The Bold, Italics and Link options in Meef don't seem to work, old bean.

Now that I notice, they fail in Meet too.

Oh, I'm having trouble getting perl to play right with apache and activestate. If anyone's an expert in apache on windows and has run perl and stuff like MT before, can you email me? I can't blog anything on my personal site until I fix it, as foo.cgi files are being served up as text right now and not being parsed by the server.

When I search for a MetaTalk thread, and click on the results, the thread does not load. It looks like the URL it's trying to load (for example) is this:

Brief Description:

Something strange has happened to the RSS feeds: the old URL now feeds me Ask Metafilter instead of the main page, and the XML button on the front page now seems to be an XML file for the sidebar?

Matt, the only way I've been able to get Movable Type to work on a Windows server, was to change the file extentions from cgi to pl. Then again, that's using IIS.

No, you can change the server mappings to run .cgi files with Perl, assuming you have administrative access. On IIS or Apache. Although on Unix, you don't need to; the system knows to look inside the script for the shebang line and run the script with the specified engine.

see the problem with mefi is all this sappy shit hung on it - like the speil chucker and the link/bold/italic crap. the latter is just extraneous fenestration that only serves to dumb down the posting membership, instead of encouraging people to learn how to make proper <a>, <b>, <i> tags, something people should be taught in 4th grade (they could replace dodgeball or something). the speil chucker would be rendered moot if only he'd code something USEFUL, like the ability to go back in and edit a post or comment you have made. in this respect, mefi is much like the bush administration. lottsa shiny stuff to keep your mind off the atrocities. :-)

People, metafilter is probably not going to be any faster because of apache. The whole idea behind this switch is to make it more stable, so it crashes less often, so it can actually be up and running for a whole day.

wobh: Why not? Apache was a lot faster when it sat on :8080 (ie less people used it), so that suggests it's not CPU bound or disk bound (as it shared those resources with the IIS-run requests), and it's definately not network bound.

The bottleneck looks to be the ColdFusionMX engine jrun, which is using java, and tends to gobble up processor power. After I get all the bugs worked out of the server software move, I'll move on to getting CFMX to speed up if possible.

So does not capitalizing and not applying emphasis where you mean to emphasize. It's up to you to pick the style you want to use. Look at it this way: the buttons at least give the non-HTML friendly a fighting chance, saving untold thousands of all-italics front pages.

If I'm logged out, then logging in gives me: "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /, 0; URL=http://www.metafilter.com/ on this server." But if I enter the front page URL, I can get to a logged-in page. [OS X 10.3.3, Safari 1.2.1]
