New merch: Seal of the Cabal August 3, 2018 11:35 AM Subscribe
We're rolling out a new shirt design, featuring art from robocop is bleeding, who has taken his rad hand-carved block printing aesthetic to the eldritch glyphs and sigils of MetaFilter history to produce the Seal of the Cabal. (There is, of course, no cabal.) (But there is an alternate, smaller version of the design for folks who prefer how that sits on a shirt.)
I'm super fond of this design; for some it will be close to incomprehensible, for others it will read as a catalogue of old jokes and strange corners of the site, but regardless of content it lands the hell out of that "I found this in a dark cubbyhole of a condemned book store" feel which is exactly what I was hoping for when I contacted robocop originally. I'm a big ol' fan of his work; he's posted about his Corey Press stuff on Projects before, and jessamyn and I chattered with him about it some on the podcast last summer, and I'm stoked to be giving this a go.
Here's the Seal of the Cabal design itself; placement and material color will vary depending on what kind of item you are ordering:
We're also trying out a print-on-demand service this time; I'd like to get a feel for how a more flexible "let's just go for it" approach can complement our traditional pre-stocked inventory merch processes. One advantage: easy flexibility in the kind of thing you order, since they support a variety of t-shirt cuts including larger sizes, support a bunch of colors on the more common types, and even do some more specialty items like baby outfits and dog shirts.
Specifically, we're trying out the Neatorama-based Neatoshop service. I've been happy with what I've found poking around and talking to the guy who runs it, and Neatoshop is local to MetaFilter HQ these days, which is a nice bonus.
It's all a bit experimental, of course; specific feedback on design options and placement is totally welcome, as is feedback on the Neatoshop process, item quality, etc. once stuff arrives.
I've done the two versions of the Seal here to try and accommodate different preferences about shirt design size and placement, based on some of the feedback we've seen in previous merch discussions, but I'm open to ideas on other iterations; another nice thing about the print-on-demand setup here is it's not overly difficult to add another variant of a design, so if there's an obvious consensus for an "okay but what about variant x?" I can make that happen.

This was a fun piece to carve. Thanks again to cortex for the opportunity - when a bunch of robed figures surround your bed at night chanting about the proper plural for 'lego' then you know it's serious business.

It's funny that I first read the camera as a sock (if you look at it as toe-and-heel part closest to the center, and the top of the sock rolled down, maybe you can visualize that). The clock I took for the 5-minute edit on comments, but I'm probably wrong there, too! Anyway, I love it so much. <3!!

Ordered the curvy large seal version and I'm anxiously awaiting delivery. Which, given that I'm living in the arse-end of the universe (Australia) will probably be here in three to four weeks. Woohoo!!

If you type the words "ex sapientia modus" into google translate it says "out of the way of wisdom" and when i pasted the phrase in it gave me "the philosophy of moderation" but I can't get it to give me that one again. So in honor of the occasion I say: Metafilter: Out of the way of wisdom

Further on the doesn't-ship-to-Mexico issue—I checked with the Neatoshop folks and it sounds like they just had too much trouble with packages outright disappearing and so nixed that. Recommended using a reshipping service like shipito.com as a fallback, so basically what carsonb was offering except as a commodity service instead of a helpful MeFite.

Mailing things to Mexico is really iffy, in my experience. I've personally had at least a dozen things as minor as holiday cards and letters never reach their destination, let alone actual packages. I think that using FedEx or UPS or even DHL might have a better track record, but I've never tried any of those for sending something to Mexico.

I've had packages disappear as well; or get here long after I complained. I'm shipping the shirt to a US address (I'm going to Portland/Eugene for 2 weeks) so all's well. DHL/Fedex is reliable, in my experience.

Like taz, I thought the camera was a sock (as in "sock puppet"). I figured everything else but 9622 out on my own.
In my defense, I did think to myself, "the only thing this is missing is a longboat." Cabal that doesn't exist, please take this into account as a mitigating factor in my favor when considering new initiates during the next membership expansion.

I wore my heavyweight charcoal (quite similar to MeTa gray) small seal the other day but neglected to get a pic. It is decently heavyweight and the XL fits my broad-shouldered 6'3", 250lb frame with a little room to spare. I am glad I chose the small seal, even though I was worried it would be too small. It's not, and I think the "full-size" might feel a bit like wearing a hockey sweater, if you ask me.

It's definitely a large logo. But if someone's going to squint at my chest in the Costco parking lot, as happened today, I'd rather it was easier for them to read than more difficult, in the hopes they will give up and go about their lives sooner.
