A 13k starting a thread? Not on my watch! I say we segregate metafilter. posted by geoff. at 3:51 PM on July 13, 2002
Folktrash: No.
Everyone else: Please let's not have this discussion again. posted by Su at 3:52 PM on July 13, 2002
The chiding and bragging about user numbers is very tongue-in-cheek. I know I very seldom check anyone's user number unless they post something really whack or their name is new to me. It does serve as a reminder to go easy on someone if they are new. posted by Kafkaesque at 3:54 PM on July 13, 2002
What's strange is I never noticed until I read that thread, and started hovering over names, and lo, you can see numbers, and lo, they seem to be in order, and lo, the lower the number the older the member.
For the last 30 minutes or so, since reading about that post, I haven't been able to stop peeking at everyone's number.
Someone help me! posted by folktrash at 3:57 PM on July 13, 2002
Just don't start lording it over those of us in the 14,000's. posted by timeistight at 4:01 PM on July 13, 2002
And just to chime in, almost completely off topic, in the whole why do you love mefi thing...
I'm reading through all this, it's usually it's quiet, and suddenly I burst out in a hefty chuckle. I love that.
(on preview: good size chuckle at timeistight. Not quite as hefty as at this, but perdy close.) posted by folktrash at 4:03 PM on July 13, 2002

It's still tongue in cheek. It's just when you get to the really low user numbers it's a different kind of cheeks. posted by Kafkaesque at 4:42 PM on July 13, 2002
Right up until the point when you jump in and really participate. Just talk. Number 1 is cool, as are most, if not all, of the other 14,000+. Everybody here also has their own, very distinct, personality, and a newer personality is (I hope!) no worse than one that has been around for awhile - just different.
Also, thanks for the shout-out, matteo, and the opportunity to toot my horn where appropriate. posted by yhbc at 6:21 PM on July 13, 2002
Don't give the user numbers any thought.
Mostly, people still judge each other based on the size of their genitalia. posted by dong_resin at 7:18 PM on July 13, 2002

I am not a number, I am a human being!
Speaking of which and oddly enough, on Blogroots, I am Number Six.

Heck, I think higher numbers are cooler.
There are fewer of us in the 14,000's than there are under 1000-- plus since registration is closed, having a 14,000+ user number means we're either super cool or super sneaky/stealthy/smart.
Or all of the above.
You product-of-two-primes users are so pathetic. posted by nicwolff at 1:46 PM on July 14, 2002
I agree with iceberg. (41 and 317... hoo-ah!)

See, the thing about the numbers is not that they're one, two, three, or even four digits long. (although all you post - 999 digit people, I feel for you, I do)
It's the combination that matters. I mean, 123, ya'll. Look at it, it's like perfection.. it seems to be so simple, yet without that simple, perfect series, no other numbers would follow. Each number announcing its position, relative to the series. 1+2=3, 3-2=1. Ah, the symmetry!
