15th Anniversary June 25, 2014 9:59 AM   Subscribe

So, it was brought to my attention by eamondaly that the 15th anniversary of Metafilter is coming up in a few weeks. Here's some suggestions as how to celebrate:

MONTH OF MEETUPS (either MoM15, or MoMu15)! The Chicago Metafilter Cabal (there is no cabal) is getting together as often as we can in July to celebrate our friendships, and the site.

Checkout out our plans here.

Remind yourself about the 10th anniversary here.

Set up your own Month of Meetups get together here.

What are you going to do to celebrate 15 years of the blue?

Do we have a list of places we haven't had meetups yet? I think this would be a good opportunity to fill in the map a bit more... I can do Wyoming if that one's still open on the bingo card.

We were gonna go to New Orleans after organizing an EPIC anniversary meetup but then I got lazy/forgetful/whatever. But! I know that the mostlybeans are headed there and so how can it fail to be epic? It can't!

I know that there's no requirement that I attend all or even most of these meetups, but just simply looking at my "upcoming events near you" side bar the last couple days has sent my introvert alarm all atwitter.

There are MUCH more exciting backgrounds you could have used, cjorgensen.

phunniemee: you will put in an appearance at every single meet up, and you will wash your face and put on lip gloss, and you will not wear sneakers, and you will let great aunt sissy kiss you on the mouth and you won't make that face or you will get no dessert for a month. do you hear me, young lady?

Also it should go without saying that if I'm not at a meetup this month I'm almost certainly at home on my couch in my underpants eating americone dream straight from the pint while watching south park. And now you know.

Yeah, the night after the Tenth was one of the three worst hangovers of my life. It was the first time I had cartoon-style hangover symptoms like photosensitivity and stuff (I woke up, stumbled around until I found something to use as a blindfold, then went back to bed. Then I prayed for death.).

Bring on the fifteenth!

Here's what I am going to do: I am going to make a puppet video and mathowie's gonna be the punchline! I needed a nice guy for the bit, and was going to use Mr. Rogers (who doesn't like Mr. Rogers?), but in honor of #mefi15 I'm going to change it to Matt!

I need someone to do the music. Memail me if you want in.

item -- be the change you want to see.

The colllected Chicago Cabal (there is no chicago cabal) meetup wisdom is to pick your thing and your date based on when you want to do it, and get people to join you. Don't wait for others to plan meetups for you. Don't post a tentative meetup without an iron hand guiding it to a decision point. Don't worry about low attendence, you picked a thing you wanted to do anyway, right?

Is it just because DFW is really spread out geographically that makes the meetups so tough to wrangle?
posted by shakespeherian at 8:30 AM on June 26, 2014

item, please see here for instructions on how to make a meetup.

Specifically:
Back in the day, the Chicago Cabal* would hem and haw for days about when and where to meet, trying to accommodate everyone. Half the time the thread would just fizzle out and we wouldn't meet, and the other half we'd get together only to discover the people most insistent about the food or the locale or the time bailed. So now we just go to the worst place on the worst day and we all whine for four hours. And really, isn't that what MeFi is all about?

Ironically, the last Dallas meetup was created by me, an adjunct member of the Chicago cabal (TINCC). It ended up being a 2-person meetup and ridiculously late due to a very delayed flight, but it still happened, and was still a fun time. I don't think there's anything wrong with micro-meetups.

Sorry for your troubles, item.

The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area is also pretty spread out but we've been managing meetups roughly every two-three months now, usually with at least a dozen people in attendance. It takes a combination of having a variety of interesting things to meet at, some kind of core group to sustain momentum, and a willingness to call two people drinking beers a meetup if that's what it takes.

Having meetups kind of regularly -- not necessarily often or on a schedule, but more than once a year -- also helps. I think it's easier to look forward to resuming conversations with people you're familiar with in person, harder to get enthusiastic about meeting a bunch of people you can't remember whether you felt the same way about in person as you did online.
