For those of us who don't have the money to register at CES, how about MeFiSoCalWenCom2004, featuring the first promised opportunity to call Wendell an asshat in person!!! When: January. Where: Somewhere in L.A. Let's narrow it down...

Uh....

You see, I'm just following up on my promise in my Way Too Much Information Comment to the Marriage Thread on Thanksgiving: I am going to organize a Los Angeles Meet-Up/Coming-Out Party sometime in January (remembering that I am broker than broke and through everything I've been through have never taken up drinking...) and I expect to see attendees from other continents.

:::crickets chirping:::

Hello? Anybody out there? there? there?

Maybe I should've put this in AskMe. skMe. skMe.

BTW, when madamjujujive and MayorCurley put together the Boston-to-L.A. car pool for MeFiSoCalWenCom2004, jpoulos is paying for ALL the gas...

Ah, let's see if it works this time! (I believe last February's attempted MeFiLA meet-up was a bit of a bust.) If no other Angelenos want to suggest a place, I'll throw Tom Bergin's (on Fairfax, just south of Wilshire) out there for consideration -- great whiskey sours and "Irish spring rolls" to boot.

"Irish spring rolls"?!? You mean they found a use for cabbage other than throwing at corned beef? Sounds dangerously close to good... I'm open to an Irish Pub; too much Irish on my Mother Macree's side...

I promise to make more of an effort this time. More than, you know, none.

Irish Spring rolls?

I haven't been through very much at all but I still picked up drinking.

I suggest Pasadena, not just because it's close to me, but because.....

ummm... errr...

They have an Apple store?

Lucky Baldwins is a good bar?

The Bada Bing pizza joint?

I'm close to LA, and will be coming, that's about all I can say. Get Away cafe in Riverside is good. Apple and pear cider on tap.

I'll come.
posted by y6y6y6 at 4:52 PM on December 15, 2003

I'll come as long as it's not, like, 7pm on a workday. Traffic ya know -- I'd never make it across town. Gotta fight the 405.

I'm down.

Alright then, our first issue to reach consensus on is When?
Week of Jan. 5-11 or 12-18 or 19-25?
Weekday, Saturday, Sunday, MLK Day?
Evening? Weekend Matinee? Midnight Run?
What's good for you?
I eagerly await the beginning of the battle between Weekend Haters and Neo-Weekenders.

As for Where?, I'm OK with a Pasadena location too, since it will give me an opportunity to lead a party of drunken MeFites to egg and TP the office that fired me last year...

Wendell, they are exactly that: dangerously close to good, without really being good. And yet, you can't stop eating them! Basically, it's cabbage and corned beef (but usually no strongly-scented deodorant soap) deep fried in egg roll wrappers and served with hot mustard. Me ancestors from the Oul' Sod on me fadder's side agree: they're fusion-licious!

I can do Pasadena as well, tho' prefer to stay vaguely semi-central-ish (not that there's really any centrality to L.A.) if it's a weeknight. How 'bout sometime that second weekend of the month (9/10/11, methinks)?

I say weekend night.

May I also humbly suggest the further virtue of Pasadena since it has a Gold Line stop, possibly allowing people not to have to drive...
posted by Argyle at 7:18 PM on December 15, 2003

Yeah, the Gold Line ends a block from my old office, but the eg-and-TP run would be better in cars...

Or get off the Red Line at Hollywood/Highland any time after the 12th and harass Ryan Seacrest...
living without cable means heavy dependence on The Simpsons and over-exposure to FOX promos...

Riverside is the ghetto.

I'd go, if I didn't hate you all.

But I may still go anyway.

Fairfax area of LA makes me a happy camper. I'll be there...as long as it doesn't interfere with my honeymoon!
(Which is 12/24/03-1/1/04, in case anyone was interested.)

If y6 is going then I'm probably tagging along too!
Yes, he will bring a camera, beware...

If we're taking votes, I prefer the Westside

westsiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiyde.

I'll be driving down from North O' the Valley anyway, so anywhere is cool wit me.

It's the ghetto? Somehow, I'm not really surprised. Oh well. It's cheap, it's all I've got, and it's better than Nebraska.
posted by stoneegg21 at 3:41 PM on December 17, 2003

Another Pasadena vote. I live there, and can offer couch/floor space for anyone who may need to sleep off the effects of the revelry.

What's the story now? Is there competition between SD and LA? Is it the same day?

Talk me down, y6!
posted by Kafkaesque at 12:53 PM on December 18, 2003

" Is there competition between SD and LA?"

No. Just trying to get the largest number of people at both events. I certainly don't think LA folk should attend the SD meetup and not the LA meetup. If Matt will be in San Diego there might be some motivation to attend both.

"Is it the same day?"

No. Different months. Weeks apart. Very different.

"Talk me down, y6!"

People attending the SD event will be able to view an authentic, laminated, hand written note from famous MeFi user MiguelCardoso. Also, if there is enough interest, I will be willing to display my skill at blowing snot bubbles.

Snot bubbles!?!?!?

I am soooo there.
posted by eyeballkid at 3:41 PM on December 18, 2003

Wherever I attend I will be bearing Wendellabilia, including the 1975 "Keep America Beautiful, Keep Wendell On Hold" t-shirt, as well as MeFi swag bags for everybody (if I and my swag suppliers get an accurate count of the number attending). Not expecting that to outdraw a laminated Miguel.

Of course, if I see y6 at either event, I'll expect him see him doing some world class farting. :::rimshot:::
