Sorry about the downtime July 1, 2003 6:48 PM   Subscribe

Sorry about the downtime, I was moving from one place to another, far away. Things should be back to normal now.

But what is normal?

*breaths a sigh of relief that our dearly beloved MeFi is back*

Thanks Matt.

Quick question, has the server already moved from NYC with delfuego? Or will it be moving soon?

I could have sworn I saw it floating in the East River.

You moved to Portugal?

This last outage, which lasted all of what, 24 hours, has caused me to genuinely question whether mainlining Mefi all day is as harmless as I keep telling myself it is. In fact, it appears, I cannot quit whenever I want to. Instead, I sit, pathetically typing in the url, pawing at the screen, battling the impulse to post to a nonexistant Metatalk a complaint about the lack of... metatalk. Perhaps a searching and fearless moral inventory is called for, as well as admitting that I am powerless over my urge to read/post?

"You moved to Portugal?"

Cuts down on the latency.

Yup, he's here. But shhh... what with the trolley cars, the bridge, the hills and the weather, he thinks he's still in San Francisco.

jokeefe, here's the solution to your problem: Bookmark MeFi, so like the rest of us you can keep, relentlessly, humiliatingly, disappointingly, checking the site's status - with just one click!

Man, I didn't realize how much I was jonesing until I checked the URL just now and got a hit of that sweet, sweet 006699...

Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh...(takes the MeFi plunge, a la the 80s Nestea commercial).

Let's never fight again, MeFi.

Seriously, you've got to give us a warning next time. Metafilter is a lot like Heroin, and I need at least a hit every few hours or so.

Or, if you are going to take the server down, take it down for a week or so. I don't think I can quit cold turkey if the site's still here, but with it gone, I'd have a shot.

As always, he remains unrepentant.

In times of desperation, don't forget the filter clones. They are to a MeFi addict what Nyquil is to an alcoholic.

My name is ... well, it's complicated but that's not the point: and I'm a MeFi addict.

Perhaps a searching and fearless moral inventory is called for, as well as admitting that I am powerless over my urge to read/post?

I think the next question here, jokeefe, is what some good "higher powers" are here for agnostic/athiestic MeFites.

(I'm sure the 12step/addiction-anon culture has some good answers, but I'm not privy...)

(Besides mathowie?)

Ha! Me, I'm happily back in the State of Denial. I have no problem. Maybe you have a problem, but not me, no way, I have it all under control, I know what I'm doing, and it's all taken care of. Yep. Everything's just fine and dandy. *puts hands in pockets, walks away whistling*

I'm just gonna check out the front page now for a while *twitch*

homunculus: The clones are -- at the very least -- like sterno squeezings to an alcoholic.

like sterno squeezings to an alcoholic.

Especially since they didn't acknowledge MeFi's outage (not even MFDistilled...).
Complicating matters for me was the intermittant problems we've been having with our network hub -- I was never sure if it was MeFi or the damn network.

I don't know what all you jonesing junkies are talking about... I found a fairly effective way to keep from that incessant clicking. (NSFW!)

Madamj, that link clearly demonstrates the importance of MeFi; without it, you spend way too much time with quonsar...

Ah, yes. "ErLEnE", the Erotic Latex Enclosure Experience.

The Kabalarian name analysis system, by the way, suggests that "The name of Erlene creates a restless, creative nature that takes you into many ventures, but does not allow you to see things through to a satisfactory completion. Yours is a versatile, musical, artistic, but independent nature and you must have the freedom to express your creative ideas and abilities to be happy. An urge for independence causes dissatisfaction and frustration in close relationships and you find the 'ties that bind' restricting". The reading further comments that "It is difficult for you to merge with others".

With that kind of thinking, I'll never be able to look at Tipper Gore the same way again...

(Tipper and Tupper in the same comment? I think I'm losing the ability to "sequitur"... Where's Cosmo Topper when you need him?)

Oh, god. That made an erratic thought shoot through my brain: What happens if you fart in the Human Storage Container. Icky.
