How about linking to one of the dozen-odd currently active sniper threads from the sideblog and designating it "Sniper News Central"?
How about ignoring things that bother you?
How about retiring that particular snark? MetaTalk is meant for things that bother us; it keeps front page threads from cluttering up with complaints, for one thing. Take your own advice, and if you don't like a MeTa thread stay the hell out of it.
Also, I second the sideblog "Sniper Central" idea. Perhaps it could just link to the latest thread, with a request that ALL sniper posts go there?

won't that result in the opposite of the intended effect by legitimizing news posts? i would think promoting sniperisms to the sidebar would be the last thing matt would want to do.
of course i'm not one to bemoan the existence of 'news-fi'. really the only time i come around is when i want to hear what intelligent ppl have to say about some bit of news. but i think is standard is a good link, period. not all the sniper links are good, obviously, but you can't just lump stuff by subject.

Comparing the Sniper with I/P or Iraq threads isn't really a good idea. This sniper business affects people living in Washington. ( Tragic enough) To the rest of the world it's just sensational news. There's a difference.

It's not like this is unprecedented. Recently the sideblog has carried a suggestion to consolidate 9/11 links and a plea to stop posting vibrating broom stories, to go from the sublime to the ridiculous.

No, Miguel outlined something poetic for 9/11 in MeTa, posted a link that day, and Matt highlighted it. It wasn't the only vessel for 9/11 related posts.

I'm also tired of having to look at MLB.com or CNNSI.com for news about the World Series. Could we put that on the sidebar too? Or maybe Matt could just set up the side bar so that it feeds directly from news.google.com.

If you don't like 'em, skip 'em. It really is that simple! Instead, you blow off all this energy playing your childish elite clicque games and bring down the overall quality of the site by intentionally derailing threads.
If anyone pulled the same tricks as you guys anywhere else, Matt would have banned you long ago.

Speaking as a control freak, I resent being grouped in with the people who are currently blocking all attempts to discuss the sniper story. We're getting it from both sides -- if the news is sketchy, it shouldn't be discussed because "this isn't rumorfilter." If the news is definitive, it shouldn't be discussed because "this isn't newsfilter." Even a papal interdiction in the sidebar isn't enough to squash all this filterfiltering.

This idea would require some work by Matt, and thus isn't feasible for quite some time, but perhaps it could alleviate headaches?
What if there were a way to promote a thread to be recurring, so every day at midnight it would move to the next day's list? (or to some list of recurring threads) Eventually, when the story is resolved or has died down, or a significant event occurs that is worthy of a new thread, Matt could close the thread.
It could limit the number of double posts, or multiple posts on the same topic, yet still allow for those topics to be discussed.
