The podcast is/was/always has been a great idea, and good on all of you for hanging with it. Giving an actual voice to metafilter ( as opposed to all the ones and zeros of the purely visual aspect of text) makes it much more human. Twist my arm. Though I watched Mel Brooks tell a super simple old joke the other day (a man gets in a terrible accident, in the ambulance headed for the hospital a paramedic puts a pillow under his head, says, 'are you comfortable', the guys shrugs and says, 'I make a living?'), and nailed it so perfectly and so offhand that just the thought of it gives me stage fright by comparison.

We should really make a working document for Regular Podcast Features and assign that stuff a few days ahead of time, as long as we're being all calendar-smart about this stuff lately. Josh: tell a joke! Mention some music! Jess: what's up with mossariums? Vermont police blotter news! Matt: how's bikes? Tell us what you made pb do last month! Etc. Could be a thing.

Yeah, I've been listening to the Squeecast (which is delightful) and I really like their format - everyone brings a thing to the table and kind of prepares a little "this is why it's cool" thing, then there's discussion, then they either harass their guest or have a topic to wander off on. It works really well for keeping sometimes as many as 5 people talking without stepping on one another. Doesn't necessarily apply, but I have wondered how to make the podcast work if we wanted more of us on it at once.

I had the same impression a little while ago, but every time I've stopped and counted any given day's total number of posts, it seems to be on what I remember being the latest average (just under 30 posts per day) or actually fewer. The pace has slowed a bit on transcribing the older transcripts, incidentally,* and I don't think anyone's feelings would be hurt if you looked into getting outside help. I think only around a dozen people have worked on them so far, and I worry about people quietly burning out. If Fanscribed would be helpful with Mechanical Turk, I'd be happy to set it up.

*Of course this reminded me to check on the older transcript effort, and I just now noticed that beryllium transcribed most of episode 65 on Tuesday. (Thanks, beryllium!) So, I just set up episode 63, and I might be totally wrong about the rest, too. :)

how do transcribing services work exactly? i'm trying to picture how a computer or non-mefite human would be able to understand the breadth of wordage on display. from bizarre usernames to memes to metafilter inside-jokes to puns-- how would that happen?

another option would be some more intensive crowd-sourcing like the askme backtagging you guys mentioned in the podcast. but that was (excuse my lack of computer knowledge here) coded onto metafilter somehow, if i'm not mistaken. anyways, so not the same way, but psychologically having a little constant nudge there.

30 seconds is short enough to be do-able, but even then, some clips are hard, what with the cross-talk. some clips are harder than others to get right. tagging is less of a commitment. keywords vs all the words. not all 30 secondses are created equal.

Depending upon how the final transcript is used, you can image how it would enhance a google subject search if submitted properly. Just one example.

Also, metafilter is a text-based site. Many deaf and hard of hearing have full access to the site *except* the podcasts which, IMHO, adds to the community and admin feeling of the site. I am a huge fan of access for everyone and the podcast is a blast to do.

Appreciate all of the work you have done on this episode!

This might be too meta, but the transcripts get mentioned around 74 minutes in - here's a link to that timestamp in the Fanscribed transcript. I want to do that on the wiki, but I don't see a way to do it without really ugly formatting.

I think the cheaply done transcriptions are farmed out to people on Mechanical Turk. Quality would probably vary drastically.

I could imagine getting an audiofile per speaker, and seeing how Dragon Dictate handles it. Though, I tried that myself, listening to the podcast & repeating everything into a microphone - it took longer to do that & fix the errors than to just type it in the first place.

well, as i said before, i think having a constant push a la the askme backtagging would help because as you said, though i wasn't involved in the earlier transcripts and don't know how they worked out, but on this one at least it definitely seemed to be a small number of people doing large chunks over several days. be a lot easier if there were more people involved. i don't know how popular the podcasts are, or how many people read the transcripts, others might have a better idea on that.

twist my arm, I would love reviews. The way that works is that it plays two 30-second segments, back to back. If you're the only reviewer, though, the next review you get overlaps 30 seconds with the previous one, which gets tiresome quickly. The best way I found to cope with that, was to listen just far enough into the second part to make sure that nothing got lost or duplicated between the segments, then move on to the next review.

