MeFi FanFare Summer Camp! Consider this thread our arts & crafts cabin, let's macrame up a list:

I'm thinking a short series just through September of films that take place at (or somehow involve) summer camp. Films like:

Meatballs
Heavyweights
Wet Hot American Summer
The Parent Trap (either one)
Sleepaway Camp (crossover with Horror Club?)
Adams Family Values

Who's in?

I'm probably not in for a FanFare thing, but I emphatically am in for rewatching the Thanksgiving play from Addams Family Values right now, at my desk.

Thank you for reminding me to do that.

I'm going to have to check on the availability of childhood-favorite TV movies Poison Ivy and Camp Cucamonga.

God I just love you so much.

Thinking about it, this could also be a neat excuse for MeFi Viewing Parties in various cities so maybe if this happens there could also be an IRL component for people who are interested in that and live near other MeFites?

DC has the greatest MeFites and I dream of the day when we will beat New York and Chicago for meetups. My husband and roommate are both on here so I've thought about calling nightly "dinner" meetups in IRL for the three of us just to get DC on the board.

The day you do that, Mrs. Pterodactyl, the Chicago Cabal* will breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Believe it.

And thus was launched the opening salvo in the great Metafilter Meet-Up Wars of the early 21st century, a conflict that would redefine how humans interacted with each other.

It was finally settled by the Grey Accord, a pact that was supposed to be signed on next Friday, wait, no, sorry, I mean the Friday after that, oh shit guys, I'm really sorry, I know I'm the one who posted this Accord but it turns out I have a family thing that day, can we maybe move it? Wednesdays are no good for me, that's when my gaming group meets, could we try a Tuesday, but not too early? Ugh, no, that's where we signed our last Accord and it was way too loud. Not there, it's not convenient for my preferred form of transportation so I can state as a fact that no one will come. Don't worry about them anyway, they always RSVP "yes" for these Accords and then never show up so it's impossible to get an accurate count and then the servers hate us...

The Meet-Up Wars rage on.

OMG, Boston MeFites, can we do this? I volunteer to host a viewing once I have, like, a home that is not full of boxes. First I need to find a home to put the boxes in.

A little random here and maybe a little off topic, but is bug juice called bug juice because it is sweet and attracts bugs or because of the (often) red color or something else?
posted by 724A at 9:26 AM on June 23, 2014

I think it's because of the color, but Buffalo's Crystal Beach loganberry soft drink is purple and also called bug juice.

It might be possible to shoehorn Dirty Dancing in there.

Yes, I would like us to shoehorn Dirty Dancing, please.

Hey, if Addams Family Values counts, Dirty Dancing counts.

This might as well be open to films that fit the other definition of camp, also.

Dirty Dancing is a summer vacation film, a summer resort film, but not really a summer camp film.

True, but expanding to include "summer vacation in general" movies could benefit us all. Especially us Jaws and The Sandlot fans.

If resort counts, include A Walk on the Moon.

My votes go to Adams Family Values, Dirty Dancing, and Wet Hot American Summer.

All of the titles mentioned so far are available to rent streaming on Amazon for $3 at most, except The Parent Trap remake (which is for sale streaming for $10), Little Darlings, Ernest Goes to Camp, Poison Ivy, and Camp Cucamonga (which is going for $90 on DVD, so you know it's a good movie).
posted by doctornecessiter at 10:49 AM on June 23, 2014

I've put together a google form so we can vote on choice #1, it includes all of the movies listed in this thread so far (except for Sleepaway Camp, let's talk to the horror folk about doing a crossover). Don't let that stop you from listing more! We'll add them to the vote options for upcoming weeks. I'm not married to it being only camp choices, why not open it up to just a summer theme? That way we can watch Summer School, starring 1986's Sexiest Man Alive Mark Harmon.

DC Meetup thread going up shortly.

Awesome, voted! Thank you so much for suggesting this, I think it's a great idea and I've never used FanFare before so I'm glad to have a guided introduction to it.

I voted and before you go changing the locks, sweetheart, it really is the best Ernest movie.

Ballot box stuffing time. I demand satisfaction for this outrage. You are no longer invited to the nightly dinner meetups at our house.

Please still cook thought.

If we're feeling really snarky about it, we could watch (500 days of) Summer. Or if what you really want is camp, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, really camps it up.

Dirty Dancing may not be a summer camp movie, but it should always be watched back-to-back with Red Dawn, which has camping in it.

I vote for Tommy.

Horror Club is the camp across the lake and they spend all day sharpening machetes and fashioning crude masks.

I was going to vote for Heavyweights today during my lunch break.

But lunch was canceled today, due to lack of hustle.

Camp.

(note: I went to a competing theater camp in the area for years, and will boo everyone in this film. That should not deter us.)

The red color in fruit punch/ bug juice was once and may still be derived from cochineal, a Mexican bug. So it's probably been closer to a bug than to anything resembling an actual fruit.

If there's voting, Moonrise Kingdom should in the mix too.

Not trying to alienate by catering specifically to DC MeFites, but:

In the interest of catering specifically to DC MeFites, let's all do Meatballs on the week starting August 10th. It's playing at the AFI Silver theater on August 10th and 11th!

Are you ready for the summer?

The winner is Wet Hot American Summer! Here's where you can find it. FanFare discussion thread'll go up on Tuesday.
