Did anyone else lose Metafilter priveleges at work today?

The brokereage firm for which I work uses Smartfilter. I'm curious whether my employer lowered the bar for being blocked, or whether the company added Metafilter to a list in which it had not already been included.

Is anyone else's job satisfaction going to drop while their productivity rises?

I heard of a hack at defcon where you could use Google's translation service to translate English into English. Bingo, instant proxy. Like this. Notice the language pair - &langpair=en%7Cen. So unless your filter is blocking Google, you should be good to go.

It's a 100% free socks 5 proxy server. You set it up, figure out your companies network (check what your IP at work is, if it changes you'll have to list a set of IPs) and add that to the allow list, and everything else to your deny list. Don't add the entire world or you'll be spam abused! ;-)

If you need any help with that, I could probably give you some examples.

A while back at work we had some heavy month-end reports running, the system was running slowly, IT took a look at the culprits, and I was at the top of the list. An IT fellow came over to me and said, "What the hell are you surfing? Are you downloading music?" Luckily I knew him fairly well, so I showed him MetaFilter and told him I'd switch to LoFi. The point: MeFi can get you noticed by IT.

I lost MetaFilter privileges at work six months before I lost the whole job; the corporate drones were disappointed that my productivity hadn't improved. My "COBRA" post-termination medical coverage at first went toward Wellbutrin for depression and Combivent inhalers for shortness of breath until somebody gave me an EKG and noticed my heart was working at 22% of normal. I already mentioned my experience with cardiac catheterization. Been trying to teach myself mad web skillz when I haven't been strong enough to go out on job safari, but sometimes MetaFilter is the most brain exercise I have the strength for, like the last 10 days... without the "blogstop" anagrams and Tom Swifties, I'm sure I'd be totally suicidal. One reason I dread returning to the hospital is no MetaFilter privileges there (computer interference with heart monitors), and sometimes I just wish my cardiologist wasted some of his time here - he might be more human (then I think of some of my fellow MeFites and slap myself).

Maybe I should ask for recommendations of doctors in the L.A. area... BTW, anybody see my car keys?

Well, I *am* techno-über-hip, and "proxy that shit" does not sound like what I would say.

I would say you should use an SSH tunnel through your home b0xen to avoid prying firewall eyes.

Proxying will only keep you out of IT's reach if your IT department is incompetent. Fortunately, most IT departments are incompetent, overworked or both, but be warned.
