What is your favorite username? December 10, 2014 7:57 AM   Subscribe

Well, it's December 10th, and you know what that means: it is FAVORITE USERNAME DAY. Share yours below!

This is not a request for your favorite MEFITES (all of whom are surely wonderful, delightful, never-grating human beings with fantastic smiles and glowing auras), but rather, just their NAMES. Which names stand out to you as particularly clever? I would like to start with these two, which make me laugh whenever I see them:
Spathe Cadet (whose name I am always compelled to say out loud)
Short Attention Sp (which is honestly one of the single funniest jokes I have seen on this site)
HAPPY HOLIDAY, AND LET'S GET SHAREY

Oh, I love all of you equally.

Actually, that's one of the weird little joys of going through the backend admin stuff on a regular basis; I get to see all of the new usernames, not just the ones that turn out to belong to regular/conspicuous commenters, and so I get to laugh a little bit about really under-the-radar references and punny names to distract me while I sift out spammers and SEO duders. There are a fair number of users who have no admin notes on their accounts other than "ha! --cortex".

I enjoy all of the "phrase" usernames. I don't know if they are (or were originally) a distinctly Metafilterian phenomenon, but they strike me that way. There's something wonderfully freeing about realizing that usernames don't have to be short, mostly lowercase, single words.

Having said that, I've always been partial to The Whelk. It's pithy, easy to remember, and although it makes a claim to uniqueness, it's probably a pretty a fair claim.

I have grown to loathe my own username but can never quite seem to push the big red button and move on to a better one.

That was when I joined, and there was a brief unannounced period where signups were back open after the massive post-9/11 influx forced things to be shut down, but I don't think many people realized it. I've gone in and looked at usernames registered around that time and there's a whole bunch of usernames like that, including "who", "what", "where", "when", etc. that don't seem to have ever really been used; just seems like someone trying to make sure that yes, signups were in fact fully open. And this was way before the limited number of signups open daily as well, so it wasn't that.

For me, it's more that over time, I stop noticing usernames, however clever they may be. Habit dilutes them into unremarkable proper nouns that do nothing other than denote the people behind them. I like threads like these because they give that habit a good solid jolt. That habit-breaking is also probably part of why "eponysterical" took off as a stock joke.

Worth noting that it was first invented by griphus as a hypothetical ridiculous username.

I almost feel like there needs to be a separate category for the in-joke usernames (xBongzilla69x, The Riker Who Mounts the World, Paphnuty, etc.). I'm a big fan of some of the in-joke ones too, but it's a different thing from the pure, unprompted absurdity of something like "Suddenly, elf ass" or "little cow make small moo" (assuming those aren't just in-jokes that I've somehow missed, a paralyzing possibility).

I especially like the cognitive-linguistic puzzle that the long-phrase ones, especially the ones that aren't noun-phrases, impose on their interlocutors — because it's so hard to figure out how to address them. (Or maybe it's only the ones that contain no nouns at all? I'm not quite sure what the implicit rule for "most syntactically puzzling username" is but I like all the ones that impose that kind of extra cognitive burden.)

"How do you pronounce it?"

I look around to take in the scenery and I see a bunch of young men running back and forth over a line made up of shoes. I knew just about Kabaddi after seeing it on MeFi to be fairly certain that's what I was looking at, but not enough to be able to be able to explain it to my traveling companion. I probably described it as "playing reverse red-rover while holding your breath."

Fraud and squad rhyme (at least to my ear) when I say them. Also, the rarely seen Mrs. DirtyOldTown has a username with an awesome story behind it I never get to tell because she's never around here. Her username is Comrade Doll.

For a while there, my lovely partner developed a habit of "You don't know how good you have it" stories, relating to having grown up in Communist Romania. My roommate, way back when, would do a killer impression of these stories, culminating in this bit, "Growing up in communist Romania, we there weren't even real toys. I only had one toy. It was a block of wood with a face painted on it named 'Comrade Doll.'"

She being a woman with a fantastic sense of humor, no one laughed harder than she did. Hence the username.

I have a non-secret sockpuppet account (if you don't get the reference, you never saw the Animated The Tick) I created for making comments that were too crazy, evil, silly or sick for my normal sensitivities (which have to be VERY crazy, evil, silly or sick). But I stopped logging into the account after I accidentally posted a FPP with it (it WAS about a superhero comics satire, but still, not intentional). I did receive communication from a Mod just saying "we know who you are" (so that Permanent Record contains more info than some of you think). But I think a LOT of the names of characters in superhero satires like The Tick, Freakazoid, SuperChicken, Dr. McNinja, Axe Cop or others would be great MeFi nicks (if I ever make another sockpuppet, it will be either Wombatman, King Radical or Werewolf of London, Ontario).

