What's the plan for US Election Day? Is there going to be one thread continuously updated with the election results or a bunch of them. Conversely, will there be no talk of the 2012 election at all? Do the mods have the day off and will the site be inactive?

I actually do have the morning off... not because it's election day, but because it's Tuesday. (But, I'll be back for the late night drunken weeping and rending of garments or drunken revelry and cat and dogs lying down together, as the case may be!)
I think that there will probably be a main election thread if someone makes a good election post, and possibly others if other people make other good posts. I think it would be helpful if people concentrated on info, updates, etc. in the main election results/news thread, and not a ton of goofing-around comments. Not that everything has to be SRS BIZNS, but Metafilter threads don't work very well as a continuous Twitter stream per individual when there are a lot of people participating.

I hope whoever makes the thread packs it full of voting information. Believe it or not, there are still places (I'm looking at you, Ohio) where the voting process hasn't been finalized yet. A lot of laws have changed and many laws were reversed or disabled for the election by the courts.
I was secretly hoping for Rhaomi, or filthy light thief, but really the post just needs to have some good links in it.

Hey, this was covered last week. Long story short, this bloggie isn't making any super special plans. as noted by Jessamyn.
Someone will probably make a post to the main page about the election. People will comment in said thread throughout the day. Hopefully it'll be a generally peaceful thread, with plenty of discussion and little flighting.
If someone or several someones has ideas for a post about election day, perhaps they could say so in this thread and everyone could coordinate. Maybe one person writes the main post and others agree to chime in different aspects within the first few comments? Or they can write the post together or the code ninjas could set up a poll or quick and dirty betting site to see who comes closest to predicting the results.
Or we just go into a Google hangout and play strip Dungeons and Dragons. It has nothing to do with the election, but it's just a suggestion to kill time while standing in line to vote...

If anyone has trouble voting on election day you can call 1-866-OUR-VOTE it's the hotline for Election Protection a bipartisan organisation that an answer voting related questions and help anyone who has trouble voting in the election.

You can also call your local or state party (generally the one you happen to agree with) and they can send help. I've spent the last few elections (munis too!) as an emergency poll attorney for my local Democratic party, where they call me and I go racing over to the precinct with my 44-page manual and start defending democracy. I haven't actually been activated so far, because we have a good local board of elections and well-trained poll workers, so problems don't tend to escalate, but it's sort-of fun to be a potential attorney-superhero for one day.
But yeah, there are just legions of attorneys for both sides, and for the state, all waiting to physically GO to voting locations immediately in case of problems to try to sort them out RIGHT AWAY. A friend of mine who's a local prosecutor spends the day with a tape measure responding to calls that people are campaigning within 100 feet of the polling place or whatever it is (it's in my manual!) and throwing politicians out of polling places, which also sounds fun.

In related news, I was finally feeling cautiously optimistic enough to drop a chunk of change on Intrade, where an Obama win looks quite underpriced at ~67%, but:

The popular vote section is even sweeter. Romney is at 3.70 to win by over 0.5%, but 538 gives him only a 19.8% chance of winning the popular vote at all.

I'm flying to Arizona so my wife can spend time with her family, all of whom actually live closer to us than Arizona, and then I'm going to watch my brother in law play in a golf tournament. You guys can come too, but you'll have to find your own places to sleep.

So, curious, I did a search on "Obama" on Metafilter, and skipped to the end (by date); it's so interesting, and if you're interested in such things, I recommend you do it too.

I'm hoping someone puts together a great one (rather than merely crossing a low bar) because I'm on the ref desk on election night and I'd like to be simultaneously biting my nails and informatively telling students where to vote.* So, a good Metafilter post would fulfill both needs.
*If you've got a good site for college student voting rights, I'm all ears! The university's page is not so hot and I'd like a solid multi-state page (we're on the border) to point folks towards.

