We are MeFi. We must have Bacon. September 13, 2012 8:57 PM   Subscribe

Need help finding a MetaTalk thread. I could swear I saw a thread about a MeFi homepage appearing on a monitor in the background in a scene in either a movie or TV show. I was thinking it was possibly the TV show Numbers, but so far my searches of MeTa have not been successful.

(Because I want to know what MeFi's bacon number is.)

This? I checked the wiki, specifically the MeFi in Pop Culture page.

There's that Treme reference, and then there's the thing where "MEFI" is spelled out on in masking tape on the set of Mythbusters (this has come up occasionally), and then there was the time a mefite writer snuck a business named "Callout Records" into an episode of The Mentalist, though I don't know if that ever got a post per se.

I don't remember a specific "mefi homepage visible on a TV show" situation, though I do feel like I remember that being a point of speculation, ultimately shot down, in some still from a TV show or movie at one point. I wish I could remember more specifics.

On Mythbusters back wall, or so the story went. Ask Adam Savage.

Maybe it was one of my comments? I put metafilter onto a computer screen in a film I worked on, and have recently linked to it.

Six Feet Under?

Well, my memory was clearly just plain wrong. I think my faulty wiring was doing a mash-up of Treme, Six Feet Under and Mythbusters.

Both Treme's mention of our name and Mythbusters' masking tape spelling out of "MeFi" don't really count as appearances of MetaFilter. If it really was an early version of MetaFilter that appeared on the monitor in Six Feet Under that would count, but I think there's lots of reasonable doubt as to whether that's really us or not.

But, thanks to 5_13_23_42_69_666, I think MeFi does have a Bacon number after all.

MetaFilter appeared in Ghosts with Shit Jobs with Rachel MacMillan

Rachel MacMillan appeared in The Limits with Liam Card

Liam Card appeared in Textuality with Jason Lewis

Jason Lewis appeared in Sex and the City (the movie, not the TV show) with Sarah Jessica Parker.

Sarah Jessica Parker appeared in Footloose with Kevin Bacon.

So our Bacon Number is 5.

This is a community weblog. We are the community. We are all Metafilter. So, ipso facto, we all have a Bacon number of 5.

Congratulations everybody.

Thanks to everyone who tried to connect up my misfiring synapses. But most of all a huge thanks to 5_13_23_42_69_666 who made tiny stars out of us all.

It was MegaFilter, they probably found it through FinderSpyder, Facebooker, or Twitspace.

Six Feet Under?

That's what I was thinking of, thanks. Seven years ago, jesus. I feel better about being hazy on the details.

Seven years? Wow, cortex had long hair back then.

I thought they were gone entirely without the img tag.

Isn't it six? The first line has to be 'x is a member of MetaFilter'
