A pet peeve, to me, is something intensely subjective and harmlessly annoying that it's unreasonable to attack and stupid to waste time decrying. And yet...and yet we all have them and it's fun to list them. Mine(sorry SpecialK for singling you out)are:

All are harmless, all are part of MetaFilter's charm. and it's true that pet peeves say more about the peeved than they do about the peevee. Still...

Continued by a very long blockquote that is a big yellow link to an article that is only three paragraphs long. Or, better yet, a quote taken completely out of context that happens to support...

Jeez, you people are cranky. I guess I'd have to say that I find real-world behaviors a whole lot more irritating and horrifying than any stylistic breach of MeFi etiquette. But then I live in the asshole capital of America.

Here are some things I like: news stories for the front page not from CNN or Yahoo, members' "specially different" relations to the English language (the ordinary becomes so tiresome), and all the different ways -- from ascii rabbit to emoticon to small type to Simpson's quote to straightforward disclaimer -- people have tried expressing "I'm saying this in a funny tone of voice" to let other members know they're not being cruel or mean; even when those modes of expression may be silly or annoying, I appreciate the intention.

Of course, my real pet peeve is shoddily-constructed paragraph-long sentences.

Posts about articles about other articles about blogs. Posts linking to the same topic as another post had only hours earlier. Posts involving failing/succeeding web companies. Likes: Posts on cool photography or art. Posts on flash games. Posts on pancakes and/or haiku. Posts on good web design. Posts on Supreme Court decisions. My pet peeve: making a spelling mistake in a comment and following it up with another comment correcting your mistake, although it's pretty obvious that you meant "believe" and not "beleive" or whatever.

Bonus points: doing it in a really geeky way, like "s/beleive/believe"!

No, OK it is annoying, careless, and disrespectful to the community, so yeah it's OK to pull people up for it. My biggest pet peeve is "your" vs "you're". Also, I will occasionally run across "should of" used when "should've" was what they were trying to say. "But the spell check said it was okay..." So what? Any random collection of properly spelled words will be spelled correctly.

Yes, I'm a bit of a freak about spelling and grammar. It really fucks up dyslexics. I don't mind it that much on the web, but I have started to use a red pen to correct spelling and grammar on resumés. While I'm conducting the interview.

My other pet peeve is the Clavinists. No, not Calvinists. Clavin, as in Cliff Clavin from the TV show Cheers. We all know people like this. They pull random information out of their asses and then pass it off as facts. For example, in one of the discussion threads on EN World, some fuckwit posted that Ted Turner had spray painted swastikas on the dorm rooms of Jewish college students. When asked for a link, he said he found it on the web. How about a URL next time? Nobody I've spoken with can find any information to back this up.

- Feeling preemptively peer-pressured into mentioning Godwin's Law before anyone has the pleasure of using the N-word because you wanted to use the N-word in a perfectly legitimate non-facile-comparison-of-random-person-to-Ns way but knew that as soon as you did someone would call Godwin on you, and then feeling damned if you do, damned if you don't for having self-Godwinned and wishing you'd just mentioned the bloody Nazis in the first place, seeing you were actually talking about extreme examples of cultures of violence, and not mentioning them in such a context is like the old joke about trying not to think about elephants.

- Pointless unkindness toward and "pointscoring" on fellow users. Also, bitterness, selfishness, cruelty, verbal abuse, and threats of physical violence

- People unwilling to step up and defend the values of the site when they are abused

- The existence of the Spell Check button

- The fact that the "new comments" tag rarely works

- The fact that I cannot more easily track activity in older threads

- The fact that threads effectively die after 3 days, making cries to put new-but-related links in the original thread preposterous

- The dilution of the site by Sportsfilter and Blogwhatchacallit

- When new signups are turned off

- Doubleposts (by multiple people or by the same person)

- Users who email me irrational rants out of the blue to call me every name in the book with little explanation of what provoked them so

- People who think they have all the answers and come here only to proselytize
