rhyax: Carlos is an Argentine friend of Miguel's who hangs out with him a lot and, Miguel claims, just happens to like posting the same sorts of links Miguel does in the same style. It would be churlish to suggest that he was using his friend to evade the one-post-per-day rule, which so evidently cramps his style. People have, needless to say, suggested this. But it's churlish. Does this help?

Miguel, this is always going to pop up as an issue because you have an extremely distinctive writing style, and your posts and Carlos' posts often appear almost identical. There will always be people who remain unconvinced, and there will always be people who haven't read previous explanatory threads who will ask the question yet again.

My heartfelt advice is to let Carlos create less than perfect posts. Edit for spelling or the most basic grammar problems only. As it stands now, Carlos doesn't seem to have a voice, or any kind of mefi "personality" of his own, and it's difficult to interact with someone who, essentially, doesn't seem to exist. I, for one, would be delighted to hear Carlos in his own voice, and he must trust us to forgive mistakes made in what is not his first language. The snarks that will be snarked will probably be less painful and more roundly defended against than this ongoing suspicion and confusion.

ok, apologies for carping. but "sub-racist" and "intelligent outsider"? the first needs supporting evidence, surely, unless it's just mud slinging (i guess this is the liberal equivalent of calling anyone who argues with an israeil and anti-semite, right?). the second is plain wrong - miguel is the consumate insider. at least, that's the way it seems to me (and for me this is critical: if i thought i was mocking an outsider i would feel terrible; laughing at the big cheese in the middle of the mefi clique is much less offensive).

hmmm. why not, then, make snide remarks about, say, quonsar? i guess because i enjoy his comments. for me, they're much more "intelligent" than rehashed posts about cultural attitudes or exclusive brands.

It's not about brains -- I'm sure Miguel, Carlos, and all the other Miguel-related users are very, very intelligent. some users tho, I think have the right to consider as "very substandard" many of Carlos fpp's, and a good percentage of Miguel's, too (hard to post high-quality stuff once or twice a day every day for months and months and months. my idea? for every very good Miguel fpp we have to endure 5 which are very juvenile and possibly pointless. Carlos does not comment, he only uses MeFi to post his fpp's and sometimes comments in his own threads.

but of course it's up to matt, and he seems to like Miguel/Carlos/etc output, he's not deleting any of their fpp's so they must be ok, what do we know

Miguel and Carlos can perfectly well defend themselves, plus I've never bought the "Miguel-bashers-are-evil" thing, he seems to have a very vocal constituency of fans here, so he's far from being a victim of the ugly, communistic MeFi mob

then andrew cooke piles on - not the originator, just a follower. jonson's reference is, to me, quite subtle: I seem to remember some discussion as to whether eggars & pollack were one & the same. hmm. just come out & say it: again.

I say it is close to racism, because the issue has been explained to the satisfaction of the site owner. There is no hard evidence to pick on these two who have similar styles, non-anglo names, an eagerness to please and 'fit-in' with the dominant culture, and because this underhand whispering campaign is typical of the cynic, the bigot and the insider who's worried of his place, his status and his property.

I think my posting record shows I'm no cheerleader for Miguel (he even emailed me after a comment of mine led to one of his posts being deleted...) I don't often comment in his threads, mainly 'cos I don't go for luxury goods, conventional culture or conservative politics. Lord - he says up above "I like Bush" - eww!

He fought hard and long to assert his right to post just like the guidelines say: I doubt he's ever thought of himself as an insider, if there is such a thing here.

I just can't stand prejudice, and I think that's what I see here.

dash_slot-: Thanks for the kind words, and I appreciate that you're writing out of good and generous motives. But accusations of racism are way, way over the top, and (imho) you should apologize to all and sundry. It doesn't matter a damn what Miguel's name is; the salient facts are:

1) He posts way too much for many people's comfort, including mine; the fact that his posts (in the blue) are often interesting and always well styled is a mitigating factor but does not not completely excuse him.

2) Because his posts are often interesting and always well styled, and possibly because he is a published author (if not the Great Name of Luso-Literature many seem to assume), he has a large and vocal fan club here who shriek and gibber whenever he is treated with less than full adoration.

3) For that very reason, some of us who basically are not opposed to Miguel (he knows this to be true in my case) take great pleasure in poking the Miguel Balloon with sharp objects every once in a while, just to watch the shrieking and gibbering. (Which very rarely comes from him; he is admirably tolerant and good-natured. Cheers, Miguel!)

4) It is quite clear that Carlos is a separate person, and I carefully did not imply otherwise. It is unfortunate that Miguel not only encourages him to post with almost the same obsessive frequency as himself but edits his posts into a perfect replica of Miguel-speak; Migs should take taz's excellent advice above.

5) His self-retracting comment above was brilliant and is the kind of thing that would keep me from being an actual Miguel-hater if I were ever tempted.

6) Those of you who read it carelessly and are reacting with either sorrow or joy are idiots. Sorry, but there it is.

I would just like to thank dashie for sticking up for the outsider (whoever he is, he exists and is discriminated against, on MetaFilter too: currently his personification is the Muslim, the conservative, the Christian, the Mormon, the teenager) but, in my case, let me reassure my good friend:

the people here who dislike me do so democratically; they hate my guts in all equality; when they can't stand me it's with absolute fairness; with good reason and equanimity. Their disgust and contempt are amply covered by the Constitution and would raise not a wrinkle or an eyebrow in the European Tribunal of Rights.

If I were American, they would not dislike me less. If I were Canadian, perhaps. Or from Salt Lake City.

I have absolutely no complaint on ethnic grounds. After all, I look more American than most Americans, write better English than most Englishmen and my baby blue eyes are so captivating that they have been justly celebrated in verse and in real life.

My only complaint, come to think of it, is that a lot of people don't seem to like me. It's always been so. My tragedy is that I really like the overwhelming majority of people. That's why I'm so annoying, I guess. I try too hard to be liked. And fail. And fail again. And fail, to rephrase Samuel Beckett, worse every time.

I, for one, am dissapointed that no one has suggested banning me from Metatalk, given that all my posts and comments here are always disruptive and held in sheer contempt of the entire MeTa group therapy process. Also, banana pudding is delicious. Mmm... banana pudding. I'm going to lather it on my body now and roam the streets declaring my tart yet smooth consistancy, baiting fat women into licking my total awesomeness.

I wouldn't go that far, but Miguel is a treasure. We may not all like him (I, admittedly, do), but he is a part of what makes Metafilter unique. It is not the case that he somehow "deserves" to be a visible "face," but that's just how shit shook out. Ripping on him constantly is like protesting John Lennon's funeral because you're into hip-hop.

this will doubtless get lost in the noise, but regardless of what person or subject i think about, i tend to not like a person that tries to hard or does too much.

i guess that's why i'm not keen on miguel, even though i don't know the bloke but for his posts. but since i'm not a major player here, no one is going to notice. or even care about my opinion.

i often wonder, am i alone in this? probably.