I'm starting to feel like after you fuck up two elections in a row, you should lose your electoral votes until you get your shit together. Or maybe we score elections in each state based on how well they're run on a variety of objective criteria, and the lowest-scoring two states each have to give up a member of the House each to the highest-scoring two states. It would add an interesting element of good-government gamesmanship to the overall electioneering game. Or a political party that engages in voter suppression could lose its 501(c)3 status in that state until the next election cycle.

especially all the assumptions that he'd be running in 2012 for the first time.
I was actually at that speech, live and in person from the DNC being some sort of official blogger back before there were really important news bloggers and then just shmoes with websites. Only Josh Marshall (and maybe Markos) were in their own official news-y place, the rest of us were up in the blogging aerie way in the back of the Boston Garden or whatever they call it now. And to anyone who was there, you could tell that something was up. The Bloggers were sort of celebrities of that event too as the DNC patted themselves on the back for being so hip to what the kids were doing these days. And we got to meet Obama.
He came to our Blogger breakfast (as well as Howard Dean and no one else that I can remember) and talked to us about harnessing the power of the internet for good--this was right after Dean had really killed it with his online presence--and I don't remember what else. And I remember thinking "This guy is a first term Congressman, why is he here?" and I can't remember now whether it was before or after this that he gave his speech. All I remember is that they had those signs that they gave everyone that everyone held up and lost their minds shaking. You can watch the speech here.
He was one of only two people, in all the speeches we heard who mentioned libraries at all (the other was John Kerry). And it was clear at the time that he was being fast-tracked to someplace, I just wasn't sure where at the time.

Only Josh Marshall (and maybe Markos) were in their own official news-y place, the rest of us were up in the blogging aerie way in the back of the Boston Garden or whatever they call it now. And to anyone who was there, you could tell that something was up. The Bloggers were sort of celebrities of that event too as the DNC patted themselves on the back for being so hip to what the kids were doing these days. And we got to meet Obama.
He came to our Blogger breakfast (as well as Howard Dean and no one else that I can remember) and talked to us about harnessing the power of the internet for good--this was right after Dean had really killed it with his online presence--and I don't remember what else. And I remember thinking "This guy is a first term Congressman, why is he here?" and I can't remember now whether it was before or after this that he gave his speech. All I remember is that they had those signs that they gave everyone that everyone held up and lost their minds shaking. You can watch the speech here.
He was one of only two people, in all the speeches we heard who mentioned libraries at all (the other was John Kerry). And it was clear at the time that he was being fast-tracked to someplace, I just wasn't sure where at the time.

The Obama speech at the 2004 convention thread is like stepping back in time. Not just for the discussion over when/if he'd become the first black President of the United States, but right down to people linking to Real Audio of the speech and someone else linking to Quicktime, because Real Audio was too choppy. It really was a post-9/11, pre-YouTube world.

When do the results start coming in? I know the news shows aren't supposed to give away too much early on, so us west coasters don't get discouraged and not vote -- screw you, Hawaii, I guess -- but if everything goes smoothly, with no recounts or such, when's the earliest we can expect reporters to be calling it?
(I ask because I'm thinking about skipping my daughter's soccer practice and staying home to watch Glen Ifill. I'm that good of a mom.)

VT hasn't given its EC votes to a Republican since 1988 and this year won't be any different. Interestingly, prior to that it went Republican every election 1854-1988 except the Johnson/Goldwater election. Last election VT was Obama's largest margin of victory outside of DC and Hawaii.

This will be the first election I vote in where results are almost certainly likely to be announced before our polls close (which isn't until midnight EST). On the other hand, it's not like alaksa's three EV are really in play.

