Pancakes? Huh?

The Search Metafilter option is a great tool when you're confused about stuff. Plus it keeps MeTa clear. Use the Google search if the regular one times out. I'm sure typing in "Pancakes" and reading through will help you with any questions you may have.

First mentioned here.

Originally used to denote linkless threads but now something of a catch-all term of abuse for content-free threads.

It's come before on MeTa

So much for those search suggestions. Yes, I know that is the default. Just shows how useful THAT is.

And here I was, all ready to propose that pancakes and haikus had been overthrown in favor of that new phrase (which I can't link to, since I can't search MeFi comments right now, but I'm sure you've seen it):

"So let me get this straight ... the toy broom ... it vibrates?"

As usual, mischief, you're completely off base. The default "last month" search is useful for two reasons. The first is that MeFi, just like he internet, has a short collective memory. This is, of course, an assumption on my part, but it is an educated one. I would say that most of what people are looking for on this site is something that occurred within the last month, so making it the default is only logical. The second reason is that if "since day one" was the default, every search would be poking three years back into the archives for something that, again, is probably more recent. Why bother taxing the database like that? Matt may have a new server, but that doesn't mean common sense about site design and database use should be tossed.

Or I may be assuming to much. You may just be confused about the usage of a drop-down menu. May I suggest the Google search?

You're off-base too, eyeballkid. The reason that search didn't work was not because there haven't been mentions of pancakes in the past month -- there have been, obviously -but because there have been no threads mentioning pancakes. Had mischief switched to "threads and comments" or "comments only" he would have found plenty of mentions.

I have the exceptionally dubious distinction of having been the one to post the comment after aaron's seminal "Who here likes pancakes". And I'm certain that countless people have wondered what in thee hell I was talking about with my cryptic "Who likes wood" one-liner, insofar as the page it links to expired ages ago and that I consider "four" to be a uncountable quantity.

So I would like use this opportunity to set the record straight.

Who likes wood?

Did you know that in Rotterdam there's what's called De Pannenkoekenboot? The Pancake Boat is "the Netherlands' only floating pancake restaurant", featuring all-you-can-eat pancakes. You can have them "au naturel, apple or bacon pancakes, along with every imaginable topping, including cheese, ham, fruit, syrups, powdered sugar and much, much more".

While trying to find the appropriate word for plättar in english, I came up with both "small pancakes" and "hot cakes". Which one should I use if I wanted to order some in an american restaurant?

people here don't actually think that metafilter is the first place "i like pancakes" was used in response to a lame thread do they...? it was all the (over used) rage on msn bulletin boards and chat rooms, back in '95 when msn was still a firewalled online service like aol. i sincerely doubt it was coined there either.

In general, I don't like American pancakes, no matter what the size. But I love crepes!
