Re watching people making things: I have been out of work for about a month and have discovered that watching Laura Kampf’s videos help curb my anxiety. To a lesser extent, Adam Savage’s videos help me relax as well, but I really like Laura’s because they aren’t step-by-step and she uses some really great music. I think it is because they are both so upbeat and supportive of others. It makes me smile.

I feel like Friday afternoon podcast posts tend to be super low-engagement (hi terrapin, hope you have a great weekend, will be at chicken pie supper in Bethel tonight) but hello to everyone listening on the weekend!

Thanks for the heads-up about supper. We’re going to Worthy Burger after the Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival. If you want to join us we’ll be there around 5:30.

Why no IRL love in the podcast? 😜

Re: Great British Bake Off. I thought they rebranded it when it moved to Channel 4 but it looks like it still has the same name. I haven’t watched since the move mostly because I was afraid it would lose its feel good nature without Mel & Sue. I read and article in The Guardian that seems to confirm that.

It's always a thrill when my music makes my favorite podcast! Thanks!

Will have to listen again when I don't have a head cold, but in the meantime I can answer the question about the Great British Bake Off. The original and current name is "The Great British Bake Off" but the production team couldn't use "Bake Off" in the US because "Bake-Off" is trademarked by Pillsbury. So that's why it's called "The Great British Baking Show" in the US. Here's a post from the PBS Public Editor explaining the name change.

Another difference is that the US edits are shorter and they trimmed down some of the banter between Mel/Sue and cut the historical vignettes, which I thought were charming.

(Like terrapin I haven't watched since Mary/Mel/Sue left either, for the same reason. I loved the good, kind nature of the show and definitely got emotionally invested in it, and have seen the earlier seasons multiple times.)

Rangefinder: great rendition of a fave of mine. And I’d didn’t know of the original so thanks for the knowledge nudge.

I've found Sandy and Noel to be a good pair and as good a replacement as you could hope for, basically; I miss Mel and Sue a lot, they were really wonderful hosts, but the show's still more or less the show and Pru is charming in her own right and Paul's still just the same asshole-but-affable-but-is-he-really-tho Paul.

I think I was inoculated a little against the heartbreak of the cast changeup because I'd already started watching some of the (many!) other national spinoffs. It's easier to imagine Bake Off with a different set of faces when you've watched it with several different sets of faces and idiosyncratic format changes already. The overall difference between BBC Bake Off and Channel 4 Bake Off is less than that between either and any given spinoff iteration, mostly, though I will endorse Australian as maybe the funniest and definitely (if still only slightly) filthiest of the bunch.

Lost my own point which is: the show has remained kind and good natured, which I love too and so am glad it's still there for that reason alone. The spinoffs generally share that quality, too, which is nice. (Though I think the head chef judge on Irish version didn't get the memo and so is too serious in his posturing. Like he thinks he's doing final exams at culinary school or something. But everyone else is lovely.)

I feel like we had the whole 'cortex explains spoopiness' thing on the podcast last year around this time but I'm too lazy to check right now.

this year was probably the g-g-g-ghost of last year's podcast

I thought so too but maybe I am in a spoop foggy fog.

cortex: Pru is charming in her own right and Paul's still just the same asshole-but-affable-but-is-he-really-tho Paul

I think Pru came in hard, and was definitely not a replacement for Mary Berry (first, because how could you even replace her? And second, she felt more like she was trying to replace the male judge as the super-critical judge), but she's more gentle this season. For that matter, Paul seems to be softening, too.

Also, I think Sandy and Noel are building a relationship, and while it won't be like Mel and Sue, it's getting to appear more comfortable and natural, IMO.

Not sure if I'm fully chuffed, but it's a good bake.

Is there a chance of a transcript soon for this episode?
posted by brainwane at 10:03 AM on October 7, 2019

I don't think there has been any movement on getting a podcast transcription system working, so I don't think so. I am sorry.

I am surprised to learn that spoopy is a real thing that exists in the world and not some very strange couple's inside joke that the hosts of the Sawbones podcast made up. (Or, perhaps, it's just a conspiracy cooked up by podcasters.)

I can't decide whether or not I like it. Perhaps it depends on whether you considers "spooky" to be the same as "scary." I'd refer to a cheesy haunted house ride at the fair as spooky. A real ghost chasing you through a graveyard would be scary. The difference between spoopy and spooky seems pretty subtle. But, it's certainly not the worst neologism that's survived.

Re: Great British Baking Show/Bakeoff name difference.

In the UK, it is called the "Great British Bakeoff". It goes by a different name in the US because the Pillsbury corporation has a lock on the word "Bakeoff", so when it started being co-produced by Netflix, they had to agree to call it "The Great British Baking Show" when it aired on this side of the Atlantic. So THAT is why there's the name difference.

Kind of like how the first Avengers movie for Marvel was called just "Avengers" here, but in the UK they called it "Avengers Assemble" so people wouldn't confuse it with the old Avengers TV show with Emma Peel (or that weird movie with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman).

It was called the Great British Baking Show on PBS too, but I don’t remember Mel and Sue doing intros with that title.
posted by Huffy Puffy at 2:23 PM on October 25, 2019

Yeah, the Bakeoff/Baking show thing is more tied to "what side of the Atlantic is the TV screening it on". The PBS "Baking Show" listings are probably something that PBS did up themselves.

Looks like I was wrong about podcast transcription efforts and there's been some movement for the latest podcast. Woo hooo!

Hey, so as a direct result of my job being on this podcast I got to meet DoctorFedora and his wife, who not only came through admirably with the tickets but with whom I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon exploring their 'hood. And of course, I went to the show (spot me in that photo just by looking for the BIGGEST SMILE). Thanks y'all!
