MeFi Cross Stitch Samplers? February 5, 2015 2:20 PM   Subscribe

So I was on my profile page, and accidentally hit the "Pin It" button on my browser. The Pinterest window that popped up suggested just one rather surprising image to pin.

Since when has MetaFilter been automatically generating cross stitch samplers?

Poking around in some other people's profiles I have found this only occurs if there is no profile picture available.

Is this something new that came about with the redesign of the site? Or is this just another one of those wonderful MetaFilter secrets that I've missed for years? Either way, it makes the blue feel that much more homey for me.

Whoa, that's kind of awesome. I wonder if Pinterest does any automatic favicon-to-cross-stitch thing?

Sadly (in this case), this is what Pinterest does now if you hit the "Pin It" button on any site without any images for Pinterest to pull.

Anyone wanting to make a Metafilter quilt has a pretty good template now.

Actually what you're seeing there is the Matrix. Turns out we're all just naked, pod-bound prisoners of the machinists, our body hair being grown and harvested as a source of thread with which they cross-stitch the internet that we assume is "the real world". We wait for the #1, who can manipulate the cross-stitch matrix - even without needles! - and free us from the desert of the real.

How weird. This is what happened when I hit the Pin It button when on this page.

And mine looks way different from the rest of those. Maybe I've used the math tag too many times.

Huh. This is probably the coolest Pinterest thing I've ever seen. Good idea on their part.

I just get the MetaFilter logo. :( No cross stitch patterns for me!

Hmm. Neat. This seems like a good place to ask: Who are some pinteresting MeFites to follow? My own board of mostly inspiration for a tattoo design I'm planning and quirky home improvement ideas is here.

What the what? I also only get the logo. Are you guys living in a different but slightly overlapping and much more fiber-arts-oriented universe?

I use my Pinterest intermittently, but have just recently started using it as a kind of visual idea board for things I'm writing or thinking about writing. It's kind of fun.

And I have Halloween boards that I share with my students (well, okay, and because I love Halloween).

A+ Matrix pastiche, the quidnunc kid. Best I've read in ages.

(Does anyone know how to get rid of that "Pin it" button that hovers at the top left of images? I installed it during a spate of pinning things that has now died down and now I have no use for it, and it bugs me.)

Hey, how do I get a "Vote #1 quidnunc kid" button?

Joseph Conrad is Fully Awesome: If you're running the official Pinterest extension, there is an option to hide the hovering button. I'm on Chrome:

Chrome options -> More Tools -> Extensions -> Scroll to the Pin it Button -> click "Options"

And then you can check a box to hide the button. Hope this helps!

Y'see, this is just another reason why mathowie is a good guy. When something cool and unexpected happens with MetaFilter, he says "Hey, that's cool!" instead of "Oh, yeah, I planned it that way from the start."

That, and he doesn't afraid of anything.

What's even more alarming is that Matthew McConaughey is on the other side of that quilt pushing books off your shelf.

Yea - I get that now on any articles I pin without pictures to go along with them. So, I keep ending up with pretty cross stitch samplers of things like "Differential viral levels and immune gene expression in three stocks of Apis mellifera induced by different numbers of Varroa destructor." and "Evolution of the syphilis epidemic among men who have sex with men."

I should really start selling these on Etsy.

Hold on a second, really? Or do you have some sort of Penrose tiling image generator handy? If so, I want it so bad can I have it please

I might...

Oh man oh man. In a fit of math-nerdiness a week or so ago I scoured the internet for a generator of Penrose tilings that exported to .png, but found only tragically dead links, one weird Java thingamajig and this distressingly neat Blender tutorial which leads with a tantalisingly clean-looking tiling, despite the fact that to get something usable I had to separate the congruent and identically-oriented quadrilaterals into different layers, render them with a Toon outline and take individual screenshots before combining them all in Photoshop. ANYWAY. I would love to know how you're doing that is what I'm saying.

Also this follow-up post on the same blog is excellent. Gosh I love non-periodic tilings.
