Special Events in Fanfare January 8, 2017 5:29 PM   Subscribe

Can we users have the power to create Fanfare Special Events? Right now it's not in the dropdown list; it appears only mods can make them? I was thinking of making one for the Golden Globes. The reason for this is Kerry Washington's lipstick was really amazing

This post was deleted for the following reason: Poster's Request -- frimble

On the larger topic, cortex will jump in tomorrow. In the meantime, I can set up a Golden Globes thread, sure - y'all can always just contact us to do stuff like that.

My wife got me a set of her presidential-themed nail polish for doin' my toes as a stocking stuffer this year. I'm pretty excited.

Toes are definitely a good stocking stuffer.

So but yes: I don't have a problem in principle with making the Special Event category an everybody-can-use-it thing, but I want to look over how we have it implemented right now to see if there's any gotchas in the user experience we'd have to think about. We hacked it together knowing it was mod-only originally and that allows a bit of corner-cutting that's not always sufficient for user-facing stuff.

In the mean time, as restless_nomad noted: it's totally fine to just ping us about a potential Special Event thing, ideally with a little bit of lead time.

What would you think about using this function to create real-time threads for big sporting events?

What would you think about using this function to create real-time threads for big sporting events?

We've done it for a bunch already! In fact it was developed for the Olympics to start with and it's been mostly sports. (Here's all the Special Events so far.) If you've got a specific sports event you want put up, just let us know.

Is this an acceptable place to inquire about the free-form flag field?

There's no news on the free-form flag field, as far as I know. There are a few projects like that, which have been backburnered since the pb-frimble transition. We've had the election stuff and a side helping of major life changes for a few mods that have helped with slowing down the return to those projects. Godwilling and the creek don't rise we will get back to them in the coming month/s; I think it will depend on what level of total mod burnout results from the incoming administration. I'm not sure which of the things (offhand the free-form flags and Fanfare overhaul are two biggies but there are prob others that I'm spacing on) will be first on the list.

In the meantime folks can always write to us at the contact form with further explanations of their flags.
