135: It's A Dang Podcast December 3, 2017 3:04 PM   Subscribe

It's me! It's Jessamyn! It's a damn-the-torpedoes, full-amble-ahead ramshackle of an episode as we catch up on MetaFilter, talk a bit about the recent US politics discussion changes, and just recklessly chat about this and that while I enjoy a nice big glass of wine. Covers November and runs about 80 minutes.

I have a long late-night commute home and the Metafilter podcast is perfect for the trip. I look forward to it every month.

Between the biscornu and the calendar, you guy managed to hit on two of my obscure-yet-intense interests this month. I HAVE MANY FEELS.

JESSAMYN OUR CALENDAR IS GREGORIAN, NOT JULIAN, CATCH UP TO 1582.

It's nice here in 1550! John Dee and Nostradamus are so much nicer than the current anti-wizards.

Eyebrows - before I made the post, I searched for "biscornu" and there were no posts and only two comments. One was from me and the other was from you!

I always expected Jessamyn would be better at searching for stuff.

"bondcliff's stupid post." -- Cortex. That one's going in my profile.

bondcliff: I always expected Jessamyn would be better at searching for stuff.

Language is tricky. For instance, last night I learned that "Hessians" sounds a lot like "Hatians," which can make for amusing subtitles (and could confuse people who have never heard of Hessian mercenaries, and might wonder why soldiers from Haiti might be in colonial New England).

I read the podcast description and misunderstood it to be a solo effort by Jessamyn (wine in hand).

Now I have listened to the first half and it's fine, fine, but...I kind of want a wine-fueled one-woman show, you know?

Sorry, cortex -- you're totally still awesome, month after month.

You'd have to wait a long time, but maybe a Heady Topper fueled one-woman show?

I always expected Jessamyn would be better at searching for stuff.

I am very good at searching for stuff. MetaFilter is very bad at search UX. Especially in the Classic theme which I love but is largely underappreciated.

Is there a word for a thing you don't consume because you are scared you will like consuming it and will miss it when it is unavailable?

That's how I feel about the podcast. Never heard it. Want to, but don't. Because of reason above.

Webcomics discussion... It's 2005 all over again. The days when Wigu and Overcompensating were daily bookmarks and I still occasionally wore my "I am made of Poison" yellow T-shirt.

I was surprised to see just how much Topatoco has diversified. Metafilter went from being an interloper on a comics-only merch site to rubbing shoulders with Welcome to Night Vale and John Hodgman!

Big thanks to everyone who has hit up my Etsy via the Mefi Mall! I spent the profits from last year on a once in a lifetime visit to a Liverpool home game (beat Arsenal so bad we took one of their players!) and if this keeps up, I might be able to go back! I look forward to befuddling still yet more German tourists by saying, "Why am I here? Because either people like medieval UFO abductions more than we thought or it's an Illuminati conspiracy. Or maybe both?"

I don't normally listen to many podcasts (downside of a blessedly short commute) but "Commander Cisco" is so ripe for jokes that I kind of want to see what came of this.

I would not expect someone who says draygun to say potahto, but perhaps there must be a conservation of long A sounds.

I tried an automated transcript again, this time through Microsoft and Bing. Only the first 15 minutes, because the process was clunky and the output was like Markov chains with no pauses just one long sentence with lots of words and no break for breath
