From time to time, people who are the topic of a thread register and participate in the conversation. I was looking for some kind of list in the Wiki and didn't find anything. So I searched through tags and found these: newmember, mefisown, metafiltersown. Anywhere else?

I've created a redirect that should be helpful. Since people are basically doing the MeFi Wiki as a labor of love we try pretty hard to just appreciate anything that's there.

And the great thing about a wiki is that anyone can edit it!

Blame me for the name. I couldn't think of anything else at the time. Although Mefi's Own would have been an obvious choice.

"Mefi's Own" feels ... fake to me. "Hey That's Me!" is generally more accurate, in my eyes, even if it isn't so easy to find on the wiki. Most of those folks joined because they found out about the post after it was made, joined to add a comment or three, then never say another thing. I'm not faulting them, but they're not really MeFites in my eyes. They're good people and all, and I get that it's fun to call Amanda Palmer or Steve Wozniak members of our ever-growing group, but they popped in and left.

I'm trying to say: they're gone, man. Let them go.

My inclination is that the Famous page is a better match for "Mefi's Own" than the Hey That's Me! page.

I suppose that I may be as guilty as anyone of confirmation bias so, to enlighten you, here is why I asked: when authors, artists or businesses want to exchange directly with their public (readers, users, consumers), they can either drop in public places (here we are, or in facebook, Twitter...), or they can welcome them in their own website and host the conversation. I was looking for good examples of both.

In this case, RichardP, the Famous page is a different crowd.

I check my referrer logs quite obsessively. It's funny to see where traffic comes from and how.

27bslash6.com amounts for about a quarter of my direct traffic with the rest of the top 10 referrers being various law or mommy blogs. I love looking at what search terms were used to find my site. I sometimes go out and repeat a search and see how many pages you have to go through before that result actually shows up.

I try to track down my referrers and then I go to that site and comment when possible. Usually I talk smack about myself. Sometimes I can't get in, since the link is on a paid member's only page.

One of the things that amuses me the most is that I have inbound links from online syllabi. Yes, I was insufferable for about a week when I realized I was being taught at Brown. I now get a lot of links from marketing, branding, communications and business classes, but very little traffic.

Sometimes I am amazed at what traffic a referring site must be getting. To send me 2,000 its a day what does that site get? I monitor outbound links as well (through Mint) and I am lucky if I send a couple page views to something.
