Self-link. As far as I'm aware, this is still a no-no.

Whether or not he did it on purpose, Matt'll probably delete the thread when he takes time out of Real Life to check the site. No need for a MeTa on it.

Um. MeTa is where one is supposed to do it.

Perhaps deleting a MeTa thread like this one along with the offending link?

(though honestly just deleting the self-linked part f the FPP in question would leave a decent post)

Everyone's ignoring the self-link and commenting on the Johnson article anyway. I'd go with Space Coyote and just delete the self-link bit, not the post.

I say we round up a posse & gun the bastard down in his boots.

;-)

[I don't mean shoot his boots either...]

"Opinion that matters," yet! Priceless, thanks.

Where's the self-link? Or did it get removed?

I see no link to his site in the post, unless the accusation is that he re-posted something he had already done on his own site.

i'll be having a combination road rally/hide and seek/mefi meetup this wednesday evening located here. i will be at that location sometime just prior to twilight. first one to find me gets a kiss, and the board game home version of our popular website blort.

spoilers: the north/south gravel road to the right of the image is named osbourne, or osborn, depending on which newaygo county road commission halfwit made the sign. osborn is a long road. don't bother looking south of the muskeon river. if you hit big star lake you went too far. off road trails don't strictly require 4WD but it is recommended.

sorry folks for the self link.
I thought giving the link there might have been ok (at the position i gave it), since i didnt wish to make the post really long, so just linked to the continued part on my weblog.

point taken and will be stictly taken care in future.
sorry once again.

No harm done, but [more inside] is a better option, jayantk.

me3dia: Yeah, Matt seems to have removed it, which is what I was hoping would happen -- as others have said, it's an interesting story on its own. (If you're curious, it's the site linked from the "-link" of my post.)

quonsar: Damn you! While trying to find the Muskeon River so I could look north of it, I fell right into the Muskegon River! It's cold in here! And wet!

I see no link to his site in the post

I don't see it either. Maybe it did get removed.

I find it odd that we create an entire MetaTalk thread to reprimand a self-link, but the post itself again links to the individual's site...

Think about it...

yeah :)

I really think we need a visual way to see the pruning that has been done to our lovely trees. When Matt, benevolent gardener that he is, decides to delete a comment or edit a post (the general principle of which I agree completely), he should let us know that something has been done.

Just a tiny red asterisk would do it. That way, readers who wander in later on can see that changes were made and so the weird references to "self-post" or "ewww.. quonsar! Gross!" won't be so mysterious. It'd be even better if the red asterisk linked to the original post/comment in mefi.deleted.

I don't know what to say about deleted posts. I think that I'd rather not waste lines on the homepage with little red asterisks for each double post. So maybe it's inconsistent -- it'd still be good in the posts themselves.

Um...are there many deleted comments? What for?
posted by graventy at 12:49 PM on July 22, 2003

I think zpousman's got a good idea there, folks. The whole Dave Winer vs Mark Pilgrim spat, while childish and petty, has convinced me that a relatively open editing process for weblogs--even huge community-type ones like MeFi--is a good thing.

(Although a red asterisk would look terrible against the Infamous Blue.)
posted by arto at 1:55 PM on July 22, 2003

zpousman has a really good point (unless the original post/comment is still visible in lofi)

What about line-thrus or something like that to indicate Matt's removal/editing of stuff? that way we could share in the joke/tubgirl-esque grossness/self-link etc

"...are there many deleted comments?"

These aren't the comments you're looking for.
posted by mr_crash_davis at 2:06 PM on July 22, 2003

Yep, zpousman has a excellent solution, although maybe we could make the asterisk a lighter than 006699 blue, that way it'd be visible, but would blend somewhat smoothly.

zspousman has an excellent solution, although maybe we could make the "ewww.. quonsar! Gross!" symbol a little, burning tank?

"...are there many deleted comments?"

The only time it's happened to me they were really stupid and involved inline images. It felt good to be kept in line.
