War threads are exhausting April 3, 2003 11:50 PM   Subscribe

Tired of war-related threads? Yes. Tired of non-war threads that feel the need to make reference to the fact that they are not war-related? Yes again.

I almost stuck this in the bugs category. It bugs me. Certainly, I was unable to find as many examples of this as I had the impression of there being. Perhaps I'm seeking validation with my first snarky comment. Anyway: - I'm aware this is not a big deal. Is this the first friday-fun MeTa post? I'm off to make a USS Enterprise out of a floppy disk.

Thread derailed in one comment. By the poster.

Gotta be a record, or something.

There are other, older threads in metatalk about this sort of metacommentary. It's lame in whatever form it takes, and in the past I've taken to deleting parts of posts featuring people talking about their post, why they posted it, or warning others to go easy on their first post.

Don't talk about your post within your post, just freaking post something good and be done with it.

Oh, so it turns out it *is* actually quite serious. The self-derailment stems from my pathological need to preempt criticism. Many apologies.

Actually, nthdegx, I was going to make the same metatalk post, sort of. It bugs the hell out of me too, the Invasion is the new "it vibrates". Feh.

...the need to make reference to the fact that they are not war-related...

*sniff* I resemble that remark.
Damned if you post war, damned if you don't (and say so).
Somebody tagline that, eh?

Or maybe, rather than taglining my comment above, somebody say, "We'll bitch loudly about any and every microscopic detail because uncomfortable things have crawled up our asses and we're just pissy."

Then somebody else tagline that.

No offense, nthdegx : )

Let's just have a big fight instead. Come on, I've been spoiling for one for minutes.

Nah. Hugs and oral sex. I'm a lover, not a fighter.

"We'll bitch loudly about any and every microscopic detail because uncomfortable things have crawled up our asses and we're just pissy."

I've really been thinking lately that this is the whole point. We'd like to deny it. We know it's not *suppose* to be the reason we enjoy the site. But seriously, don't we all enjoy the site because it allows us to scowl and roll our eyes and tsk-tsk? Isn't this really just an elaborately disguised and over engineered kvetch.com?

MetaFilter: an elaborately disguised and over engineered . . .

Nah.

Tired of splitting hairs? No. Tired of splitting teeny tiny hairs? Nuh-uh. Tired of splitting hairs plucked from a dust mite's leg under an electron microscope with nanobot laser scalpels? No. No. No.
Tired of being easily irritated? No.... Hey, fuck you buddy!

Tried of complaining?

Never.

Donald Rumsfeld is the new Robert McNamara.

(Sorry, I just wanted to piss off the people endlessly whining about Iraq threads.)

Somehow I knew, when I went to bed at 5:30AM, that this thread, despite it's obvious logical death after Matt's comment, would continue to receive more input.

I know it's not big deal, so maybe I shouldn't even be commenting on the issue at all--or maybe my commenting is furthering what I'm commenting against, in an ironic entanglement of good intent and poor execution!--or maybe this is an example of Friday-Fun-MT commenting. Maybe I shouldn't have posted this at all?! What am I doing? WHO AM I? WHY AM I HERE?!

/existential crisis.

What am I doing? WHO AM I? WHY AM I HERE?!

Once in a while,
I'm standing here, doing something.
And I think,
"What in the world am I doing here?"
It's a big surprise.

What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Rumsfeld is the new David Byrne.
