MeFiSwap 2012-2, The Swappening, is almost over! I'm on my way to the post office this afternoon to mail out my mixes, and I can't wait to dig in to all the mixes from the (put-together, ahead-of-the-game, super-awesome) swappers who have already mailed out. If you're signed up to swap, the mailing deadline is tomorrow, Saturday, July 21!

I'm cutting it closer than I'd like, but mine are going out in the mail tomorrow. Here's the track listing and "liner notes" for my mix, Everybody's Got Something to Flag Except Me and My Sock Puppet. I had a problem with my graphics system, but I think it's resolved. Hopefully I can knock out a cover before the mailing deadline - otherwise this would be the first mix I've made in 25 years without a cover. I can't let that happen. Sometimes the cover is my favorite part of the mix.

The Dear Prudences has been a wonderful group so far. I've received most mixes. Haven't heard them all yet, in part because rongorongo's was the first to arrive, and I've had a hard time taking it out of my car stereo. A great mix.

As for mine, I do imaginary soundtracks to novels. This time around, I did Ben Marcus's "The Flame Alphabet." This format tends to lead to a combination of genres, and a mix of the familiar and the less-familiar, and this iteration was no exception. For those who want to see what I think this novel sounds like in MeFi mix form, you can see at the MeFi Swap Flickr Cover Pool. I think this one turned out alright. You don't need to have read the book to enjoy the mix. But hopefully, if you like the mix, you'd like the book, and vice-versa.

Innovations for this round included: 1) sending a bonus disc with mp3 files and artwork for those who tend to like that sort of thing, and 2) figuring out how to burn the metadata on the audio CD, so that if you have one of those newfangled car radios, it'll give you the text of what you're listening while you're listening to it.

I guess this is where I publicly admit I am a stupid, bad person and I feel bad. I waited til today and I find out that my CD drive (I don't even remember what to call them) won't recognize anything, let alone write anything, and I'm about out of time even if I knew someone with a CD writer. This is the first time I've tried doing a theme that wasn't instrument based, or songs I like right now based. I was thinking about running to music, and what it would take to make a good playlist for that. I normally run to podcasts instead of music, so I'm not sure if it's really worked out as a running sound track, but I'm still found of the music on the disk. Mine went out this morning, because as I mentioned in my explanatory email I didn't realize until it was too late that the post office closes at high noon on Saturday and at the time I was watching an expensive-looking but thoroughly enjoyable superhero movie about a bat or the Occupy movement or something.

I also clumsily gave out my real last name in that email, something that I've been pretty careful about not revealing to but a very few Mefites in the 10* years I've been a member here. I am now on my way out the door now to buy a couple of extra deadbolts for my doors, a few dozen boxes of fresh crossbow bolts, and a vat of acid to melt off my fingerprints.

Mine didn't read (and badly scratched) anything i put in it. I couldn't remember the last time i used the dvd drive on my laptop.

Okay - can I share my list now?....

I was kind of obsessed with a song recorded by the band Traffic this spring -- "John Barleycorn Must Die." It's a traditional English folk song, and I got to wondering - hey, how many OTHER non-folk bands have done covers of folk songs? And that's what started this playlist.

Some really surprised me (Sinead O'Connor didn't write 'I Am Stretched On Your Grave'? Who knew?) Also - this turned into a tribute to Leadbelly in some weird way, because at least 30% of the songs I found were covers of what people thought were Leadbelly compositions, but were covers of leadbelly covering a folk song.

After sending an email out saying mine would be a bit late (and thinking I was the only one) four others came out of the woodwork to say much the same. Kudos to the one person in the swapset who got their mix to us early on; without that prompting I'd have been even later getting mine out the door.

I feel kinda bad for my fellow Do It in the Roaders because when I made my mix, I was Sad Girl and grotesquely overworked. It's yawningly chill with a thru-note of jangling and twinkling guitars/synths and about a thousand CCs of melancholy. Even the title, The Golden Age, is from Beck's very sad song of the same name in the mix.

I'm enjoying the other mixes a lot. This has truly become one of my favorite things.

Let's see, there's some other stuff to apologize for: Boyz II Men? I've had this song rattling around my head since middle school; my girlfriend is about to wring my neck from the random outbursts of Motown Philly I subject her to daily. · The cover of Hot Love I put on the mix is a fairly straight-ahead cover by Elf Power of the T-Rex classic, which is why I don't feel bad just subbing in the T-Rex version above. The covers album by Elf Power Nothing's Going to Happen is a crazy collection of interesting tracks. They do Tall Dwarves (natch), a bunch of Roky Erickson songs, and several other fascinating little songs. · In case you didn't see, you can download full albums from Erin Tobey and Swearin' at If You Make It, which has a nice little repository of indie albums to choose from. There's a lot of dreck in there, as there is in all free collections, but I've found plenty of stuff to enjoy as well. · A bunch of other tracks were free on Amazon at one point, J.D. McPherson, Lost in the Trees, Grimes. · Kitty Pryde, Twin Shadow, and (I can't remember if this article about Weezer) The Rentals were featured on The Blue recently.

