Login weirdness with Opera 6.04 August 28, 2002 6:56 PM   Subscribe

Login weirdness with Opera 6.04: After I enter username/passwrd and hit 'login' the page stalls: just a white screen. If I open up another window and load mefi I'm logged in correctly, but the original window stays blank and has to be closed. Problem doesn't happen in metatalk login.

I'm an Opera user myself and I've never had any problems like that on MeFi but I've had similar problems on other sites. Hopefully they'll fix those little bugs that befall Opera users with version 7...

I just switched to 6.04 from 5. I don't think this ever cropped up with 5, and I haven't seen it on any other site.

On the whole, 6.04 seems like a really good upgrade - for some reason, when 6.0 came out I gave it a try and decided to stick with 5. But whatever was bugging me before seems to have been taken care of - the new version's veddy veddy nice..

I use Opera v6.03 and I've had that problem as well, my lazy work around is to use IE... bah. My less lazy work around is to (me likes the tabbies, me uses them) open a new page login to that, let it stall, close it after a few seconds, and refresh the first page--tada, I'm all logged in.

If Opera 6 can't handle basic HTTP headers (the page simply issues a HTTP redirect), maybe it's time to move on to a different browser?

i have experienced similar problems when using lynx 2.8.3dev.6. this was discussed here, but i've never seen a resolution. perhaps the same bit of code is causing trouble for both browsers.

I haven't had the problem you describe using Opera 6.02, win2k. Check to make sure you have both automatic redirection and referrer logging enabled (both under Preferences, Privacy).

It looks like metafilter uses Refresh: 0; URL=http://www.metafilter.com/. There's also Location: http://... which I haven't had any problems with.

TimeFactor: Enabling referrer logging didn't solve the problem for me.
