US Election thread pony request February 24, 2016 9:16 PM   Subscribe

Can some sort of pony help me keep track of all of the election threads?

I've enjoyed the ongoing threads about the ongoing US election / reality TV clown circus. As far as I know This Trump thread and Nevada and South Carolina are the latest.

Some of these turn into ongoing chats about the election which I enjoy, but since I don't always read the site every day sometimes I miss the start of a new thread.

Is there any way someone could sidebar the latest election threads? Or is there a consistent tag that would help me find them? (I guess election comes close, does that miss any of them?)

I think using the sidebar for this is unlikely to work, but if we agree on a consistent tag we can totally add it to the outliers. There haven't been *that* many election threads yet.

For the tag, I nominate "apocalypse2016".

I wish there was a Mefi styled primer for the election process and candidates for, the non Americans, who want a quick reference guide from normal lefty people, so they can sound clever and authoritative in cafes in Sydney.

Asking for a friend.

The tags, "ourlongnationalfacepalm" and "eternalnovember" have so far not been used. On the other hand, "election2016" is not only clear at first glance, but has already been used for some threads back to June of last year... but I'll be sorely tempted to use it if I get my shit together for a "What you need to know about the March 13 German state elections" post.

It's very simple - taff is having breakfast. Camp-Os are a popular Australian brand of breakfast cereal named after a Rugby Union player. You can get white Camp-Os (vanilla) or dark (chocolate). If it's served in a bowl with skim milk, that's 'flat', if you get it to go in a special mug, that's 'tall'.

Seriously though, this is a tough election to write a guide for without about a billion if-then statements. That's what makes Trump so scary. In normal circumstances, you could predict his demise and breathe easy. We aren't in normal circumstances. We all already predicted his demise long ago and were proven wrong. In this election there are a ton of wildcards and we just seem to be adding more as we go instead of clarifying things.

Let me just say this as personal opinion that I think you won't end up embarrassed if you repeat: America in 2016 is a flawed country in a million different ways. As a person from a country with gun control that works, you know we can be complete idiots about things. That said, America in 2016 is not a country that is going to fall to fascism. Despite the media hysteria. Despite the obvious huge problems with racism and xenophobia. Despite the various class resentments. This is a nation with a great commitment to concepts like egalitarianism and multiculturalism. Even Trump will tell you he welcomes legal immigration. He's married to an immigrant! We are not going to allow the worst of his agenda to happen. I'm a total lazy slob who talks a lot more about politics than I act. I'll be in the streets to prevent it if necessary, because the people he wants to deport are friends of mine I've worked alongside.

They are the least likely people to be criminals you can imagine. They are the people who when faced with the choice of turning to crime instead move a world away to work for shit wages doing hard ass work to support their families while never complaining. Neocons on the right talk about a new American century via using the military to expand our global power. I imagine one founded on the simple fact that we brought in so many immigrants with that level of integrity, intelligence, and work ethic that we can't possibly end up failing.

So, I think if you want to come off as streets ahead say this: They are probably going to reject Trump. Most people in America do not support his bonkers agenda. But if he does get elected due to some wildcard like Hillary's FBI investigation, the American people will find another way to stop him and his supporters.

"Campos" is Australian slang for a person who sleeps rough – usually with a tucker bag, by a billabong. In Australia you can skim flat with a skimboard, usually, but not always, with a didgeridoo. A "white" is a type of kangaroo bred for food. I'm pretty sure Taff is breakfasting on 'roo sausage while skimming with a swagman.

I am awfully disappointed in you, Taz, for spreading such lies.

taff just sent me a text, demanding I come to the Gray and "defend the campos".

Campos is in fact a mutation of 'camp as', ie, that person is very camp, in the sense of favouring that particular style or aesthetic. Or, to use it in a sentence, "Oi, that bloke is camp as!". Yes, we Australians are 'well classy'.

She is indeed having breakfast. taff likes to surround herself with the kind of men who dress well and with a bit of flair - generally running buddies to tend to the slender and lithe, or 'flat' in the local vernacular, referring to their enviable abs. And because she is very big on being sun-safe (Sydney has very high UV), she favours the ones who are diligent about sunscreen and hence rather pale. But when the bill comes, she generally takes more money from the plate than she puts in.

Yes, gentle mefites, taff skims the flat white campos. And we should defend them. They have suffered enough from her petty peculations.

redthoughts is a complete and utter mischievous bastard. Campos are rabid drop bears. Terrifying in their kill accuracy. We turn the (usually) dead pale males in to rugs. It's more fashion forward than cow hides. But we only take enough from the top of the chain to ensure ongoing genetic robustness. We really do only skim the flat white Campos. Isn't that right, smoke?

Taff told me I could only have a glass of her wine if I came here to defend the campos.

So um, it's pretty good. And maybe it's made out of dropbears or something.

I swear she's mobilising the whole of Sydney tonight around this one important issue.

(I'm not even 100% sure what campos tastes like actually. I live in the Wild West. We only have pubs not cafes.)

Maybe where you come from, but around here CampOS is a sixth-generation cloud-based operating system and web browser that presents information in a somewhat arch and affected way. It gives you a great feeling of insight into daily events, but its color scheme and presentation can be hard when you've just woken up so most users use a professional flat white background to skim the news.

Yes, definitely.

As many states are doing the primary / caucus thing today, am hoping a few MeFi's in them will comment with their experience of going out and doing the selection thing. The first polls open in about an hour in Virginia.
