Time to cry FridayFilter? October 9, 2002 11:05 AM   Subscribe

The news posts have pretty much dissapeared (huzzah). But what's taken their place? I know "we've already discussed this" already, but there have been a few "Friday" posts in the past few non-Fridays. They're usually great fun, but I'm not getting any work done. Time to cry FridayFilter? But seriously folks, what makes a "Friday" post? Sillyness, flash, fun?

There's no such thing as a "Friday post". Wacky links are welcome any day of the week as far as I'm concerned.

Every single Friday post has, to my knowledge, occurred on a Friday.

Interesting links, on the other hand, should be free to roam temporally where they may.

Well enough: it likes to be left alone.

I'm not objecting to when they were posted. I would certainly find other ways to keep my work in limbo (none as entertaining, of course). I'm curious about the *etiquette/policy* regarding these type of posts. I'm mostly curious because I was holding a silly post until friday thinking that was preferred/appropriate.

It has been my observation that the whole "friday fun" thing is a side effect of people believing that metafilter is newsfilter.

Consider this: if metafilter is "supposed" to be a place for serious discussion about serious issues, then it makes sense that people think that the fun/wacky links should only be posted on friday..

But the fact is, that most of the friday fun links are unique, and/or interesting, and "most people haven't seen them before". This, in my mind, makes them perfect MeFi posts.

If I wanted to read the news, I go to CNN or one of the many other alternative news sources. If I want wierd shit to "waste" my time, I come here (or go to memepool).

On preview: the only reason it's considered appropriate is because people are under the mistaken impression that this is a news site and that non-news links are inappropriate.

I suggest posting it on Sunday, because that's my Fun day.

Just as long as they're not posted on a monday.

I'm not objecting to when they were posted.

And so the post folds into itself, swallowing from the tail, leaving nothing behind but static electricity and a pretty blue color....

They're usually great fun, but I'm not getting any work done.

Who's forcing you to have all this fun? Quit clicking on the links and you're guaranteed a less-fun, more-work day.

"Fun" or "wacky" posts were what attracted me to MetaFilter in the first place and as far as I'm concerned, are welcome any day of the week.

While I agree with most people that you're free to post the wacky stuff whenever you like, I do really like the buffer of wackyness at the end of the week, (metafilter: the buffer of wackyness) just to celebrate the weekend..

how about not analyzing the site for at least a day. a week? dare i say a fortnight?

chaz: no-one's forcing you to read etiquette/policy you know.. Granted, the navel gazing is pretty frequent here, but it helps form an image of what is and what isn't acceptable and/or wanted by the community.

Okay then. Here's an image for you. MetaFilter has been better for the last few days that it has been for a very long time. The vast majority of the posts are "hey, look at that, that's interesting," instead of, "didn't I just see that covered on [insert major news outlet here] about an hour ago? and look, it's here three times."

If you want "wacky" links on Friday (and many of the links these past few days do not qualify as "wacky") then just come on Friday. There, problem solved.

Sure, mefi's fine. But that doesn't mean it can't be better.

If you want your "wacky" links distributed over the week just read one of friday's links every day :)

So we'd be best off distributing the wacky links in such a way as the majority of mefi wants, which means all we have to do is start a metatalk discussion and see what people want. Ooh look, what's this? ...

Obviously I don't have to bother with it anymore. And as for what the community wants, have you been here lately?

...if metafilter is "supposed" to be a place for serious discussion about serious issues...

Which leads to a question I've been meaning to ask: What the heck is MeFi "supposed" to be? What is a post "supposed" to be? Or is there even a "supposed to be," other than in the most general sense? Why are we here? Why do we post?

Why do you post? What do you think your post "should be"?

This whack friday stuff started back in the day when most Metafilterairians were employed; getting rich was not enough reward, and to stiffle the unrest an 11 year old double PHD invented "Casual Fridays" whereby workers dressed up like buddhist monks and homeless ex politicians and played for pay. It is I believe in commemoration of those casual fridays that the now mostly unemployable MFs sit nude at the keyboard every friday playing and sharing flash games.

So, whose Friday should wacky links be posted on?

It's a common misperception. Unfortunately.
