I want to break a rule here and propose a shoutout November 19, 2002 8:09 PM   Subscribe

I want to break a rule here and propose a shoutout - a cheerleader post, if you will indulge me. I note a immense upward jump in the quality of both MeFi and MeTa posts and comments, with a corresponding downward jump in noise, trolling and trash. I note comments by Matt have a more relaxed tone than in the past few weeks. I see discussions kept to a mostly civil if not downright respectful tone. I observe efforts running the gamut from herculean to humorous by members like frykitty, y6y6y6, waxy, riffola, adrianhon, et al, to help make this wondrous place ever more enjoyable and user friendly. I want to say thank you, to everyone. [*Cue Dorothy, who taps heels of ruby slippers 3 times, chants "There's no place like Metafilter, there's no place like Metafilter, there's no place like Metafilter...*]

Oh, pi___ aqieru%! ***9~[]!!

I just can't do it! I can't make the first snarky comment after something like that! Someone else is going to have to do it!!

Wholeheartedly agree. Follow the blue brick road.

I don't know, I'm not sure if deleting all those Michael Jackson baby crisis posts would have been very relaxing today.

Is that snarky enough?

Agreed, Lynsey. It seems like the prospect of 'imminent demise' comes and goes, cyclically. We're definitely in a good stretch at the moment, I think.

Maybe this place does scale (although there are many voices I miss who either lurk or no longer visit at all).

I guess I could make a snarky stupid joke about how, now that MeFi's doing well, I'm going to make lame holiday posts about Winona Ryder's sentencing and her new Xmas card (Betty is pretty funny sometimes, like when she goes on about Creflo Dollar, who is perfectly surreal when you catch him on late night TV), or about the fact that Martha's Xmas Special has been cancelled (while K-Mart backs slowly away from her).

Nah.

Really? I didn't really see this as a particularly great time in MetaFilter's history. The front page is loaded with news posts, and comments don't seem a whole lot different than usual. Perhaps I'm just not noticing.

... Or maybe... you've all... gone mad!

Even if it was the case, you probably jinxed it. Note the reappearance of a Michael Jackson thread and someone asking for parenting advice. Oh, for shame!

Thanks Lynsey, but I don't think I help out much, I usually add to the noise around here. :)

I think MeFi is getting better all the time. There will always be a few awful threads, but it's getting better. And basically what stavros said above.

For those who are students of the evolution of communities, both online and off - what stage is Metafilter at ? What's in store next year?

Hmm. Good question.

When I walk down a dirt road, I leave knuckle marks. Maybe that's a clue.
