MFC & You: Video Games, Caring, and Sharing! December 26, 2016 4:27 PM   Subscribe

Come join MeFightClub's annual charity drive! This year's charities are RAINN and charity: water. The campaigns end January 5, 2017.

Back in 2007, shortly after the release of Pong on the Commodore Amiga 5000, a group of professional cyberathletes from MetaFilter banded together and formed MeFightClub. Since then, we've been getting together to socialize and destroy each other's wills to live with abandon, both in computer games and IRL.

And for what I believe will be the 7th year, we're conducting a charity drive! Thus far, a total of $28,240.10 has been given to charity through the Club. At the moment of writing, we've raised $3370.00 this year! I hope you'll join us in our drive. Our goal is to raise $4000 this year, split equally between RAINN and charity: water. I'd like to see us surpass our goals this year! If you'd rather not sign up for the official MeFightClub forums, please find direct links to donation pages under the MFC name here for RAINN, and here for charity: water. These are direct contributions to the charities, and are tax-deductible in the US.

Previous years' efforts: [2015][2014][2013][2012][2011][2010].

Whether you donate under MFC's banner or not, I hope you will consider donating to these or many, many other and equally deserving charities this year. It's been a tough one, for a bunch of reasons. I also hope you will join us for some good times chatting and playing video games! MFC has gamers from all backgrounds, and nearly all platforms. So whether you like FPS, MMORPG, RTS, MOBA, 4X, or Kaboom!, you'll find a home here. A simple registration will unlock the secret(s) of rotato!

Our campaigns for charity end January 5, 2016. Our run to capture your flag will be forever.

Apologies for the delay in posting this! I'll take the blame if you've got rotato.

There's an issue with MFC (I think with the underlying server software stav is using?) where sometimes if you have an expired login cookie and you try to load a page other than the MFC login page, you'll get this weird psuedo-infinite URL (that ends when the repeating sequence runs through the max characters for a URL) with a bunch of garbage on it. Try clearing your cookies and going to the front page to log in.

I will be donating before this is all over. In the name of the certain mefites that snagged me random games off my steam wish list totally randomly and in a most impressive fashion.

That's new since our recent server move, and is Not A Good Thing. I'll try and fix it ASAP.

Thanks for the heads up, thanks herrdoktor for posting the thread here, and thanks to the good people of MefightClub for making this another successful year of charitable giving. We've almost hit our targets, and there's still a week to go!

Also: working on a new MFC charity page accessible to members and non-members alike here.

Should be fixed -- non-members or members who are signed out should be redirected to the front page from deep links, members should be passed through to the appropriate thread. The fix may also have (finally) addressed the occasional cookie-expiry issue that Pope Guilty mentioned, but that remains to be seen. Coding is more or less digital dowsing for me -- when it works, I'm rarely certain about exactly why, just gratified that it does.

I return you now to whatever good-feelin-charity-related discussion may or may not ensue.