I ought to document that on the wiki, and also link the related wiki pages on the Fanscribed page.

Not really necessary IMHO. I tend to seam-up on the read tab through the edit button as I go. Although I did see several "??" near the beginning of the transcript (signifies WTF are they saying) that I wanted to go over to see if I can clarify the parts that were more difficult.

Yeah, I found myself with a few hours to kill this weekend, so I jumped in. Never done any transcription before, and I was somewhat inconsistent in terms of style, but it was fun nonetheless.

twist my arm, no worries. It's easy enough to miss a contributor.

TangerineGurl, while I'd say the reviews aren't necessary, they're certainly helpful. I've done 30 or so of the reviews that are done so far, and I feel like I've corrected an error or so in pretty much every segment (whether that be typos, missed words, misheard phrases, or something that I can make out that the transcriber could not), so if someone was so inclined, it's worth doing.

Richard Garfield, the inventor of Magic, has a PhD in math. He studied combinatorics and was a student of Herbert Wilf, who was in general quite interested in What Computers Can Do. (I knew Wilf; I do not know Garfield.) Although reasoning from the advisor's interests to the student's interests is dangerous, this is a long-winded way of saying that it wouldn't surprise me if the thought of Magic being Turing-complete had at least crossed Garfield's mind.

That's not what I was thinking, but now that you mentioned it, I did! I'm still thinking of the wiki as the long-term location of the transcripts, but the transcripts on the wiki can't get linkable timestamps, without some ugliness.

Askme originally shared a db table with Metatalk, and while it was all eventually ported to a nice clean table of its own the remains of those early heady askme days remain like some hidden lump of treasure beneath the grounds of the contemporary metatalk posts, invisible until you do a survey like this.

We really should probably just remove them from the db at some point since I think it's straight duplicate info, but it hasn't really been a problem either so, eh.

Pronoiac if you can find a way to have the separate audio tracks load up in fanscribed, that would surely solve the overlap issues that are most difficult to transcribe.
And if you find a way to do it, please document your work? It would be nice for the creator of fanscribed to find a way to add that feature into the software by default.

I know full-well that Skype conversations and delays therein make audio overlapping inevitable.

We don't really run into serious issues from the Skype side of things—practically speaking lag has never been a big issue there—but audio overlapping's pretty inevitable for us in any case because we're a bunch of overtalking ninnies in any case.

In any case, per-speaker files is something we could potentially make available going forward but I think Matt did some poking around and established he doesn't have those around for past podcasts anymore. I've got some of them for the last year or two worth of podcasts but unfortunately that's pre-edit raw files so they'd be unreliable in both timecode and content compared to the released product.

(Notably, in this podcast, we nearly had "Triumph of the Whale", which is an 1812 poem by Charles Lamb, an essayist known for his retellings of Shakespeare plays for children, instead of "Triumph of the Will", the 1935 Nazi propaganda film.

Also, I misunderstood Lawrence Lessig as Morris Lessig, despite the fact that nobody of the latter name appears to have done anything interesting ever. I'm sorry if I threw you by leaving off there, zamboni!

Previous podcast transcriptions have briefly featured "1896 AOL chatspeak" and "Year of the Mountain Now Dog", which I have decided makes a good birthday greeting.)

I just realized I ought to make a Projects post about transcripts, to allow ongoing conversation, but I'm not sure what link to use. Suggestions?

I was just thinking earlier that a Projects post would be a good idea! I'd suggest either the page on the MeFi wiki that was on the sidebar, or if a Projects post needs to be of something you yourself control, perhaps the front page of your wiki, since that also has links to all the Fanscribed pages?

Or actually, the Podcast page on the MeFi Wiki is probably a better choice, in terms of having explanation for new people wanting to jump in and extensive links, if you want to use something from that wiki. (If you need to use your wiki as the project page, adding a link to the Fanscribed notes page might be a good idea.)
