Thanks! I'm barely functioning, but luckily my lovely wife is keeping it all together. It was a long and tough road through "assisted reproductive technology" (an odious Orwellian formulation) to get to this point, and many MeFites were really supportive when I talked about that before on the site, so thanks a lot for that.

Also, a really nice MeFite already got the baby an account!

I wondered something similar at our last MetaTalk baby shower and went back 9 months but couldn't find anything.

Congratulations to the proud parents. I remember your comment from last July, OmieWise, and it (and a lot of that thread) really changed the way I look at a lot of things regarding fertility. I'm very happy for you.

As for Metafilter's recent baby boom, there's no way to say what comes to mind without sounding creepy - but I'll try to come across as non-creepy as possible.

I can't help but not be happy about the babies but also for the babies because they are lucking out with the parents they're getting.

I don't think there's a baby boom at all. I just think it's an awareness cluster where people are realizing that the mods are apparently not closing these threads and folks have come to think they are acceptable posts for MeTa. While I wish all the new parents the best of luck and a happy life for their child, I personally don't think they are appropriate posts for MeTa. It's not a feature request, a bug, or a site issue that needs the community to weigh in on, and seems like something that would go great on your own personal blog.

There's a baby post that went badly? That sort of makes me angry. WTH? (And I don't even really like babies. I love kids, but I kinda prefer them to be a bit more like people, say about twenty-four months and up. Obviously, then, I've never been a parent because parents always seem to love babies and forever appreciate all babies. Or something.)

I think baby threads are great because they're so happy-making — we get to share in another mefite's truly wondrous, glorious news. That's really cool.

While I wish all the new parents the best of luck and a happy life for their child, I personally don't think they are appropriate posts for MeTa. It's not a feature request, a bug, or a site issue that needs the community to weigh in on, and seems like something that would go great on your own personal blog.

Here's the thing, laconic skeuomorph: a lot of people have met on MetaFilter, have friends on MetaFilter, and like to share happy news with the community. It's kind of site news. I met my husband on MetaChat (indirectly through MetaFilter) and I'm 7.5 months pregnant, so you bet you'll see a new baby post from us in about 6 weeks.

It's not like we're going to run out of space in MetaTalk, so just keep movin; if you see something you aren't interested in.

I am chicken sitting for a professor right now, and I can tell when the brown chicken lays eggs because they are brown eggs. However, there are three white chickens and all their eggs look the same. I'm sure this is a metaphor for race in the US, or something, but there you have it.
