Welcome to MetaTalk March 4, 2000 12:12 AM   Subscribe

I like you both in different ways...

how meta can you get...? I think this post a topic thingie that I am typing in right now could be more specialized to metatalk, like it's not always gonna link someplace... differentiation of the two sections -- besides just by color -- is probably a good idea.

any way to get threaded comments going using this interface? some of the metachat may get kinda lengthy.

hmm..now that this section is up, I might as well ramble on about a few things that are gettin my goat. First off, when I enter metachat, for some reason I'm not logged in anymore. is this just my comp?

Also, I'm finding that in metafilter, when I click on a link that's posted in a comments section, it comes up in the same window, instead of opening in a different window, as I've chosen in my prefs. I haven't noticed any other complaints about this. Again, is it just me?

Also, is it possible to keep the new post and comment counter up after I've sent out a comment or post? Is there any way to keep the new post tally up for, say, a certain amount of time after a person initially logs on, or am i dreaming?

As for what jessamyn is proposing - link free posts in metachat - I'm all for it. For now. (Lets see how it goes. So far, there seems to be few to no people with questionable motives posting in metafilter)

ok..one more comment...are you going to keep metafilter and metachat competely seperate? When I go back to the main metafilter page, there's no information about new posts in metachat, which would be nice. Of course, there is the issue of cluttering up the front page....

I really should pay better attention when I post. (count this as my first official doh!) I meant metatalk, not metachat. Really I did.

jessamyn - will work on threading. there were some performance issues in the past, but I'll look into it. This post is a perfect example of why I wish I had threading, I wish this answer were directly below yours.

Ms Snit - this part of the site is a copy of the main index page, so if you're logged in one part, you should be logged in both parts. Since it's also so new, I haven't fully tested it yet and will try different browsers and accounts to see if I can solve that problem.

As for the new window thing, I'm not doing the full search and replace within comment pages, but can add that pretty easily, expect to see it in the changelog this weekend.

I rewrote the new post/comment counter to rely on session variables. It should "hold" the number of comments for at least 10 minutes, but again, I just wrote the code yesterday and will do some testing this weekend.

I could remove the link areas, because links aren't necessarily important in posts here.

As for keeping MetaTalk and the main page separate, it's a performance issue. I thought it would be great to say "2 new links and 5 new comments, and 1 new post and 3 new comments in MetaTalk", but it's an extra db query that would add a couple seconds to the main page's loading time. I suppose I'll work it in later, maybe as an option. For now, you do have to physically click over to the MetaTalk area to check for new stuff, and so far the counter seems to be working good, but it hasn't been perfect. When I clicked over to this area this morning, there was "no links and no comments" which wasn't correct.

please change the background color

I know Matt probly already knows this, but the options at the top of the page are two times too large for that graphic bar they're sposed to lay on. As for backgrounds, I don't know what's cuter than that powder blue you use on the `normal' meta pages; but the gray doesn't work too well against the yellow.

(Sorry for the visual nit-picks. Visual is where I am today.)
