I'm a big fan of Safari. Any chance of Matt, or any other programmers here, creating a MeFi sidebar for this browser?

there is no html sidebar that I know of. If anyone can prove me wrong, I'd be elated to know how to do it, as I myself use safari a great deal and could use sidebars for all sorts of sites.

Speaking of Safari, though, (and to salvage this thread slightly) does anyone know the difference between Safari 1.0.1 and Safari 1.1? I've read that 1.1 exists, on the link down below and on the Apple website, but I run Jaguar and can only update to 1.0.1.

By the way, I just read this.

Safari 1.1 is included in Panther. For the life of me I can't think of any new features but I had only used 1.0.1 for a month before going to Panther. If anything, it seems to crash more often than before.

I don't think Apple is planning to release it for Jaguar. Perhaps the 1.2 version might be available for Jaguar as part of Apple's realization that not everyone has upgraded to Panther yet.

[and maybe 1.2 will have the sidebar!]

I think the primary difference in 1.1 is the stuff in preferences that used to be in System Preferences: Default Browser, Home Page, etc.
I love Firebird on Windows and have used Chimera and OmniWeb on Mac, but Safari is all I ever use anymore. It just works so well.

Sure would be, if Dave Hyatt and team could up the dhtml/js support in Safari (which I hear they are working on)

FWIW, I've been following the rumor sites w/r/t Safari 1.2 and so far, the big change everybody seems to agree on is the "select page objects with the keyboard" (suspect the tab key will now select not only form fields but links, form buttons, etc.). I'm not saying definitively that support for Mozilla-style sidebars isn't in there, if it is it's escaped the notice of a bunch of obsessed people who have nothing better to do than track the minutae of every change to Safari... (Yes, I'm semi-obssesed, but only to the extent that I want Safari to stop showing these goddamned animated ads!)(But I digress...)

(This "sidebar" thing of which you speak - is this like the view in MacMSIE that listed just the links in a separate pane and that opened selected links in the main pane? Like dobbs, I thought the MeFi sidebar was the "stuff along the left"...)

that's just a blog along the side, which should work fine in all CSS aware browsers. We're talking about side panels within the browser that essentially let you introduce a semi-permanent frame on the left that loads an arbitrary page, and any links clicked open in the main browser window (which also shows the URL in the address bar).

I had a few screenshots of it in action here.
