15th Anniversary June 25, 2014 9:59 AM   Subscribe

So, it was brought to my attention by eamondaly that the 15th anniversary of Metafilter is coming up in a few weeks. Here's some suggestions as how to celebrate:

MONTH OF MEETUPS (either MoM15, or MoMu15)! The Chicago Metafilter Cabal (there is no cabal) is getting together as often as we can in July to celebrate our friendships, and the site.

Checkout out our plans here.

Remind yourself about the 10th anniversary here.

Set up your own Month of Meetups get together here.

What are you going to do to celebrate 15 years of the blue?

Do we have a list of places we haven't had meetups yet? I think this would be a good opportunity to fill in the map a bit more... I can do Wyoming if that one's still open on the bingo card.

We were gonna go to New Orleans after organizing an EPIC anniversary meetup but then I got lazy/forgetful/whatever. But! I know that the mostlybeans are headed there and so how can it fail to be epic? It can't!

Yeah, the night after the Tenth was one of the three worst hangovers of my life. It was the first time I had cartoon-style hangover symptoms like photosensitivity and stuff (I woke up, stumbled around until I found something to use as a blindfold, then went back to bed. Then I prayed for death.).

Bring on the fifteenth!

You know what chuckles my willy? At some point Chicago turned into Mefi central. Fuck, I can get better pizza here in Dallas Motherfucking Texas than Chicago, and everyone knows the availability of a decent pizza is the true compass of a region's worth.

You want to know what else chuckles my willy? A light tickling with a feather on the inside of my thigh.

You want to know the one other thing that chuckles my willy? The Great Pizza Wars of the 21st Century. Man, those were hilarious.

In summary: no one has posted a possible meetup in my area. I'll give y'all 24 hours and then I'm unleashing some sort of jokey weaponry that I'm too tired to come up with right now, but mark my word it'll contain pizza crust, feathers, and the blood of Macaulay Culkin.

item -- be the change you want to see.

The colllected Chicago Cabal (there is no chicago cabal) meetup wisdom is to pick your thing and your date based on when you want to do it, and get people to join you. Don't wait for others to plan meetups for you. Don't post a tentative meetup without an iron hand guiding it to a decision point. Don't worry about low attendence, you picked a thing you wanted to do anyway, right?

item -- be the change you want to see.

I organized Dallas' 10th anniversary meetup spectacular. We had a fucking belly dancer. I've done my time.

If someone else in DFW wants to work on this, great. Dallas has always been super weak on the meetup front, drawing +/- 3 attendees, despite being the fourth largest metro area in the United States. Other than the 10th (which was well attended - I spent days hustling and pleading and pestering folks to show up), the only other Dallas meetup I attended that I can remember more than 4 people total showing up was the first one I went to after moving here in 2007. It was at Ufez Jones' house and it was a total drunken blast. Fuck, dios was even there.

I have it on good authority (via a billboard I saw out of the corner of my eye somewhere on I-30) that the ultimate meetup will be happening soon. All true Mefi believers will be sucked into the sky for a banquet of love and bliss and harmony and endless perfectly cooked meats (with plenty of vegetarian options). My Mefite brothers and sisters, this is the meetup I will next attend and the wonderful thing is you're all invited! Doesn't matter if you're a member in Dallas or Billings or Seattle or Bangkok or Moscow or, heck, even Fort Worth, you're welcome as long as you've paid your $5 membership fee (or were one of the lucky ones like myself who predated the fee and were able to instead spend that $5 on gummy worms and dollar store crack pipes). Close your eyes and imagine the best meetup possible. I'll save you all a seat.

Is it just because DFW is really spread out geographically that makes the meetups so tough to wrangle?
posted by shakespeherian at 8:30 AM on June 26, 2014

item, please see here for instructions on how to make a meetup.

Specifically:
Back in the day, the Chicago Cabal* would hem and haw for days about when and where to meet, trying to accommodate everyone. Half the time the thread would just fizzle out and we wouldn't meet, and the other half we'd get together only to discover the people most insistent about the food or the locale or the time bailed. So now we just go to the worst place on the worst day and we all whine for four hours. And really, isn't that what MeFi is all about?

Persistence, consistency, and determination. That's how meetups happen.

DFW is spread out, I don't drive, and Dallas mefites - despite there being a metric shitton of us registered - have never been super vocal on the site. Except for me, of course. Hey how about we turn this thread into one about how much everyone loves me? I'm losing both of my beloved cats on Saturday due to awful circumstances that are way out of my control and I could use some ego tickling. Love me.
posted by item at 10:08 AM on June 26, 2014 [1 favorite]

Ironically, the last Dallas meetup was created by me, an adjunct member of the Chicago cabal (TINCC). It ended up being a 2-person meetup and ridiculously late due to a very delayed flight, but it still happened, and was still a fun time. I don't think there's anything wrong with micro-meetups.

Sorry for your troubles, item.

The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area is also pretty spread out but we've been managing meetups roughly every two-three months now, usually with at least a dozen people in attendance. It takes a combination of having a variety of interesting things to meet at, some kind of core group to sustain momentum, and a willingness to call two people drinking beers a meetup if that's what it takes.

Having meetups kind of regularly -- not necessarily often or on a schedule, but more than once a year -- also helps. I think it's easier to look forward to resuming conversations with people you're familiar with in person, harder to get enthusiastic about meeting a bunch of people you can't remember whether you felt the same way about in person as you did online.
