[hilarious title] December 14, 2016 7:50 AM   Subscribe

So as the sun finally begins to set on the dumpster fire that was 2016, let us remember that there were a few glimmers of light amidst the darkness. For every flower that grows on top of the shitpile, so too are posts with brilliant titles to be found amongst the never-bloody-ending threads of horror. What titles brightened your day, drew you in, astounded you with their cleverness, or just made you smile? Come share.

Maybe corny but I was pleased with I put my thing down, flip it and reverse it for the recent post about matrix multiplication.

Can I expand this inquiry to include tags as well? Because fuckoff2016 certainly made me smile. (Well played, billiebee.) I think there are plenty of FPPs this year that could be retrospectively tagged that way.

A recent one that I begrudgingly favorited and that no one who wasn't a wrestling fan in the late '90s will get: Raw is Jericho

I'm keeping it weird, baby! Viva The Tick, and thanks, oneswellfoop!

I'm a fan of "the man of twists and turns'" posts. Sometimes his titles make me grin, or are just perfect:

* ack! thppt!
* at least I won't die of dysentery
* OPERATION FANG
* someone needs a semiotic square
* he should have eaten the other five
* it has to be seen at least once
* τ

Also, a shoutout must be made for Wordshore's election threads. Some of those titles were fantastic.

Pudu something to me by Room 641-A still makes me smirk when I think of it. I also enjoyed this recent offering from Celsius1414.

Thanks zarq for validating my probablywordshore tag and only 5 comments in :D

Ha! I missed that tag! :)

I'm so glad you posted this, by the way. What a great idea!

I am entirely unimaginative when it comes to titles, so I really appreciate it when people get creative. I normally just grab a bit of something from the main link and throw it up into the field with quotation marks around it.

It's not specifically the title, but everything above the fold in the cheese question (you know the one) baited us from the start.
Friend acquires a lot of cheese. What to do with it?
For complicated / irrelevant reasons a friend has suddenly acquired 18 pounds of Red Leicester cheese. It is good quality. However (again, complicated reasons) the cheese must be moved, used or transformed into something else within the next 72 hours or so.

The cheese is, of course, another one of Wordshore's doing.

I admit to being very proud of Mephitis mephitis, the mefite's mustelid, but I wish I'd realized that it could have been "Mephitis mephitis, the mefite's mephitid" before posting.

I just asked this question about what to sew with some extra fabric, and I am now very, very, VERY deep in a rabbit hole of planning and shopping and dreaming. Which is an excellent place to be, since the alternative is dealing with a lonely holiday season. So, thanks for the smiles!

Also, totally loved the Memories of Butter thread (426 comments about ... butter).

"Levar Burton explains how to Combat the Pervasive Menace of Corrosion" is a good enough for a post but titling it Rusting Rainbow takes it to the next level.

From that same thread, I think this comment by uncleozzy deserves more love.

It was probably about 25 election threads in when my boyfriend mentioned that he liked how all the titles were from Hamilton and that's how I learned all the titles were from Hamilton.

ChuraChura -- either way, I can totally see it included in an illustrated book with clever wordplay about animals (or maybe as the title of one in a series). Something that kids would love. Specifically, MeFites' kids. And MeFites in general. (Okay, I admit I would love to see this.)

This might be my favorite post of the year:

In Celebration Of The 80s 12" Remix

It put a huge smile on my face, as it tapped into two cool things: 1) a strong sense of nostalgia, as I grew up on that decade of music; but 2) it was something I had no idea even existed. I feel like I should have known, but I didn't, so it was just great! I was pretty young then, so I wasn't around places that would have played long remixes, and no cable TV. So while it felt like nostalgia, it was also a very new discovery.

Oh my god, I forgot to check back on the cheese thread - holy mackerel that is weird and amazing and everything I love about Metafilter.

I'm more proud that I should be of "What what: The butthole is one of the finest innovations in the past
540 million years of animal evolution."

Runner up in the title department would be "Don't bother, they're here", about an interview with the Insane Clown Posse.

Thank you, that was mine, though I was disappointed at the lack of thread comment on my "beansofthestoneage" tag after the neolithic skull manipulations. ;)

I got a good cackle out of curious nu's title for a collection of six-second groaner jokes, A loaf of Dad, a jug of Vine.

I know I favorite a lot of comments that say "great title" but the only commemt I could find that I made was this one: +1 for the title alone. I used that line just this morning. It was in reference to the post, If it's not definitive Coen infographic, it'll do 'til the definitive one gets here. but I can't remember what the actual quote is anymore! (I think Tommy Lee Jones says it in No Country For Old Men?)

The one title of my own that I'm fond of is This is what happens when you take the blue pill *and* the red pill.

"Don't bother, they're here", about an interview with the Insane Clown Posse.

I LOVE this! It works on so many levels.

The Great Cheese Heist was the gift that kept on giving. Months after the original caper, during otherwise boring days and boring threads, Wordshore would pop in and make some sly cheese pun then disappear back into the ether. Even Trump's moniker of "Walking Cheeto" seemed to take on a more lighthearted cast.

Hmmm, not sure about that but who am I to disabrie.

Anyway, this is an enjoyable and recent post title.

I don't know if this ever showed up here or not, but I just spent my Sunday afternoon crafting my very own version of the 2016 Dumpster Fire Ornament. It's now hanging on the tree, though I have some doubts about the fabric glue holding up...