So far, I've only received two CDs from my group the Savoy Truffles, great mixes from straw man special and CuJoe. Still nothing from imabanana, flex, or DubHeavyBassMan. I hope I end up receiving more mixes, because as of now I'm feeling like kind of a sucker, the kind of sucker that's going to be pretty hesitant to take part in future swaps.

I'm most curious about Mr BassMan - notice there's no link to his userpage? It's because I can't find a user with that name (or any of the various variations on that name that I tried). Did I send a CD to some random dub-loving man in France?

Really, though, I would've thought that a requirement to take part in the Mefi swap would be that, you know, you need to be a member of the site.

I'm crossing my fingers for you, item. This was my third (or fourth??) swap and I have received 100% of CDs. Probably closer to 150% of CDs because some people have too much good taste in music to limit themselves to just one CD. And I thank them for that.

Batting 1000 for me, awesome swapmates!

I'm sure your folks are just giving that mix an extra listen (or five) or are flailing wildly at the only working CD burner in the house (after trying three other ones and failing in different ways with each) because iTunes decided to only burn 54 seconds of five different songs even though they were each at LEAST 3 minutes long and they made all five copies of the disc before discovering iTunes' error and then realized that they don't have enough CDs left to reburn the whole lot again!

Or, at least, that's what happened at my house.

Stupid iTunes.

Thanks. I'm still confused as to why someone would've signed up for this if they aren't even a member of the site. I mean, if you're gonna screw members of a community over, at least be a member of that community yourself! Jesus.

I'm finding it hard to believe someone with a moniker such as DubHeavyBassMan would really enjoy the mix I sent out or either of the mixes I received. I like many genres of music and my mix (hopefully) reflected that, but in my experience when someone is so into a certain type of music that they name themselves after it, they tend to have little interest in other stuff, much as if he'd been called NorwegianBlackMetal666 or HoobastankGrandma or SmoothJazz4Life or AllIListenToIsMollyHatchetYouGotAProblemWithThatBuddy? Then again, I could be totally wrong and my amazingly well thought out mix could've opened his mind to a world beyond French deep house PA sets.

There's still no word from that person as to what the deal is, so I'm hesitant to make any accusations at this point. I've reached out to them for some explanation. It's really a bummer that I'm going to have to start double-checking this kind of thing. I like it that this swap operates on a healthy dose of Good Will, because that stuff turns around and amplifies really well, but there are some limits I guess. Not to mention some real assholes out there with no compunction against abusing it.

Accounting for Assholes is the title of the book I'm writing about online group dynamics and management.

This is my third swap, and I haven't ever gotten all five of my swap CDs. I'm still missing one from mine.

I actually don't get too fussed about it, though, and by the time I realize that "hey, I never did get that fifth CD," I've long since lost the original email that says who was in my swap set and it's too late to gell Carson anything. I'm still 4 CDs ahead of the game.

But Carson, this probably creates a headache for you -- at what point DO you want people to start telling you "hey, I never got a CD from [name of person]"? just keep on waiting too long because I simply don't notice.

Anyway, wow! Great concept (songs with fade-ins), liner notes, and packaging. Professional all the way through. I am going to love this one.

All Revolutions received! An awesome sampling of music, over 75 songs and no duplicates. SarahElizaP's handwritten track listing and disc lettering was a warm entre to stringed delicacies within, while Carson B's "Millions of Sunsets" and Sonny Jim's "Things Are Great" featured thoughtful notes and artful packaging of intense collections I am still processing. Baltimoretim's "A Day In the Life" delighted me with Josie & The Pussycats and Black Dub, and Larus' untitled mix became my favorite with its opening cut "California Earthquake" by Mama Cass Elliot.

The grand structure of my mix was alternating new sounding old songs with old sounding new songs, as they appealed to a wistful mood at the time, hence the title. Of note is "History" by Lamont, ripped from my own vinyl, as well as Little Dragon going into Little Richard, a serendipitous segue I am just noticing now!

Hi. I'm the OLD-OLD behind the 'heartbreakingly personal' mix Ardship of Cambry mentions above. The call for the mefi CD swap came out while I was in the midst of helping to plan a friend's memorial service. As it turns out, meticulously putting together a mix CD is a fantastic distraction. My own music taste runs towards the sad and folksy anyway, so I had plenty to work with. But I also threw in a few songs that others posted to facebook or sent to me personally as news of his death spread. (Not Alone, Peace in the Valley), a few songs by artists who hail from or played shows in our neighborhood. (Strange, What's Wrong With Me, Almost Home.) And I tried to make it uplifting and redemptive in the end.

I'm doing a lot better now.
