MeFiSea -- Metafilter Seattle get together, this Saturday, June 8th, at Gasworks Park. We have two picnic tables reserved starting at 10 am, but I figured we could show up around 5 or 6, have a little potluck and maybe retire to a nearby bar afterwards if the park rules against alcohol [and nearly everything else] seem too meddlesome. Sound good? See you all there.

So, does this mean no hearing aids are allowed?

Those Seattle park police must be strict.

I might be able to make it to the bar portion, when will you know which bar you will go to?

Potluck? I'll bring the haggis and deep-fried twinkies.

The map portion below shows the area to the north of the playbarn (which is east of the mound and the gasworks remains). We have tables #3 and #4 (I don't know if the actual tables are labeled).

Hey, that sounds fun. I'll be there unless something strange happens and I end up going camping after all. I haven't been to Gasworks yet this year...

Y'all better post some pics. You know what us east-coasters look like. We wanna see you Northwesterners....

Me and my camelback of Franzia will be there.

I think.

Regardless, I'm happy to see a non-bowling related MeFi event.

I'm very concerned about this. The last MeFi Seattle meeting was held at Speakeasy, which subsequently burned down. If you somehow curse Gasworks as well, a lot of people's Fourth of July plans are going to be ruined.

endquote, actually, we have decided to follow the fire this time. You are correct in that the Speakeasy fire happened very soon after the first MeFiSea gathering. There were then some gatherings at places that have yet to burn down (e.g. bowling alley, pool hall). Last month though there was the big marina fire a short ways from Gasworks. So we have reversed it all.

Camelback of wine, good idea ariel. If anyone needs potluck ideas, feel free to email me and I'll assign foods Otherwise, bring something semi-nutritious. Anyone found coming without food will be forced to run uphill to the horrid mini-mart to buy organic mangoes. If anyone has a frisbee or lawn darts, bring them as well. The tables cost a little bit o' scratch to reserve, so pony up a buck or two to gluechunk when you see him.

How many of y'all are vegetarian?

Me and my camelback of Franzia will be there.

Say, whatever happened to those fake Coca Cola wraps for beer cans, anyway? Oh, here--scroll to bottom.

And there's always pre-mixed margaritas, daiquiris etc. in 1 liter Mountain Dew bottles, too.

I am vegetarian! I like not-dogs in a mild organic cream sauce.
posted by arielmeadow at 11:29 AM on June 6, 2002

yes, I will be there! (with my brand-new camera) I am not a vegetarian...I have no idea what I'll be bringing...I have a haircut on Capitol Hill at 1 pm and I'll roll by after that.
posted by epersonae at 9:11 PM on June 6, 2002

I'll be there sometime around 5 or 6--my part time and only job right now is hitting the rummage sales for books and records. Zappa in New York double album, Michael Bloomfield retrospective double, an early Blue Oyster Cult, an early AC/DC and two Frank Sinatra 78's from the 40s were my top scores last week (and beaucoup books)--Anybody looking for anything in particular? Order now and I'll keep an eye out. Jeez, I need a haircut, too. I dread having my picture taken. No candid shots please. I will have to think about a dish.

So, are any of youse whizbangers going to be online via wireless laptop during this soiree?

Is there an open 802.11 base station within a quarter mile or so? If so, I'll be happy to bring my PowerBook.

The rain is supposed to be gone by tomorrow afternoon. But if for some reason it isn't, perhaps we should have a nearby alternate location to go to. Any suggestions?

Won't have a laptop but will certainly have my VisorPhone, which is close enough for many purposes. ;)

I mis-spoke: haircut isn't until 2 pm. but no big deal...tho I agree with gluechunk that an alternate location in case of rain might be appropriate. somewhere in Fremont, perhaps?

also, I will be getting on a bus in Lakewood at noon at the latest (with no cell phone)...so leave a note or something?

GOOD MORNING

it is pissing down rain here in Seattle [amazing, no?]. I recommend as a back-up plan the Varsity Inn Restaurant at 1801 N. 34th Street [map].

5 pm.

We will leave a note if all goes terribly wrong. If we're a totally over 21 crowd, the Northlake Tavern & Pizza joint looks good. Does anyone wanna pony up a cel number and be an onsite coordinator?
posted by jessamyn at 9:14 AM on June 8, 2002

cool. I've got all the directions & bus info written in my Visor. see y'all there. I'll be wearing an orange sweater & jeans.

It's sunny up here in Lynnwood suddenly. Hopefully the good weather is moving southly.
posted by kindall at 12:48 PM on June 8, 2002

Gak! I don't think I'm going to be able to make it. Hopefully someone else will be able to provide the Franzia...
posted by arielmeadow at 4:06 PM on June 8, 2002

where was everybody? I wandered around the park, didn't see anybody who looked familiar (unless y'all were the people playing frisbee?), went up to the Varsity Inn Restaurant at 5pm, and....

yes, it had closed at 3 pm

I waited until 5:15, took a couple of pictures for posterity, and took off. :(

I'm reflected in the window of the empty restaurant

I missed y'all, tho I feel like a gaper...I always seem to get into these sitcom-esque mishaps.

Geeze, how many people took photos of the Varsity Inn today?!

epersonae, I arrived at the park at about 5:15pm (I was on a bike). I rode around and found y2karl near the water. More people arrived after that, but more on that later. I wish you could have waited another 5 minutes!

not to worry, the entire evening was like a sitcom-esque mishap, there will be a photo essay later, promise. sorry about missing you.

btw, jessamyn was correct, Tyson does have an Arthur Ashe tattoo.

Yep. It seemed all for naught. Ran into Jessamyn and patrickje on their way to Northlake Tavern (from Gasworks). Went there some twenty to thirty minutes later only to find a major crowd waiting to get in and no recognizable mefites in or out. Total bummer.

Next time, maybe we'll have better luck. Don't nobody get down on the solidarity of us MeFiSeas. We're translucent! We're Proud! We'll be Motherfuckin' back for a real shindig soon!

Dammit. Sorry I missed y'all.

How does that work? You kinda murmur 'Metafilter' out of the corner of your mouth at random people, and hope they don't look at you like you're a nutbar?

Don't forget about the pics for whatever did ensue! Enquiring mefites want to see....