So somewhere in ancient MeFi History the site had a Jabber server that people could use to chat in real time. We thought it might be fun to have that again on special occasions like US election day tomorrow.
So we're looking for a few brave people to test out the chat server tonight. We'll have it on for a few more hours, and if all goes well we'll fire it up tomorrow so people can chat about election results.
We set a Jabber server up at chat.metafilter.com. If you're not familiar with Jabber, there are some quirks that you need to know about. First, every person has a Jabber ID which looks like an email address. We've set it up so that your MetaFilter Jabber ID is similar to your MetaFilter username. The standard format is
You can connect to the Jabber server in a number of different ways. Usually you have a chat client of some kind like iChat, Trillian, Adium—anything that supports Jabber. You give the server your Jabber ID and MetaFilter password, and then you join the group chat called MeFi. (Not all clients support group chat, so there might need to be some experimenting to find out which ones will work.) We also have a web client set up at the chat.metafilter.com domain. So you can log in there with your Jabber ID and MetaFilter password, and you should automatically join the group chat room.
Once you're in the group chat you can converse with anyone else logged in. We've been testing it a bit today, and we'd like to get a few more people trying it out before tomorrow. Some caveats: it's finicky and we've only tested a few clients. So just be aware that it might not work. We still have bugs to work out. Thanks, and hopefully we'll see you on the Jabber server.

I was secretly hoping for Rhaomi, or filthy light thief, but really the post just needs to have some good links in it.
I'm probably out for the count, with continued baby duties and settling down in our new house, which are nearly mutually exclusive activities. This leaves little time for internet use. Is the chat room still open right now?
I have tried logging in via the web interface on both URLs using three browsers (Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Firefox) and via Trillian and I can't get in.
With Trillian, I can "Browse for conferences..." and attempt to Join the MeFi group, but regardless of what I try at the "Invite Contacts" login screen I can't get in -- I just get an error message of "There was an error when joining the chat room: your reserved room nickname must be used."
Here is what the "Invite Contacts" login screen says for me:
Room Title: MeFi
Server: conference.chat.metafilter.com
Nickname: [I have tried both "Jacqueline" and "Jacqueline@chat.metafilter.com" here, without success]
Password: [I have entered my MetaFilter password here, without success]
Am I doing something wrong or is it just down right now or what?

UPDATE: I'M IN!
Via Trillian, using "jacqueline" (all lower case) in the nickname field is what finally worked for me. So if you're having problems logging in, try your MeFi user name in all lower case instead.

Thanks to some great detective work by Jacqueline, we now know that all-lowercase usernames work more consistently with the web client. So if you're logging into the page at

Does anyone know how to make Messages on OS X show usernames in the chat room?
Weirdly, they show up in Notification Center just fine, but not in the app itself.

This is pretty cool. Working in Pidgin btw. Glad I saw it mentioned, any chance for notifications for stuff like this? I suppose I could just be oblivious but yea, almost missed it.

We mentioned it in the existing MeFi Election Day thread and here. We sort of want it to work to take some of the chat pressure off of the Election Day thread but not necessarily to be an All-MeFi free for all.

I still use Lynx about once a month to download things via ssh onto a remote computer. It makes me feel really l33t every time.

For Pidgin users that don't want notifications of people entering / exiting chat room be sure to fix the value in the Plugins, specifically Join/Part Hiding.
Worked for me anyway. Looks like at least one other person on slightly different version had luck as well.

go to file - join group chat
once you get the window for that, select the jabber server form the pulldown and type these things in
Chat Room Name: mefi
Server: conference.chat.metafilter.com
Handle: your-username-in-lowercase
Than click join. Should work.

i got in via pidgin, but i'm now trying to get in using bitlbee via irssi. i've tried both 5222 and 5223 using SSL ... pb, do you see anything in your logs when my connection hangs?

Installed Xabber on my Android phone and managed to connect. Scrolling by too fast to read though. Yinz are chatty.

We're using a self-signed SSL certificate which your client might be rejecting. We're going to try to get that fixed today.

hmmm ... i definitely did log in successfully with pidgin. i had to approve the cert, but it worked.
i assume the irssi/bitlbee problem is a tls/ssl library problem ... i'm gonna increase verbosity on my side. thx.

Hey octothorpe -- could you let me know what account settings did you use to login using Xabber? I'm not sure if I'm having a network issue or doing something wrong, but it's not connecting for me and unclear why.