My current nick is an anagram of 'one fell swoop' in case it wasn't obvious (but my old one was an anagram for 'end well', which, when uncovered, did not wendell).
Other anagrams for me include: So Open Fellow, Woes of Pollen, Spoof One Well, Lone Wolf Pose, Feel Low Spoon (SPOON!), We Pool Felons, No Pee Follows, Few Lone Pools, Polos Flew One, Eel Flow No Ops, Sole Wolf Peon, Fowl Nose Pole, Elf Opens Wool, O Plow Oneself, and Sleep Now Fool!

Heh, yep, it's a Satie reference. The piece that it references ("Trois morceaux en forme de poire") is Satie at his snarkiest - apparently he wrote it as a response to Debussy's suggestion that he should do more with structure and form. (In classic Satie style, even though it says "trois morceaux" right there in the title, there are actually seven pieces. Also, "poire" apparently has a mildly insulting double meaning in French; I actually don't know if there's any relation to the English idiom, but I think that meaning is cool too and also fun to riff off.)

Anyway, glad some other MeFites are getting a kick out of it! I wanted something different from my usual handle when I signed up, because I was being paranoid and didn't want something that would be easily linked to my real name (though I don't care nearly as much now and that ship has pretty much sailed anyway). I also thought those phrase-length usernames were super cool and weren't something I'd seen outside of MeFi. I now realize it's a little awkward to say at meetups (and maybe makes me sound kinda pretentious when I explain it) but other than that it's served me well.

A non-exhaustive list of usernames I really like, some of whom have already been mentioned: desuetude (a great word); croutonsupafreak; dialethia; louche mustachio; le morte de bea arthur; Ferret Branca; hapax_legomenon; adipocere; 5_13_23_42_69_666; two lights above the sea; This, of course, alludes to you; this, of course, alludes to sex (who has tragically not posted anything); and maybe my favorite (though he's not spending much time on MeFi anymore) Help, I Can't Stop Talking!

No worries, MonkeyToes, being a better cat is a good thing to be reminded of, for those of us with and without whiskers.

And I'm pretty sure the dot in my name is a carry-over from the account standard on some UNIX mail system I was once one, which probably was just duplicating the format for the domain name on the other side of the "@". Thinking about it, my gmail account also uses the dot as a separator. I guess I just decided what names on the Internet look like some time in the 90's and haven't changed since.

If memory serves, that was exactly the premise. For some reason we were getting a strange bumper crop of "straight plays where one character is a sock puppet and everyone else is an actor" scripts in the early 2000's. One year we even got six completely different such plays where the topic was specifically about the aftermath of 9/11. It was bizarre - and I still think I somehow missed some kind of memo.

Liesl: [insert clever name here] is unwittingly responsible for my having dallied for years to buy a Metafilter account. I figured if all the good ones have been thought of, to the point that someone would have to resort to placeholder text, I'd never have a chance to come up with something original.

And so I joined with my high school German class name, several years later.

forgetful snow: I'd have just gone with [insert cleverer name here]. Oh but then someone would probably drop in with [insert cleverest name here] and we'd have to shut down registration permanently.

The tragedy of my username is that it came into existence under the most grave of circumstances. You see, I had the best metafilter name ever picked out. Oh, it was good. The perfect combination of subtle yet funny. Just passing over the name would make the reader smile, maybe even chuckle to themselves. It both had the feel of metafilter and yet was a nice inside joke to myself. It fit the vibe of the site. It was witty, it was clever, it was sublimely delightful - it was the penultimate name.

Except that Metafilter wasn't allowing new members at the time.

So months go by, and there I am, holding the best metafilter name ever close to my heart. More months go by. Finally, FINALLY new member slots open. Hey! I can join! Yay for me. Except, I can't remember the most amazing username ever. I didn't even tell quin because I wanted to surprise him. So now that I've forgotten the best username ever. I never told anyone because I was so proud of my awesome name, I wanted to reveal it in all its beautiful glory to the whole world in one shining moment! And due to that vanity, I had no one I could ask. No shred of an idea what it might have been.

I sat staring at the screen. Not only is it gone, but I have zero ideas. My mind is blank with the anguish of having forgotten. And I have no idea if new signups will close again. And so I despairingly typed [insert clever name here] and hung my head in shame.

