that! I didn't really know anything about the subject (I mean, that's generally why I read non-fiction books). And because even if I had known, I've often found books that contain troubling subject matter to be helpful to my understanding of the true nature world, and humanity, and society, and notions of justice, &c. &c. Without already knowing what was in the book, there was no way for me to know that what was in the book. Right?
Re: the question itself: I did not intend to freak anybody else out, and for that (Wordwoman, bquarters, anybody else who got the fantods) I'm sorry. For reals.
