Extremely optional potato whimsy June 23, 2022 12:19 PM   Subscribe

Without any particular planning, some folks (myself included) have had a good time making and commenting on front page posts about potatoes in the last few days. There's no particular reason, no official theme week or anything like that; I saw several people commenting "what's going on?" or "is this a theme week?" so this is your reassurance that you didn't miss an announcement or something. It's just snowballed organically. If you're enjoying it, have fun! If you don't love the fad, please do feel free to post other stuff as usual. Probably the potato harvest season will end in a few days or weeks.

Shhh, don't worry.

I was wondering myself! And just the other night I decided I HAD to do something with the bag of potatoes I had, so I got out my mandoline and big boiling kettle, filled my kitchen with a bunch of starchy splashes and changed one of my usual dinner staples, Burrito Bowl (supermarket burritos with cumined-up brown rice, sour cream, salsa and cheese) to Potato Plate which is basically the same thing, subbing in potatoes for the rice and skipping the burrito. I must have gotten the idea through osmiosis.

Official Proposal: rotating vegetable/fruit theme weeks throughout the year. New one each week.
posted by medusa at 2:28 PM on June 23, 2022 [2 favorites]

As well as MetaFuel this week, potatoes are an important food crop worldwide. In the 00s an international consortium decided that the potato genome must be sequenced to facilitate the development of more abundant, disease-resistant, yummy tubers. Some of the players were really on the ball and started to generate data early [looking at you Netherlands]. But, after they invested some person-years in the project, there was a new tech breakthrough which enabled the laggards to catch up and overtake the early-risers. The two different methods were largely incompatible and the project was starting to founder in a storm of miscommunication, sunk-cost fallacy etc. One of the consortium members called plenary session in his home town and over a couple of days of face-time, and quite a bit of Guinness, the impasse was dissolved and the project went forward under The Carlow Accord. I love the idea that this bit of agrirealpolitik should have been achieved in the middle of Ireland where, like, potatoes are sometimes on the menu. The results of this genome project were published in 2011.

This series of wonderful posts led me to a new children's book, The Pet Potato, by Josh Lacey. I suspect he is a secret crouton-petter, thanks to this description: "Despite his parents' firm stance, Albert pleads [for a pet] unrelentingly until, one day, his father hands him a small wrapped package, which turns out to contain a potato. “You wanted a pet,” Dad tells Albert. “It's a pet potato.” Albert sets the potato aside, then notices that it looks sad. The next day, he gives the potato a ride on his train set, and soon the pair are inseparable."

The potato. Looks. Sad. But it also has "an arsenal of adorable potato-size hats"!

Today we had gorgeous weather, so for lunch we picked up fish and chips by the beach and hung out at the side of the road by the water to eat. A seagull immediately sensed the fries in its territory and stalked its orbular body around the car, occasionally squawking at me. At the very end of our meal, I decided to bequeath it one half of my final French fry. It caught it in its beak like a dog with a frisbee, and after I started gathering up our trash it flew away. I hope that this means my potato offering was accepted, and one day when I need it most the seagulls will bless me. Maybe one day I’ll lose my keys and a seagull will drop them in front of me from the sky. Or maybe they will poop on my enemies. Either way, potatoes have value to people, birds, and unknowable spirits alike.

A few years ago I had the summer off and out of boredom was looking for some side work to make a couple extra bucks. I found this one week job at a summer camp way out in the countryside at a totally not a cult, but they have crystals there and no internet and do lots of meditatey type things that definitely made the place feel cult adjacent. For example, while eating (in their all locally grown, organic food only cafeteria), there was a bell in the corner and every few minutes someone would ring the bell, which meant everyone had to freeze (stop talking, stop chewing, whatever) for about fifteen seconds until the bell was rung again and everything went back to normal. It was supposed to create mindfulness and give us time to reflect upon our food and conversation or whatever.

