Could we fix this? [More inside]

I use google’s “I’m feeling Lucky” feature to navigate more quickly; that is, I usually type “g mefi” as an address instead of “www.metafilter.com.” Lately though, a google search for “mefi” doesn’t return the metafilter front page. Perhaps a friendly googlebombing is in order?

Why do some people always have to make the simplest of things complicated?

Wow, this seems like a real pressing problem. I'll get Skippy and the rest of the team on the case.

Dammit, dashie, I asked you not to bring that up. You know damn well it woz all dem cognac, champagne and soixante-bloody-neuf threads wot done it.

If you have time to waste reading MeFi in the first place, you have the three nanoseconds it takes to type "www.me", press the down button and then press enter.

For fuck's sake... what Stan Chin said.

Go to your hosts file, enter the following:

209.10.108.201 m

Now you have easy one-button access to Metafilter!

What I can't figure out is using google to get here.

(typing) google.com [ENTER] mefi [ENTER]

takes an extra keystroke, compared to

(typing) metafilter.com [ENTER]

I point this out not to pile on, but out of confusion.

Getting to MeTa is even easier, though. When you log on and hit The Street (that Champs Elysées of the MeTaverse,) follow the Staggering Iberian into the gr*y building.

Here is what I do: I write down the names of websites I visit in notepad, in order from most visited to least visited. Then, everytime I load up my browser, I open the windows notepad. If I'm going to "Metafilter" I scan my notepad list, find "Metafilter," highlight it with my mouse, press ctrl-c, then click on my address bar and hit ctrl-v to paste it. And I never have to type anything!

Except these pointless posts, which are actually small chunks of the MetaFilter Murder Mystery Choose Your Own Adventure, Bitch, novel that's currently in the works.

You people just need to learn to type faster.

Copying and pasting out of notepad? Bookmarks are your friend.

I've actually hired a small Guatemalan child to remember the pages that I most often visit. Over a series of months, I've trained him to touch-type, and now he can punch in "metatalk.metafilter.com" quite quickly.

So now, every morning when I sit down at my machine with my latte, I just email Nino, wait ninety minutes for him to catch a bus in from the South Shore, buzz him in, teach him english, and then sit back and let his deft fingers be my internet guides.

You teach him English every morning? Shit, that's dedication.

Great thread.

Definitely the last time I post to MeTa as a way of putting off writing an english essay.

oh, and *cough* MeFi *cough*

En raison du Ministère de l'économie, des finances et de l'industrie, connard.

Enough mockery. I'd like to mire this discussion in technical minutiae.

Kicking: If you've got a browser shortcut set to "g" that goes to Google, why can't you set one to "m" that goes to MetaFilter?
posted by rcade at 3:28 AM on November 6, 2003

What is this "going to MetaFilter" you speak of? I thought diehards like us never left.
posted by MiguelCardoso at 3:59 AM on November 6, 2003

rcade, I think that's a shortcut built into Mozilla, though I could be wrong. If that's the case kickingsand, for Christ's sake, bookmark MetaFilter in Moz/Firebird/etc., go to the bookmark's properties and set the keyword to "mefi" or "m" or "whatever" and then you've saved typing g each time.

You heathens. You aren't truly devoted to Metafilter till it's your home page.

Apoch beat me to the punch (and i'm surprised it took so long to be mentioned)....its one click away when its your default [home] page.

I'm a big fan of keyboard shortcuts, so this won't help but...I've got a bunch of my most-used bookmarks as buttons at the top of the browser. WHat's that you say? You're using IE, and can't do that? Shit. Sorry, man.
posted by notsnot at 7:19 AM on November 6, 2003

the crazy browser mod to IE lets you set it so that it will reopen the tabs you had open when you last closed the browser. All the benefits of the new breed of browsers without the "I can't see it" aspects.

notsnot, while i recently dumped IE for Firebird, IE has done that links as buttons thing for years.
