If you'd like to read MetaFilter and other RSS sources on Windows, one good reader program is AmphetaDesk.

Do any of these RSS channels ever get updated? I've gone through a number of them and found that most of the latest news is really out of date; MeFi's last news entry is sometime in June. I'd really like to use this capability but if the XML file isn't regularly updated, what's the point?

yes, many people have rss feeds that update. i don't that my.userland.com is particularly good at keeping up. (if you look at the page linked above, it says something at the bottom of the page about how it doesn't like the format of the feed provided by mefi.)

There are plenty of live-action RSS channels. I try to feature several each day on my newsfeeds weblog.
