Shooting at the walls of podcast, bang bang! I am an episode! The latest episode of the MetaFilter monthly podcast, that is, but also I have Patty Smyth stuck in my head I guess. Anyway! Me and jessamyn get to catchin' up on the month that was on MeFi, and miscellaneous kibitzing, as we are wont to do! This one runs a little under 80 minutes.

Ok, I was not expecting Nibbles. Now I'm obligated to listen.

Another podcast idea, Cortex attempting to explain the concept of the chupacabra to Jessamyn and her not having any of it!! :D

Scandal feat. Patty Smyth touring for their Warrior tour back in the 80s was literally the worst concert I have ever seen. The sound was horrible, the band seemed like they didn't want to be there, and the crowd had nothing worthwhile to hold their attention and so even if you wanted to watch the awful performance it was mostly impossible with all the conversation and milling about. Which is a shame because I quite liked that album.

I should probably listen to the podcast before I comment further on this post.

Goodbye to You by Scandal is the superior song, though.

Goodbye to You features in a key scene in Better Off Dead.

So, Cortex is pronouncing it as "nes" rather than "N-E-S". Is that the standard, or is this another Cortex-ism? I'd always heard it pronounced with each letter.

I have encountered both! And will at times when disambiguation requires it say "en ee ess". I absolutely do not pronounce SNES as "sness", though, that's just madness.

it's pronounced like sneeze

Enjoyed this poddiecast, partially as it touched on subjects close to my heart such as Animal Crossing, the US flag and Flickr. Nodded vigoriously at Jessamyn's analysis of Instagram and Flickr. I've tried the former several times, but the near impossibility of finding old content just breaks me in the end. Flickr, although it looks duller and older, retains simple but effective search functionality for finding pictures from years back.

That's nothing to SNES at.

In the UK they are/were commonly known as the "nezz" and "snezz". I've only ever heard Americans call them N-E-S and S-N-E-S.

My Burning Man camp was the Chupacabra Police! That said, cortex didn't know that and I kninda did ask him what one was. Looking forward to listening to this on my long drive today.

There is no cabal, which is why it is a complete coincidence that the day after this episode brought up the question, Ars Technica just posted an article on NES pronunciation.

I have now listened to this and I have feedback w/r/t the new podcast recording tech

1. Listening to it in the car gave the same effect as previous which is that I can hear myself and not cortex basically at all. I think this has something to do with the sound texture of cortex's voice and the noise in the car, but I remember it from before and it's still present. Anyone else have this issue?
2. I can hear a sort of audio "shimmer" with higher pitched sounds/voices that reminds me of audio compression artifacts which I don't hear when we record with Skype. And again this is in the car so it's not in a dark room with headphones on. I don't think the quality is as good.

THAT said, it sure was easy, so unless other people have real issues with it, I think it's sufficient.

Have noticed recently I have a slight hearing problem in my right ear, so there's a weird effect - I can hear both Cortex and Jessamyn clearly in my left, and Jessamyn clearly again but Cortex only faintly in my right. Maybe - probably - it's yet another age thing (fifty next month) thing to add to my list.

Unfortunately, even with a slight hearing problem, through the thin wall of this traditional English terrace I can easily hear my neighbours doing their intimate thing right now as I type this while their dog, in the same room, barks loudly at them.

Yeah, I noticed those audio artifacts too; enough to make me go "this is not crystal clear audio!" but probably not enough to really worry about.

Interestingly, Patty Smyth and Scandal played last night at the local concert venue right up the street from me. I'll have to look around for some reviews.

Listened to the first half on headphones and the other half in a rental car, and come to think of it I had to turn it up a bit to juice the cortex levels somewhat.

The Podcast's audio sounded crisper and a little more 'pro' than usual. So maybe the software stuff is a good thing?
