You know, a counter at the top of the AskMe page with the number of "resolved" threads to date makes sense to me.

It's not obnoxious, in the way a plea for favorites would be. It's not a, "Hey, I win teh internets!" one-upmanship, either.

It's just a feel-good, Life is Full of unicorns, narwhals, hedgehogs and prancing ponies, "Yeah, the community helped someone!" shout out.

I know I didn't personally help with the woman who was locked into her own room, for example, but reading that thread later, just seeing how it all played out in real time was exciting and happiness-instilling. And what about the kitteh on Devil's Tower who made it home safely?!

Somebody helped to create this unbelievable possibility of you getting laid that allowed you to thrive. Somebody told you should wanted to do you. If you've got laid—you didn't build that. Hm, some unfortunately prolongable sibilants there-- may need a little work.

I had a coffeehouse friend good looking enough that it was amusing to count the number of women's heads that would turn toward him and linger for a beat when he walked in. It was more than 50%, in my observation (not to mention about 20% of the men).

He asked me several times over a couple of weeks whether a certain very attractive woman there could possibly be interested in him. I assured him that it was clear she was (and it was!), but he resisted.

They ultimately talked, he offered to help her with her homework, and she invited him to come over to her house at a certain time on an agreed afternoon.

When he arrived and knocked on the door, she called to him to come around the side of the house and into the backyard-- where he found her sunbathing in the nude.

And he still came back to the coffeehouse the next day to ask me if I thought she 'meant anything' by that!

They finally did get together, and they were so happy with each other it lit up the whole place when they came in as a couple, but I never found out what it took to get through to him. He was a math major, and quite talented.

Hey, it feels weird to pop in on this what with the anonymous question, but the reason it was anonymous in the first place is now moot and we're kind of inside the clubhouse here in MeTalk. So... that was me.

I just really wanted to say that I'm so happy that my stupid dilemma ended up so well for me and ended up making a few people feel good, and that I love MetaFilter. You guys have made a concrete positive difference in my life in more instances than this one. This one is definitely my favorite so far, though.

And yes, I can be hilariously obtuse. Fortunately, at least one person likes that about me.

Some quick history, glancing at the OED: "brick house" may be Lionel Ritchie et al's specific coinage as of that song; the dictionary has no earlier cites, at least.

The older phrase from which that is likely somehow derived is "[built like a] brick shithouse", which is usually more a reference to a big muscles-aplenty man, though OED notes that it has some derogative-toward-women use specifically in British English as well. Brick shithouse is cited back to the turn of the 20th century, also "brick schoolhouse", "brick barn", and so on.

I was always confused as a kid by the idea of a brick shithouse because I had seen a lot of port-o-potties in my time but they were all made out of plastic. One time I used a real actual outhouse but even that was made of wood.

I was actually pretty calm... just dumb. The whole thing about actively making the decision to hang the outcome of something like that on an external force works very well for me. Come to think of it, I even learned that from a book that was recommended by someone on Ask!
