"Her fresh voice will be very welcome in the SF world." June 2, 2015 5:13 PM   Subscribe

Congratulations to MeFi's own Andrhia, whose new novel Revision has shown up in so many neat places recently: NPR ... Tor.com ... Mary Robinette Kowal's "My Favorite Bit" column ... The Qwillery ... Publishers Weekly (starred review) ... And, just a few days ago, Kirkus.

From the publisher's description:
Mira is a trust fund baby playing at making it on her own as a Brooklyn barista. When Benji, her tech startup boyfriend, dumps her out of the blue, she decides a little revenge vandalism is in order. Mira updates his entry on Verity, Benji’s Wikipedia-style news aggregator, to say the two have become engaged. Hours later, he shows up at her place with an engagement ring. Chalk it up to coincidence, right?
As Andrhia mentions in the Qwillery interview, we can expect more work soon:
Right now I'm writing a YA novel about the Luckiest Girl in the World (literally), which has a mythology involving luck-eating magicians, the Ancient and Honorable Order of Turtles, and attempted human sacrifice. If things go according to plan I should be done writing it this summer ...
N.b.: I don't know Andrhia, but I couldn't help noticing all this! So I asked her about it, and she's OK with it appearing on MeTa.

I had the book auto-delivered to my kindle the day it was released, after hearing about it from Andrhia's blog (where she also writes some really forthright content about modern publishing's ups and downs, btw). It's really, really good, guys. Take a chance on it if you're in the mood for some character-y sci-fi!

I have bought this book and now need to figure out how to get it out of Amazon's walled garden.

Maybe I'll just read it online.

What up Andrhia! She's a long time colleague dating back from The Beast (ARG for the AI movie), Perplex City, and Zombies, Run!, not to mention a very close friend. She really deserves this success and I can't wait to read the book, which is already sitting at the top of my to-read pile at home.

I'm not even half way through my recovery from a broken foot, so this is now on my list of to reads while I sit on my ass with my foot in the air.

Wow! Congratulations!

I too aspire to be Metafilter's Own! Metafilter should become a de rigueur finishing school for starting writers, where novelists come to hone their wordplay and percolate new ideas. A Clarion Writer's Workshop, but online!

(All we need is a new subsite! An inward-facing FanFare: call it "FirstDraft" or "InProgress" or "CritiqueMe" or something!)

Eeeee thank you for your enthusiasm, everyone! :D :D And especially Hold your seahorses, I am so glad you read it and liked it already! WOOO!

sammyo, I was thinking about hitting Readercon this year but it's looking like a no since I never got my act together to like... make travel plans... or beg my way onto programming... but maybe next year? Though I may be going to ConFusion in January. I'm really not sure how to decide which cons to go to and under which circumstances.

Oh and solarion, if you need me to send you an unlocked epub, I think I know a guy who can hook you up. MeMail me?

"we never truly know as we read whether the decisions Mira make are hers or have been nudged but either way, even the nudged decisions could have been hers to make in the first place."

There's this virtual space on the wiki: Published Authors. (It could probably use some updating.)

And congrats, Andrhia!

I keep meaning to work on that. I'd like to put together a sub-page organized by genre, too.

Also, you totally mention adding salt to shitty coffee in your book. MeFi ref?
posted by oceanjesse at 12:30 PM on June 14, 2015 [1 favorite]

It may well have come from MeFi! I've had that knowledge in my brain for so long that where it came from has long disappeared.
posted by Andrhia at 4:18 PM on June 14, 2015

Ok, so I looked around MeFi for a FPP about adding salt to coffee, and I couldn't find anything beyond a ton of AskMeFi comments, so I was probably wrong about that attribution. I finished your book today and it was a fun ride regardless. 😄
posted by oceanjesse at 9:14 PM on June 14, 2015

I remember reading about it in this thread about adding stuff to coffee but I don't remember if it was the first place I read about it. Probably it was, though! Unless it was ChowHound. But probably here.
