A Thanksgiving Day Python Screenplay Party? November 20, 2020 6:40 AM   Subscribe

I’ve mumbled before about doing a funny online screenplay reading salon, and there seemed to have been some interest. What I have not tried to do before is organize it on a holiday!

So this is a little bit of an experiment, but it suddenly occurred to me that Thanksgiving might be a ducky time to venture forth. From all the media, from ask.metafilter and elsewhere I’m hearing a lot of stories about singletons/couples/families all, in one way or another, dismayed by their coronavirus-inflected Thanksgiving holiday plans. Given [waves arms], it seemed a random silly screenplay read — I’m talking about Monty Python and the Holy Grail, specifically, which even if you’re not a Python fan, and I’m not especially, is a seriously wonderful and wonderfully silly screenplay — might be a good way to have some well-deserved fun!

I’ve already put up an online invite IRL for Thursday, Nov. 26 at 6PM US/EST, with an RSVP email:

I’m reposting here to get more feedback and because I gather not everyone thinks to check IRL. Any interest? Is 6PM okay? Thoughts?

Spending some time that day with my sister, but she may want to join in too. Will discuss and maybe sign up.

I would love to, but I will still be at work for another 2 hours. (It's good! It's for a hospital! It's not being forced to work retail/foodservice. I actually volunteer for the shift every year.)

But, I did want to say, if you can get this book, it's a very interesting look at the first draft of the screenplay for the movie. IIRC, there's like 30 pages of script at the beginning they just... cut! And went a different direction. I found it on a bargain shelf decades ago and, of course, can't find it now to confirm.

Anyway, highly recommended.

I won't be able to attend but I encourage anyone with the time but wavering to join up! I did another one of Violet Blue's online events and I can attest that she and the group are brilliant, sparkling folks. Hope there is another screenplay reading in the future (a vote in advance for Important of Being Earnest? I have long-dreamed of playing Algernon in a gender-swapped version) because sounds SO FUN

I just wanted to say again what an amazing time I had at the reading today! I got to play three of my favorite characters: Robin's Minstrel, Prince Herbert, and Tim the Enchanter. Many thanks to Violet Blue for organizing and leading!
