Death of Reagan observed on Metafilter June 7, 2004 4:11 AM   Subscribe

The Media will be inundated (if it isn't already) with retrospectives on Reagan. I don't need Metafilter front page posts help me find them. Thank you.

We in turn will be inundated.

Can we try to keep it all in one thread, for those of us (yank and non-yank alike) who tend to avoid said newsfilter-y hagiographics/iconoclastics (geys a bit polar, dunnit?).

No ban. Just self restraint.

A simple "Discuss Reagan Here" link on the sidebar should do the trick. It worked, sort of, when the DC sniper story was all over the news.

Reagan FPP's should be comprised of information that is obscure.

I really have nothing against PoliticsFilter or NewsFilter but OpEdFilter & LazyFilter ain't good.

skallas was lazy & David Dark childish. The more some members (on all sides of the political compass) involve themselves in little pissing matches, the less their actual ideas & opinions will matter. They all get lost in the shower of pee.

No, it's Metafilter: Getting Lost in a Shower of Pee.

I'm with those who say we need only one Reagan thread, if that.

skallas could have linked the Juan Cole thing in the first "Reagan Is Dead" thread -- even if 400+ comments threads take forever to load, but maybe it's my computer/browser/connection's fault.

David Dark's tantrum, though, was immensely funny.
NeenerNeenerFilter indeed. and it's not even the first time.
I just hope he really is a 12-year-old and not an adult who acts like one

Not anymore, apparently.

Not anymore.

David Dark has posted an FPP essentially for the purpose of making Metafilter his personal pissing match.

Or he's posted his opinion. Or one he finds interesting. The fact that it's not the majority one, dosen't make it a crime against MeFi. Regardless of what one thought about Reagan, his death is a major story and there'll be plenty of dissection, pro and con, about the man's impact. Why exactly should we not participate?

I just read the blue, and I don't recall a Reagan FPP.

Have I become so accustomed to skipping those links in which I have no interest that I no longer remember them? Could others benefit from doing so as well. Yes, they certainly could. ;-P

You gotta admit: ReaganFilter beats 'no workable links for unregistered users'-Filter anyday. (Yes, I'm pointing at you, Keyser! (2x) ;-P )

MetaFilter isn't a place for posting your opinion, it's a place for posting the best of the web. I think some MeFi posters would be wise to add a smattering of Wikipedia's Neutral Point of View policy to their posts.

google cache link, Wikipedia has been imitating Reagan in both his current state and his recent state the past 24 hours

MetaFilter isn't a place for posting your opinion,

Uh, dude, that ship sailed a loooong time ago, whether we like it or not.

So did the "do unto others as you would have others do unto you" thing, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to fight my damnedest for it anyway. Lost causes are fun, or something like that.

what XQUZYPHYR said.

DD whined about skallas' fpp, went looking for some pro-Reagan (I mean, Margaret Thatcher? hello?) crap, and exactly 30 minutes later posted his ultra-lame fpp just to spite his perceived enemies

neener-neener

He didn't go looking for the "best of the web;" he went looking for a ruler and a camera and then zipped open his pants.

I thought you were boycotting the term "best of the web"?

DD was obviously trying to make a point. Was it right? Meh, probably not. But so what? MeFi is a personal pissing match for a bunch of posters here...there are plenty of folks here who abuse the front page; I don't think making David Dark the poster boy for a campaign to clean up grudge matches is likely to amount in anything but additional urine.

Oh, Sweet Creamery Elvis in Graceland. Today I am the dog that caught the firetruck... of MetaLove!

Bless you, dejah. I've been admiring your work since the late seventies. Sadly, though, jon's right. I have a false dome. the real one is just underneath. It's got a tattoo of a bullfighter across the back. Quite fetching, actually. But still.

(And Miz Linguist, you had your chance at the meetup to ply me with drink. Actually, maybe you did. Parts of that day are fuzzy. And who has my pants...
Sarge!)

I'd like to add my weight to the anti-NeenerNeener FPPs (I say delete them as double posts).

More importantly I'd like to join in with the chicobangs worship.

what XCUZ and matteo said, and it's not the first time.
About this time is where Matt will probably insert a "Bravo, David Dark" maybe?

and chico's ok, but he doesn't look as good in a skirt as sgt. ; >

I'm enjoying all the space in which to challenge the steaming heaps of hagioshitography the mass media is shovelling out to commemorate Reagan's timely demise :

"Reagan ended the Cold War, instituted Federal fiscal responsibility, restored American pride, and got tough on crime. When he died, a bright comet streaked through the sky towards the town of his birth, and a small herd of Palominos in Montana raced off a cliff in an act of apparent patriotic mourning."

[ Not to mention the death squads. ]

It's a lot to refute this tidal wave of hooey, so I'm happy for the plethora of DeadReagan posts - It's not much, but it's somethin'

They'll be gone soon enough.

Well, jon, that's great if you're in Montana, but then you gotta deal with all those pollution-causing trees.

I'll stay here in NYC, where the air is clean, ketchup is a vegetable, and baldies have no place on the fishing licenses of the populace.

Maybe three fpp's was too many, but thank God I could come here and hear some sensible counterpoint to the non-stop media Reagan dei-ification.

I know the intent of MetaFilter isn't political discussions, but that's the main reason I come here.

Somehow I've spent my whole life surrounded by too many people too far to the right, and coming to MeFi, and getting to hear from a majority of lefties is what keeps me sane and soothes my chronic feelings of crying-in-the-wilderness.

Yeah, sometimes the flame-fests get just a little out-of-hand, but on the whole, I find the discussions here much more entertaining and sensible than anywhere else.

And I really (heart) amberglow !!

My cali drivers license has HAIR: BAL on it. Now unless they have a time-machine set to the late 80s, and BAL stands for Brown And Lanky, it's not just Montana.