The place was definitely not something that I would normally be involved in, but I was at loose ends, the money was ok, and it was only for a week. So I went down there and had a really nice tech free week (did I mention no internet? also no tv or anything like that), and taught kids. So what does this have to do with potatoes? Well, while down there, one of the kids introduced everyone to a game where we would close our eyes and one student chosen at random would say the word 'potato'. Then the rest of the students had to guess who said it. The key to the game is that you want to disguise your voice so that others can't guess who said it.

Potato.

My mother's potato salad:

Boil a batch of new potatoes. Let them cool for a bit, then cut the smaller ones into quarters and the bigger ones into eighths. Put them in a bowl, give them a light sprinkle of salt, and drizzle with a nice vinegar. Give that a few minutes to soak in, then add enough heavy cream to coat them all. It was funnier when nobody was drawing attention to it. This whole thread is the experience of somebody explaining a joke.

I was planning to make a serious/obit post but stopped. Seemed a bit...disrespectful? jarring? to have an RIP lost in the middle of a potato post party...

Agreed, I think it's stopping people from posting stuff that most people here might want to actually engage with.

WHERE IS THE WEIRD AL "ADDICTED TO SPUDS" POST??

Remember that MyMefi is there for your Metafilterfilter convenience. If yonder potato eye offends you, pluck it out.

Since we've moved on to intentional shitposting, it's probably about time to declare this jacket potato done. Thanks, everyone! See you next year for posts about trout.

(Bonus content: I had a half written post about the Australian scallop/potato cake divide that was mostly an excuse to post the The Herd - Scallops music video. CW: skiphop, extreme closeups of people eating with their mouth open.)

All these potato posts and nary a potato salad recipe?

not a recipe so much as a tip. You can generally cut the mayo half-and-half with yogurt and only improve things. Both better for you and fresher tasting. mmmm. And forget the egg. Serve the egg on the side if you must. Some people don't like eggs in things. I don't like eggs in things.

And ummm, speaking of unhealthy eating, is this the right place to inquire as to a good recipe for bangers and mash (the gravy part -- I know how to mash a potato, I know how to fry a sausage)?

And yet still more potato posts. I am clearly no longer welcome here.

That's it. I'm hitting the button.

Sorry to be that guy but I hate this.

I don't hate this per se (kinda like the spontaneous group activity thing) but i sure would hate it if there was a new theme every week that took over the front page. Imgur does this and it drives me batty.

Been hooked on potaters this year big-time. Baked (with sour cream, pepper and salt) and oven-cooked wedges (using parchment paper for best results and crispness) are at the top of the heap. Love tubers so much.

I think MetaFilter might have a brain tuber

Naw, we're just getting back to our roots.

Wait, some people are leaving because of a few potato posts? What? Am I missing something?

At any rate you're in luck, there's nothing like the striking down of Roe v. Wade to kill a party.

I hope that this means my potato offering was accepted, and one day when I need it most the seagulls will bless me.

Back in the summer of 2020 when hardly anyone was going anywhere, our local parking lot gulls who normally hang out by Portillos were quite forlorn without the scraps they normally subsist on. My husband and I ventured out for a trip through the drive-through and I felt bad seeing them walking around the near-empty lot looking wistful. We ordered our food and my husband asked why I had ordered two orders of French fries. His face when I threw one whole order of large fries out the car window to the gulls... 😂

Glenn Grothman is a sock puppet created for a 2014 midterm elections post, named for this guy, and only fifteen comments since then. It's a gag.

I'm team "Too Many Potato Posts," but, obviously, some people were having fun with it, and it's churlish to cause a fuss over it.

I can wait to do more FPPs.

Potatoes are a virus from outer space, hear their voice, see their face. Pontypool! Roko's basilisk.

Beware viral potato overlords, otherwise madness ensues.

Recipe for rustic tater croquettes.

Make mashed taters with fave seasonings and grated parm.

Cut fresh mozzarella into little cubes.

Cut prosciutto into little rectangles.

Wrap mozz with meat and insert into little tater balls.

Roll balls in some whisked egg and roll in some panko crumbs.

Wrap in foil and cook in wood fired wheel barrow.

OR; Pan fry in olive oil to golden.

Enjoy!
