Ideabasket/What Needs Love in Profile "Social Links" July 25, 2017 8:50 AM   Subscribe

This is a thread for the "social links" sections of people's profiles. Let's make this a single thread for the mods, to: (a) report changed social link URL formats, (b) "social link" services that have gone altogether and (c) throw in any ideas of popular or up-and-coming services that you'd like to see there and that have a publicly accessible URL format for people's profiles.

To chip in my own, to start:

Broken (reported):

  • Gawker Media is no more, but can get replaced with Kinja, the still-intact commenting system, whose format is https://kinja.com/[username].

  • Amazon profiles now have a URL of https://www.amazon.com/gp/profile/amzn1.account.[STRING].

  • IFTTT profiles replaced "/p/" replaced with "/makers/", they appear to be for-pay accounts.

  • Wikipedia might be better replaced with //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/[UserName]. Maybe.

    Current profile links:

500px, 8tracks, airbnb, Amazon.com, Archive of Our Own, Atlas Obscura, bandcamp (artist), bandcamp (fan), Behance, Bitbucket, Blogger, BoardGameGeek, BookCrossing, BookMooch, Casual Collective, Chowhound, CouchSurfing, Crazy Guy on a Bike, dailymile, Degree Confluence, del.icio.us, deviantART, Diigo, Discogs, Doodle or Die, Dreamwidth Studios, Dribbble, Duolingo, eBay, Ello, Etsy, Facebook, Fitbit, Flickchart, Flickr, Flipboard, foursquare, Fuelly, Gamefilter.net, Garmin Connect, Gawker Media, Giant Bomb, github, Glitch, Goodreads, Google+, Greasy Fork, Hacker News, Health Month, Huffduffer, IFTTT, Imgur, iNaturalist.org, Instagram, Instructables, Keybase, Kiva, Kongregate, Last.fm, Letterboxd, LibraryThing, LinkedIn, LiveJournal, Livestrong, MapMyFitness, Medium, MeFi Wiki, Mendeley, MetaChat, Miiverse, Mixcloud, MLTSHP, MonkeyFilter, Motley Fool CAPS, MyAnimeList, MyFitnessPal, NeighborGoods, Netvouz, Newsblur, Ohloh, OkCupid, OpenHatch, ORCID, Pandora Radio, Patreon, Patternreview, Picasa, Pinboard, Pinterest, PlayStation, QRZ.COM, Quora, Rap Genius, Rate Your Music, Ravelry, Rdio, Readability, reddit.com, ResearcherID, ResearchGate, RunKeeper, Shelfari, Slashdot, SoundCloud, Sporcle, SportsFilter, Spotify, Stack Overflow, Steam, Steepster, Stellar, Storify, Strava, StumbleUpon, tribe.net, Tumblr, Twitter, Untappd, Urban Spoon, VideoSift, Vimeo, VSCO, Wikipedia, Wordnik, World of Warcraft, Xbox Live, Yelp, YouTube

    Two related links:

In general, the place to suggest new social sites is SocialStuffs on the Metafilter Wiki.

If you want to know who else is on some social site with you, you can look it up with the Mefi Social Explorer.

I was curious about the comment about paid accounts for IFTTT. When I put my ifttt.com/p/username in it simply redirected to ifttt.com/maker/username.

So it doesn't look like the change was due to paid accounts... Or if it is, they haven't alerted users yet near as I can tell.

Umm, I'm not a huge fan of having a direct link to my facebook on Metafilter, but if anyone wants to friend me just send me a MeMail.

My feed is probably equal parts politics, religion, pictures of my cats and rants about weird goings-on on the bus

But, then again, I've not published any public applets

Not calling you out, WCityMike! I think your theory is a good one. I created a new dummy account and I too got a 404 when I checked /p/dummyaccount.

    Huffduffer

    Shouldn't this be "Hurfdurfer"?

I love Strava but I don't really think I want to share my running and biking info. I already feel bad enough about it and right now I'm only trying to beat myself. But it's the only one on that list I use so I could be convinced to add it. I know people are using this feature but I don't really get it. Is it common to go to a profile page and then check out links to Facebook, Flickr, Strava, etc.? Or is there another aspect that I'm missing?

There's a lot of academics here, and there's:

    - Mendeley
    - ORCID
    - ResearcherID
    - ResearchGate

Two that could be included are:

    - Google Scholar, as this is widely used. The field I'm in, probably more than the four listed above. My profile.
    - Hmmmm, academia.edu though hmmmm I'm not sure how widely used it is (or isn't), and there's a whole bundle of issues with it.

I have no idea if this is a bug or just a slightly opaque UI on an intentional restriction, but I have three of my bandcamp pages linked on my profile, and it just sort of quietly refuses to let me add more. I'm in a lot of bands.

wordshore, I only recieve weird spam from academia.edu though I've managed to find some good papers there once in a way. ResearchGate and Google Scholar I'd be up for.

Thank you for blowing my mind. I had no idea that this was a thing that existed in the MeFiVerse. Is it linked anywhere?

    Is it linked anywhere?

Just the FAQ entry, I think.

As I was pointing out in a recent Ask, I don't know how many of us academics actually use those social services (mendeley, etc) as social services. Can't hurt to put Google Scholar in, though.

I tried one from the list and got this: "Readability is no longer available."

    Is it linked anywhere?

There's also a fun MeFiWiki page called Shadowy Back Alleys that has other stuff like this which you might not know about. May not all be current/active.
