The second most horrifying-to-me thing about the mouse nest (the first being its very existence) is that I was pretty sure those mice were more productive than me during that 6 week period, maybe even if we don't adjust for size but certainly if we do.

Just as well, MCMikeNamara; according to Wikipedia, mice only live for a year or two, and can have a hundred babies or so in that time.

CURRENT HAIR STATUS

If you need some extra scene-setting, that's a cropped blurry bathroom mirror selfie after a full day of moderating a super grumpy thread on the blue. I think it gives the hair a certain repeatedly-raked-back-in-annoyance je ne sais quoi that helps it out a little, honestly.

Well, I thought it was pretty cool, though appear to be in a minority. Am hoping its owner/landlady brings it on the next trip to the UK, as it would be pretty awesome to see during a MeFite meetup (isn't show-and-tell a thing Americans do from childhood onwards, or something, anyway?).

Whoever is playing around with the clicky thing during the podcast recording...

It was the sounds of mouses clicking, all three tracks were picking them up, but I think mine was the loudest. It's kind of tough to avoid, given we're loading tons of webpages as we talk.

Re: Mathowie's windshield & windshields in general.

In modern unibody vehicles, the windshield and rear windows are structural elements, and if the adhesive and surface prep is not perfect, the structural integrity of the vehicle is compromised. There are softer adhesives that are more forgiving, but then you're driving a vehicle that essentially has a bracing element made of rubber.

I will second Cortex's recommendation of a Snark tuner. Clip-on tuners are critical in a group situation because they work through the vibrations of the neck so you can tune even when other people are playing. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to tune via a microphone tuner when the OTHER PEOPLE WON'T STOP PLAYING GODDAMMIT.

Yes. Github Pages is awesome, and I am the public gets to benefit from all of that VC money. I host the client side of every one of my projects there. If your project is already in git, you just created a `gh-pages` branch and that's what goes up. No SCPing/FTPing, no setting up git post-receive hooks or any of the usual deployment flim flam. For free!

he had been stopped at a light and a mouse had crawled out from under the hood of his car and then disappeared

My parents told me the same story when I was a kid. They were sitting at a light going to work together and a mouse or rat came out of the hood and ran away from the car, and this was in the middle of a city in Southern California, with no nature anywhere nearby (I'm guessing it was a rat from their food business).

Anyway, for years afterwards, I would pull up to stoplights and brace myself for someday seeing an animal pop out of my hood. It never happened though.

I saw a mouse run across the floor of the driver side floor of my truck last autumn. That — and the teeny tiny poops — alerted me to my mouse problem. But mine was never as bad as jessamyn's. I had to fabricate a mesh screen to put over the heat register so the little fuckers couldn't get inside anymore.

Still, jessamyn's car's mouse nest was nothing compared to the one I found in the pressure tank box in our barn. We use foam board, and a 100-watt bulb on a thermostat switch to heat the space and keep the livestock's water from freezing — did I mention it was -19ºF/~-29ºC last night? — and it turned the space into a mouse winter holiday site. After cleaning that I stapled dryer sheets inside in an effort to keep the little fuckers out. So far, so good.

Fourthing the clip-on tuner recommendation! You can get one for about four bucks on eBay, shipping included, if you don't mind waiting for it to arrive from China. (If you want if shipped from the U.S., that goes up to about six bucks.) Well worth it.

Dune Encyclopedia

I did that post! Most of the source links are dead, but there's one copy left here. It's such a deep, subtle piece of science fiction. I've never even read Dune (gasp) and I still love the thing. The historical perspective in the History of Atomics alone (page 290 in the link above) is delightfully fractured.

also: it's raow-mee! rhymes with cow-see. Ray Omi, with his wrongheaded and downright offensive views on Pakistani reality TV, has developed into my sworn nemesis, and I shudder to be associated with him.

I finally finished. I had 7 minutes left on it when I picked up my preschoolers. I ought, hey, 7 minutes, how much swearing can there be? The answer: holy fuck.

It IS possible to get a healthy meal at McDonald's. Order one of the chicken salads (not the one with bacon you fool). Order grilled chicken instead of crispy chicken. Specify when ordering that you do not want GLAZE ON THE CHICKEN. THERE IS A BUTTON FOR THIS.

This prevents your salad from being a disgusting mess.
