MeFi's secret language has been growing by leaps and bounds lately. It's always more fun when you're in on the joke, so here's the spot to post glossary definitions.

I think Uncle Joe started that, didn't he? All I know is that it's on Tuesday. posted by frykitty at 9:55 AM on July 9, 2001
And ponies? And Bens? And "The Next..."? And "Take it to MetaTalk"?
There's more, too. posted by anildash at 9:55 AM on July 9, 2001
Ponies? As in "there's gotta be a pony in here somewhere?" Or something else? Haven't heard that one. posted by frykitty at 9:56 AM on July 9, 2001

I think we need a term for when two people post the same thought at the same time. "Whoops. So-and-So posted hers when I was typing mine." posted by jpoulos at 10:08 AM on July 9, 2001
Ponies are a reference to asking Matt to add features to MeFi. "And while you're at it, Matt, I want a pony." posted by snarkout at 10:09 AM on July 9, 2001 [1 favorite]
Oh that's cute as hell. I like that. posted by frykitty at 10:11 AM on July 9, 2001
Actually, Ice Cream Day was first posted by CUJ on the infamous Kottke thread before he replicated his meme to the Dawkins thread. I know, because I was the first one to jump on the bandwagon (bandwagon jumper). That CUJ is a sly one. posted by timothompson at 10:37 AM on July 9, 2001

Joe apparently feels strongly about this. I, for one, agree with him completely. posted by frykitty at 10:42 AM on July 9, 2001
I don't believe that cultural touchstones like Ice Cream Day belong with puny "glossary" items. It should be referenced in the Almanac or something. posted by CrazyUncleJoe at 11:06 AM on July 9, 2001

1 cup of sifted flour
1/2 teaspoonful of bicarbonate of soda
1/4 teaspoonful of salt
1/2 teaspoonful of baking powder
1 cup of thick, sour milk
1 or 2 tablespoonfuls of melted butter
Sift together the flour, salt and baking powder, stir the soda into the sour milk and use to mix the dry ingredients to a batter; mix in the butter and bake as usual. This recipe will make about eight cakes. A cup of sweet milk and a level teaspoonful of baking powder may be substituted for the sour milk and soda. posted by Pancake at 1:37 PM on July 9, 2001

You can't have a MeFi in-joke glossary without mentioning the verb "to Kaycee" --- intransitive --- to fake out, with unthinkable success.
And, lastly, while I know who was responsible for the sorry-your-cat-died business, I still don't know *why*, and it hurts. posted by Sapphireblue at 4:24 PM on July 10, 2001

Nah, the real cabal people don't say "There Is No Cabal", the only people who say "There Is No Cabal" are the people who want you to think that there is indeed a cabal, and that they are part of it.
The real cabal folk know that there's no point in baiting the suckers along with misleading clues, which is in itself misleading. posted by cCranium at 10:40 AM on July 13, 2001
