It's 2020 pretty much everywhere now, if I've done my timezone math right, so: here's to the new year, and to all of us in this weird old online community keeping on together and seeing what we can make of this next year.

2019 was a doozy and it wasn't the first one, and I want to thank you all for being part of getting on through it. We've got a lot of challenges still ahead of us, in the world and on the site, together and individually, and I figure we'll take those as they come as we always do, but for now I just want to carve out a little space to recognize the importance of this place to me and to a great many of you. I'm glad it's here, and I'm glad you're here. Here's to another trip around the sun for our online home. Happy New Year, y'all.

But it does seem so surreal that soon, when people refer to the twenties, they're going to be talking about our time, rather than the Roaring Twenties [does her best Charleston, takes a swig from the flask in her garter].

Indeed, it's a very happy new year for many Illinois residents. Our governor handed out 11,000 pardons for low-level weed offenses yesterday, with more coming down the pike. It's about time our laws started making more sense. This is a good start.

Happy New Year to all and to all a Good Grief!
I'm especially happy and semi-proud to have been able to make my first FPP in a year and a half, and make it one of the longest contributions I've ever made to this site. My deteriorating health and the untimely death of my last Windows laptop, forcing me to limit all my internet and Metafilter exposure to a cheap Android semi-smart-phone made me think I was never gonna do anything like this again. And the overwhelming wave of famous obituaries in 2019 really made me despair for everything good (there's one obit not yet posted that I will cover tomorrow if nobody else does). I am recovering emotionally if not physically, and really do not expect to survive until the next numerically suggestive month of June 2066 (6/66), but I was an innocent kidling for 1966 and 1969, so I doubt I'll miss too much.

Let us move forward into the re-roaring Twenties with 2020 vision and make a u-turn on all the crappy 21st Century trendlines.

Happy New Year. I have burnt the outgoing year in effigy each year 2016. This one went up cleanly and easily, I think probably because everyone in the house lit matches at once and set them to each corner of the paper.

I'm choosing to take that as an omen. Let's celebrate this year as a year of building solidarity.

In Sweden there's this nice tradition during the first week or so of January when you hear from and tell the people you meet god fortsättning (which basically means, good continuance!) instead of Happy New Year because it is no longer January 1. This is the week of the year in which I take every opportunity to use that phrase because I enjoy it so. Please allow me to wish the entire MetaFilter community a good continuance of 2020.

I'm growing to like the Twelvetide idea (the twelve days of Christmas), which I believe is connected to how long it took for the three wise men to show up in Bethlehem. So yeah, twelve days of good will and whatever which culminate on Jan-5 (a Sunday this year) by which point we're theoretically finally ready to take on the problems and promises of the coming year.