(To this day, I don't remember what that username was. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

I love the sheer variety of names on MetaFilter. More than anywhere else, people have been really creative. I was not - using the name I use everywhere; sometimes I wish I'd chosen "Another message from the snore factory" or something, given my penchant for enormous posts.

And you don't think that faint of butt is hard to live up to? In one way, or another.

Anyway, yeah, reminds me of this violinist who's name is Faultless.

I can't claim full credit for my name:

Alex Trebek: Welcome back to Celebrity Jeopardy. I apologize for what happened before the commercial, and would like to assure the audience that all three contestants are now wearing pants. That said, let's take a look at the scores. Ozzy Osbourne has negative 79,000 dollars.

Ozzy Osbourne: All aboard! [laughs]

Alex Trebek: Fantastic. Martha Stewart has a commanding lead with zero.

Martha Stewart: Alex, I've transformed this simple game show podium into a rich cornucopia of winter flora, using dried figs and snow-tipped eucalyptus. I really treasure it.

Alex Trebek: Wow.. And, in third place, [sighs] Sean Connery.

Sean Connery: We meet again, Trebek. I noticed you weren't able to sit down during the break. What's wrong sweetie, did you have a date last night?

Alex Trebek: Thank you, Mr. Connery. Now let's take a look at the categories for Double Jeopardy. They are: Potent Potables, Drummers Named Ringo, States that Begin with Californ, Richard Nixon, The Number After Two, Famous Kareem Abdul-Jabbars, and finally, Don't Do Anything.

[Connery buzzes in]

Alex Trebek: What is it, Mr. Connery?

Sean Connery: Knock, knock.

Alex Trebek: Who's there?

Sean Connery: Me, the guy who slept with your mother last night. [laughs]

Alex Trebek: Let's just go with Drummers Named Ringo for 400. And the answer is: This Ringo was the 'Starr' drummer for the Beatles.

[Stewart buzzes in]

Alex Trebek: Martha Stewart?

Martha Stewart: I'm so terribly lonely.

Alex Trebek: I know.

[Connery buzzes in]

Alex Trebek: Sean Connery, the drummer for the Beatles.

Sean Connery: Craven Morehead.

Alex Trebek: Who is Craven Morehead?

Sean Connery: Apparently, you are.

I could be "my defiled lungs," "edges mindfully," or "indulged myself," because apparently indulged and deluding are anagrams and I did not know this.

Also we used to play bar trivia as teamname: [citation needed], so I have a real soft spot for that one.

Well this is curious. By idly following links to some user profiles mentioned here, I found one of a person who I remember being awful to me when we were teenagers, who I haven't thought of since that time, and whose posts here I've enjoyed! I described all this to my partner this evening and gave particulars about why I'd found that person so awful and realized via that narrative . . . oh, I was kinda awful, too.

When I hear Devils Rancher I think of how people in the days of yore would attribute unusual geographic formations to the work of the devil, giving them names like Devils Tower, Mt. Diablo, Devils Pass, Devils Elbow, Devils Butthole, whatever. It's a thing.

I once made a trip up to Derbyshire expressly because I wanted to find a t-shirt that read "I Crawled up the Devil's Arse;" it is one of the great tragedies in my life that such a shirt did not exist.

I'd been lurking for a while and there was a Mafia FPP by Marisa Stole the Precious Thing that really got my attention because I saw some of that stuff and my parents had told me about stuff they had seen and why we never went out for Italian anymore. Our favorite restaurant got ventilated by Thompsons the last time we tried to go. The building fell down.

I think it was more the username than the post that made me join. Stealing is wrong, Marisa. Give it back.

ArmyOfKittens because cute!
a birds because hee.
a corpse in the library, I think one of my first ever comments was a silly joke about your name! ("And look where you ended up!")
CBrachyrhynchos, your name was so fun to figure out how to say that I now take a moment to enjoy saying it to myself when I see your comments.
nebulawindphone, your name always evokes a haunting science fictional image of such a device and I find it neat.
Sticherbeast, your name sounds like a pretty rad beastie. Also I always check to see if your name has that t yet but it's cool it doesn't have to have that t.
klangklangston, someone else once speculated that your name is pronounced "Klangk Langston" and ever since then it has been so for me.
And orme. orme, orme, orme. Look just come out and admit it okay, because it is a thing that inflames me with certainty regularly.

Your name is like orz but for a centaur, isn't it.
