FPP post chauvanistic sniggering, poor commentary followed November 21, 2002 8:33 AM   Subscribe

Is this really necessary? A front-page post consisting almost solely of chauvinistic sniggering at the name of an indigenous group? And it's not redeemed by the discussion.

Listen Godammit, if you want a redeeming discussion: Contribute! The tribe is interesting. The article, well-written. The related discussion possibilities, many. I, like the author, can have a sense of humor about the topic and also have a major interest in it as well.

It might have been an interesting post, in the anthropological sense, but the presentation was nothing less than tacky and the link about the poorest possible source on the topic--I didn't have to click on to know what was being linked and what I saw when I did was weak: a crappy blog entry. Of course, the last time I offered such an opinion, the outrage was ubiquitous.

I thought that the post was kind of cute -- I admit, I giggled -- and the subject matter was interesting, but it seems like MetaFilter is getting awfully puritanical lately.

Or is it just because some people have problems with the homoerotic connotations in this post? (cf. "HORSE COCK", op. cit.) Would we complain as much if boobies were involved?

The comments sabotaged the thread, plain and simple. (Yes, boys, the word "semen" appeared on the front page. Oh my! Blush! Faint! And if you object because you're at work, isn't a web page with a background colour of #006699 more of a giveaway that you're not using Office at the moment than the word "Semen" printed in 14-point on it?)

I'm puzzled by the responses on this FPP: not being snarky, truly: the word "semen" makes a post NSFW? Hm. I can understand porn or something, but "semen"? Does that mean if you go to the "Breast Cancer Site" you can get fired?? I'm honestly confused here.

Granted, I work in STDs/HIV so pretty much anything I look is is SFW, but I am surprised that a biological term like "semen" would terrify so many people.

It's really not the "chauvinistic sniggering", it's that it is a uninteresting link -- unless one has the silly fascination for bodily fluids normally found in 12 year olds

It's a FPP based on Bronze Age superstions about the ingestion of semen.

The guidelines: for a good FPP:

1. most people haven't seen it before
I hope so, Thank God

2 there is something interesting about the content on the page
Where?

3 and it might warrant discussion from others.
What kind of discussion, about barebacking gays in the military?

I read both posts...the second one had a little more detail and a dryer more scientific feel, while the former was written to be less dry and a more interesting read. Shorter too. I wanted to forward a link to my wife and I chose the one that was originally posted. So am I to understand from what you said Y2Karl that you got all offended by this and DIDN'T EVEN READ THE POST??

The tribe is interesting.

True, but as usual you present with a sniggering poke-in-the-eye adolescent approach which may have done for size tags as Spoon did for color tags, which in my book makes you not only irritating but a troublemaker as well.

The article, well-written. The related discussion possibilities, many. I, like the author, can have a sense of humor about the topic and also have a major interest in it as well.

Your ego is, as always, boundless enough to give selfcenteredness a worse name than it had before.
We just don't get how fucking cool you are--OK, end of story.

Eyegore--I read the post. There's better information out there than that piece of singgering crap.

And why is this not interesting? I thought it was. Please don't confuse "not interesting" with "not my cup of tea".

1. most people haven't seen it before

(matteo)

It's not that you don't think it's interesting, it's that you just don't want to hear about it?

No need to go viciously ad hominem, y2karl, even if dgaicun could be reacting better to this than he is.

Yes, and I provided it immediately. Hey y2Karl, (and all the busters and the haters) here's an idea. Now please stop sabotaging my threads.

There's better information out there than that piece of singgering crap.

Perhaps you could contribute to the thread by posting that information?

Nothing wrong with the fpp an sich. Perhaps if it was 'styled' in the usual way, some people would be less bothered about it. I would have added the second link in the fpp as well, for balance.

I'm getting a bit tired of the NSFW complainers.
Two options:
1. Don't visit this site during work.
2. Get a job where you can visit this site during work.

jesus christ people. Chill out on the "NSFW" bullshit (do I have to call for a moratorium on that now?).

It blows my mind how one or two people can instantly make an entire group hypersensitive to something, regardless of common sense.

I deleted the 90% of comments in that thread that didn't add anything to the discussion at all beside useless bitching. The rest of today's posts are all pretty top-notch, did everyone need a "release" on one thread to balance things out?

"it seems like MetaFilter is getting awfully puritanical lately."

Agreed. With thousands of active members from around the world, some people still want to keep things safe and tidy. Good luck. Personally I blame Bush and his secret mind ray. But then I'm probably insane. This topic isn't my cup of tea, but I could see how it might generate some interesting discussion and links.

"There's better information out there than that piece of singgering crap."

So .... just so I'm up to speed here .... the new Mefi beatdown is, "Ha!!! I found a better link for that topic than you did loser!!!"

Hmmmm...... I thought that was what the thread was for - Posting addition resources?

I don't think it was so much any one word but the formatting. Christ almighty, having naughty words on a page is not a big deal, but having them formatted so large was unecessary.

Yes, the formatting was bad, and I removed it. dgaicun (is that your username, or a new Cirque Du Solei tour? Zing!), you might want to go for less dramatic presentations in the future. I think people were annoyed by the look of it, and when the linked articles didn't have enough quality to outweigh the annoyance, people seemed to freak.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 10:09 AM on November 21, 2002

Agreed. The post, as first formatted, was an exercise in junior high attention seeking.

I have no qualms about the subject matter, in fact, I thought the second link was fascinating and informative.

Sorry bout' the 14 pt type, I didn't think it'd be an issue, I was just havin' fun. No more html shenanigans in the future.

Thank again MeFi fairy-Gottmadre!

Don't laugh too loud, dgaicun. That *sigh* in your second comment makes you come across all unsavoury and creepy-like. ;)

Maybe if I pray to a shooting star, and put various extracted teeth under my pillow, and leave for lunch again, another magical guardian angel will take that out too.

OK, not counting on it, but don't persecute me for my faith. What more do we have in this world?
