I'm playing with Google's new entry into mailing lists. Let's give it a whirl, shall we?

they're already talking about us in there : >

I'm in.

Um, those are mostly Usenet groups, amberglow. But Googlusenet seems to be one big happy family now. Funny how it looks like a cross between Yahoo! groups and MeFi (c.f. the prev/next links).

How many MetaMeFis are there now? I've lost count.

Until Google stops printing the addresses you give it in plain text, I'm not using either google groups or groups2.

Jesus, google, get with the plan. Spammers are stealing our addresses from you! Take our real ones if you must, but *MUNG* them for display. Sheesh.

So what's the deal with "4 Reply" ?

Yes, thats an important caveat and should have been made clearer:
---
Clicking on the 'view source' link beside a post allows you to view the poster's email address
---
(fyi, i dont mind but others here might)

Not to mention why do I need to create yet another Google login when I already have Blogger, Ads and Groups?
posted by billsaysthis at 6:50 PM on May 12, 2004

vacapinta, on emails - I changed my login details and email shortly after joining. However the email notices are flooding in to my first email - not the changed, and verified one.

Beta indeed.

Don't need to create a new Google login if you've already got one for a Gmail account. I used that. (AdSense and Blogger accounts still separate: privacy advocates might argue that that's not a bad thing.)

OK. Now what?

It seems to vary, the number - eg

What are they up to? This is different to [the current] Google Groups how?
All 2 messages - view as tree...

6Reply

Actually, they all say "4 Reply" when you are not logged in.

I just registered, and now they all seem to be "4Reply" and the last entry in a given thread "6Reply" (no space), as you quoted. Debugging, I guess?

i, for one, welcome our new google overlords.

sheesh, lose focus much?

So what's the deal with "4 Reply" ?

in IE6, it shows up as an arrow and "reply", as it should in all browsers. this crap has some serious issues with moz and firefox, as did orkut. i just installed the latest nightly of firefox, and it won't even load now. this makes it a real piece of shit, (like orkut) as far as i'm concerned.

image capture in IE6:

i can no longer view the site at all in firefox, or i'd include a screenshot of the "4Reply" and "6Reply" phenomena rafter and dash-slot are talking about.

The "4reply", "6reply" is actually meant to appear as a tick or arrow...if you have the webdings font installed. Which I don't.

The site is very fast but posts appear very slowly - what's up with that?
posted by Jimbob at 10:13 PM on May 12, 2004

i have webdings installed. that doesn't help firefox at all.

I've been seeing stuff move, disappear, and change I'm browsing. I think that they're making live changes.

Two posts I submitted (one a new thread) never appeared. Oh well. This should not be in public beta yet.

I saw a lot of double posts there.

Weirdly, this thread shows successive postdates of 10.36pm, 11.13pm, 11.13pm and 11.12pm

GGBeta has also managed to confuse my GG email with my gMail address - I'd forgotten that I got one, and gave my dash_slot- hotmail address when i signed up.
Some weird stuff going on there.

Eh.

d-slot, I swear I only hit post once. I don't apologize that much. Hm.

So is this supposed to take a load off usenet (and be an alternative to Y!Groups), then? Not sure where in the market this is supposed to sit.

Jeez, and it seems like some people really dislike this site in there.
It's like the anti-metafilter.

I just posted a new thread with an apology - I signed up for individual email postings, not thinking about the consequences.

Some people are sure to have gotten challenges from my spam service by now - please ignore them. I've changed my settings so that it will no longer be a problem.
